Fancy Box Subscription Review - May 2013

This is a review of the classic / original Fancy Box subscription service. They also have a lot of celebrity Fancy boxes - and I currently subscribe to all of them! (Check out all my Fancy Box reviews).

Fancy Box Subscription Review - May 2013

Each box comes with cards detailing the items in the box. And here's a picture of the actual items:

The Box: Fancy Box

The Cost: $39 plus shipping

The Products: Some of the most fancied products from TheFancy.com  (you can specify what categories you are interested in).

Fancy Box Subscription Review - May 2013

Milo Micro-Suction Smartphone Stand - Value $18

Menu Decanting Pourer - Value $13

I was disappointed to see this Milo Smartphone Stand in my Fancy box this month - I got the exact same item in my May Verbal Fancy Box.  I definitely don't need two of these so I'll be gifting the spare to a friend. I wish Fancy didn't allow for you to get duplicate items if you sign up for multiple subscriptions!

F@#K The Time Watch by TKO - Value $95

My bad luck continues with this box - the watch arrived broken. I'll email Fancy about this...

MIZU Fancy Stainless Steel Water Bottle - Value $18

I like the finish on this water bottle - plus it's dishwasher safe! Most bottles like this tend to be handwash only, so I'm very happy with this item.

Verdict: This wasn't my best Fancy box - with a duplicate item and a broken item (that I'm sure Fancy will resolve), this box wasn't as much fun to open as it usually is for me. I still like the bottle and I'm sure I'll use the wine decanter, so it's not a total loss! I paid $30 plus shipping for this box (I subscribed to the first box and locked in the lower rate), and received over $140 worth of product (assuming they send me a new watch!) What did you get in your May Fancy box? Have you ever had the duplicate item issue?

Received my Fancy Box today and I got exactly the same which to me is weird its almost like they just buy bulk bulk bulk amount of 4 items and send it to everyone, i live in australia so it goes to show the extent of the same item all over the world…. Regardless im happy with my Fancy Box the only item that wont get used is the shitty Phone Stand, i doubt i will find a home for it either so i will now turn it into a dust collector.

Just received my box today! I received the mint skeleton TKO watch, which I love. I will definitely be selling/giving away the pink TKO watch from Coco’s box now as I don’t need two and the mint one fits my style more. I also love the wine decanting pourer. I will be putting it to use.

I got the same items except I got the mint skeleton watch. You are right though and I wish they would keep track of who is getting what as to not send duplicate items.

@Ryan…I still wear watches but that’s because I worked at jobs where you were required to do so. In mental health you have to check on residents every 4 or 15min depending on their risk status. In nursing you have to check patients regularly after surgery for the same purpose. Not wearing a watch could have meant losing a life. I can think of many jobs where wearing a watch is necessary. I had even been told not to use phones on the job because residents would steal them or flush them down the toilet. While I’ve advanced in my career since then I still wear one. I like knowing that even if my phone dies I still know what time it is, especially since I don’t always have access to a computer on the job.

Interesting info! Definitely didn’t mean any offense or anything! 🙂 I just always have my phone around and also always have a fitbit on, both of which are a handy clock. And I own quite a few watches, I was just commenting on how MANY seem to pop up in sub boxes, coming from the perspective that I personally haven’t worn a watch as more than an accessory since high school (and even then I usually got the time from a beeper! haha!).

I do agree with you though! Fancy seems to like putting watches in their subscription boxes. Any more and I’d probably protest. 🙂

I’ve been a subscriber to Fancy Box since the first one last fall and I have a feeling this will be the final one. It seems The Fancy is just interested in sending kitschy junk month-after-month. Most of it ends up in drawers and is collecting dust.

I’m in the same boat as you, with being a now bored early subscriber! I just opened my Fancy box and got mostly the same items as shown, except a different TKO watch (turquoise skeleton) and instead of a smartphone stand I got what they claim are $25 playing cards..
For many months the items haven’t even been kitschy, they have been items available at any big box store. And never items I see in my feed!! So how popular are these actually?
I’ve changed my categories 3 times but haven’t seen a difference.
Though I will regift a few items here and there I also have a bunch of junk collecting dust…
I think this month was the death knell of what used to be a really fun subscription box.

Yep, this confirms it. Just got my box today. Same stuff as you it seems. It’s funny – but the one item that could have redeemed this box for me, the smartphone stand (I could’ve used it), was replaced with playing cards. Worthless.

Ryan

This is EXACTLY why I haven’t taken the leap and subscribed to any of the Fancy boxes yet. The stuff is often interesting or funny (kitschy is the perfect word) but for the price always looks mostly like stuff I would wind up gifting. And is it just me or are there a lot of watches?? Who (besides little kids??) wears watches all the time anymore??

I’m sure they will replace your watch though since it is damaged, but that is such a bummer to open up a broken item :-/

That is disappointing that The Fancy doesn’t curate their boxes better and have original items attached to each respective box. Since they send duplicates of items no matter what box you are subscribed to, you’d think they would/should track who already received what.
