In 2012, if I had to pick one subscription that has been life-changing - it would be the Honest Company. We use all of their household and bath & body products every day, and I definitely think my house is healthier this year because of it. I'm also just become more aware of ingredients in all the products I use thanks to the Honest Company.
For 2013, I think my next life-changing subscription is going to be Hello Fresh! My boyfriend and I are still in shock by how amazing this subscription is. I took tons of pictures since this was our first box - you'll have to excuse my poor food photography though. I definitely need to work on that!
Hello Fresh kindly sent me this box to review - and in doing so turned us into life-long subscribers!
If you aren't familiar with Hello Fresh, they send you everything you need to make 3 healthy gourmet meals each week. That includes food that needs to be refrigerated (meat, cheese, etc). so the box has a cooler lining inside with ice packs. I was a little skeptical of this at first - but everything was properly chilled when I opened the box.
The Box: Hello Fresh
The Cost: $69 a week for the Classic box - 3 meals for 2 people, $11.50 a meal. (They also offer a Vegetarian box for $59 a week - 3 meals for 2 people).
The Products: All the fresh ingredients and recipes needed to make 3 healthy and delicious meals.
When I opened the box, I saw that each meal had it's ingredients separated into marked bags. I love that they've taken all the guesswork out of how much of any ingredient you need - everything is pre-measured and ready to go. Even the spices!
One reason I'm calling Hello Fresh life changing, is how they package their ingredients. I have to avoid lactose and gluten in my diet, but my boyfriend doesn't. I love that all food products are in separate bags. I can make his version of the meal with cheese and pita bread, and keep mine separate!
I can't stress how fresh and healthy all the produce was - they definitely have their sourcing taken care of!
One more photo of the ingredients:
Yes, those are swordfish filets on the right! Now on to the recipes:
Thyme Roasted Chicken
They've included everything you need for this recipe - the only thing you need to provide is the olive oil. We made this two nights ago and it was so amazing that I already went to the grocery store to re-buy all the ingredients!
Their recipe cards are extremely helpful and allow me and my boyfriend to actually divide up the work and cook together. I'm definitely not a chef, so I need all the help I can get. I love that each step of the recipe has a photo!
This is the salad that went with the chicken. This was probably the freshest tasting salad I've ever had in my life. I love that Hello Fresh only uses whole ingredients. There was no pre-mixed salad dressing packet. Instead there were directions to mix lemon juice, garlic, olive oil and salt and pepper for the dressing.
And this meal was gluten and dairy free in addition to being absolutely delicious!
Beef and Broccolini Flatbread
This was the second meal we made. My boyfriend and I kept wondering, "There's no way this can be as amazing as the Thyme Roasted Chicken...can it?" Turns out it was just as delicious!
For this recipe I made the flatbreads with cheese for my boyfriend, but made a bowl with just the beef, broccolini, onion and the sundried tomato, walnut and olive oil dressing for myself. These flatbreads proved to be a little difficult to eat with all the toppings, so my boyfriend ended up switching to the bowl approach too. Here's a look at the finished product:
Again, I can't stress enough how wholesome and fresh everything was in this meal.
Next up: Sesame Crusted Swordfish
My boyfriend and I both aren't big seafood eaters, but now we can't wait to try this recipe since the first two were so amazing. (I wanted to post this review ASAP since the $20 off coupon expires on the 31st, but I'll update with finished meal photos soon).
FYI - you can select which meals you want each week or skip if you aren't interested in the recipes.
Verdict: On weeknights, I find it challenging to have the time and energy to make healthy and fresh meals. Typically we end up going for takeout, frozen meals, or one of my few go-to recipes I can make in 20 minutes or less. Hello Fresh totally changes everything. I'm definitely not an adventurous cook - I think I have about 5 go-to recipes in my arsenal, so having these delicious and easy recipes delivered to my door makes cooking so much easier. Also, when I tear out a recipe from a magazine, I'm usually wondering if it's going to actually be as good as the pictures make it look. These Hello Fresh meals are even better than I thought they would be. I now feel like I can just trust whatever Hello Fresh sends me will be delicious.
Lastly, this box is so life-changing for me because of how difficult it can be to eat meals when you have food intolerances or allergies. Unless a restaurant has major transparency on their ingredients in food (most don't), it's nearly impossible to eat out without wondering if there's gluten, dairy etc in the dressing, chicken marinade etc. This has definitely limited my food options to the things that I feel comfortable making, or the few restaurants I trust. With Hello Fresh, I feel like I'm getting meals that are better than anything I've had in a restaurant, and I know exactly what went into each recipe.
So in conclusion, because of Hello Fresh, I'm going to be eating healthier meals with more variety every week - and I couldn't be happier! Have you tried Hello Fresh yet? (Sorry if this review turned into a bit of a love letter to Hello Fresh - but if you have food intolerances / allergies, I'm guessing you understand!)
