Finding great quality hair care products that work for me has always been a struggle. Being multi-ethnic adds to the challenge, specifically because I have two different hair textures on my head. So, when I got the opportunity to try Prose, along with two other MSA writers, I was ecstatic.

Naomi’s Hair Story
I, unfortunately, made a grave, grave mistake during quarantine and dyed my hair. That’s probably something I won’t ever do again, but I do have some residual damage from the process, and I’m working to get my hair to a healthier place again. My hair texture is curly and thick, between 3C and 4C. I don’t use any styling tools besides a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment when I don’t have the time to air dry. In general, I want more shine, more moisture, more hair growth, curl definition, and less shedding.
Naomi’s Prose Routine
Custom Shampoo + Conditioner
The shampoo had a wonderful light, natural scent that I really enjoyed, and it lathered up so very nicely. A little definitely went a long way. I did notice that it left my hair more tangled than usual, but that’s understandable because I requested my formula be silicone-free, which is better for my hair but does add an extra detangling step. The conditioner left my hair feeling soft and hydrated. And I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical of it at first since it felt a bit thin, but it definitely delivered.
Custom Hair Oil
My absolute favorite product I received from Prose was their amazing hair oil. It smells absolutely divine. My thirsty hair sucked it up like it was the only glass of water in a desert. I definitely used more than the recommended amount, but then again, I do have a lot of hair. By the end, my hair was shinier and less frizzy.
Sophia’s Hair Story
My hair is curly - it’s between a 2C and 3A. It tends to get frizzy and if I don’t put it in a silk bonnet at night, it can loose its curls. I highlight it every six months or so. And I don’t really use any styling tools, I simply diffuse it after washing it twice a week. My scalp has started to get oilier these days but it’s only because I’ve been consistently working out at the gym. I would love to have more definition in my hair, as well as keep it hydrated. Although I’m used to the frizz, I’d love to keep it at a minimum.
Sophia’s Prose Routine
Custom Shampoo + Conditioner
I really liked my custom solution, which was also silicone-free. The shampoo and conditioner were very light formulas that smelled like Rose, Geranium, and Blue Iris. Immediately after I got out of the shower, I noticed my hair looked softer and shinier, and it had been easier to detangle. I have previously used products that have actually destroyed my hair and it wasn’t a pleasant situation. I really like the fact that Prose really listened to my requests in formula and gave me a product that my hair actually liked.
Custom Curl Cream
I then applied the curl cream and my own gel to style it before diffusing it. My hair looked defined and felt soft to the touch. I slept with a hair bonnet and the next day, it looked great. But a day later, my hair had started to lose its definition in the front but I assume it was because I didn’t do my usual styling routine because I wanted to see how well the curl cream worked. In the back, however, curls are intact and I could benefit from doing a half up and half down style to show them off.
Megan’s Hair Story
My hair is thicker and coarse and lands at about a 2B in terms of hair type. It is prone to frizziness and waves, though they aren’t always pretty. I am also extremely lazy when it comes to my hair. I literally wash it at night and then sleep on it damp.
I have tried a lot of custom hair care. And, for the most part, I have always found custom formulas (regardless of brand) to be a totally different experience than store-bought. My hair always feels smoother, shinier, and happier. But Prose brought something different to the table for me.
Megan’s Prose Routine
Custom Shampoo + Conditioner
The shampoo lathers SO well. I have super thick hair and I would say I need 2 small pumps for a very dense and luxurious lather. My hair felt smoother as soon as I began to rinse. We have hard water here in Pennsylvania and Prose factors in details like that. And I have to believe whatever they are doing is working because my hair felt silky immediately.
The conditioner was another hit for me. At first, I thought it felt a little thin, but, again, a little goes a long way. Mine was tinted a light purple to help banish brassiness and was the same wonderful Signature scent. It felt like it sealed in my hair’s newfound softness.
Custom Leave-In Conditioner
A leave-in conditioner like this one from Prose is the perfect way to fight frizz with the least effort possible. My hair is noticeably shinier and less prone to flyaways when I use this stuff. It is also light enough to use on dry hair if I need a little extra shine boost. And, of course, it smells amazing. My favorite combo right now is spritzing my hair with the leave-in conditioner and then gently brushing it. It creates a beautiful finish that I didn’t even know my hair was capable of.
Verdict
In just a few weeks, we all fell prey to the siren’s call of Prose’s ultra-customizable hair care line. There was a very in-depth consultation to understand not only your hair care goals but also environmental and lifestyle factors like exercise, water intake, and supplement or medication intake. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that we are all individuals that are different and unique, and our hair is no different. Highly customizable products are the way of the future.
