When my dog started showing signs of digestive trouble, itchy paws, and low energy, I knew it was time to look more closely at what I was feeding him. I'd heard a lot about fresh food subscriptions - but with so many options out there (raw, cooked, etc), I wanted to see for myself, and my pup, how they actually compared.
We tested four subscription brands over four weeks: two raw brands (We Feed Raw and Maev) and two gently cooked brands (Ollie and Spot & Tango). I looked at four things that matter most to me, and most dog owners: ingredients, health impact, convenience, and cost. While each brand had their unique benefits, one brand consistently stood out to me in every category. Here's what I found:
- Ingredients vary more than you'd expect. Not all "fresh" food is created equal. Processing method, protein sourcing, and filler content differ significantly across brands - and those details have a real impact on what your dog is actually getting.
- Health improvements aren't guaranteed. Some brands showed noticeable changes in digestion, coat, and energy within weeks. Others, not so much. The type of processing, raw vs. cooked, seemed to play a bigger role than I anticipated.
- Convenience is pretty comparable across the board. All four brands offer customized plans and home delivery. The main differences come down to format: frozen packs, pellets, or refrigerated trays.
- Price ranges more than you'd think. Meals ranged from $3.51 to $5.88 per serving, and cost didn't always track with quality or results.

Every dog is different, and what works will depend on your pet's specific needs. That said, if you're looking for a starting point, the data from my four weeks of testing pointed pretty clearly in one direction. We’re sticking with We Feed Raw.
