Wantable vs. Rent the Runway: Which Can Meet My Updated Style Needs?

My style is changing, help! I’m experiencing a late emergence from everyday COVID sweatpants, the baby I “just had” is now a toddler, I’m finally feeling a sense of self return, but it’s a new version of me that I’m not sure how to dress.

When will I ever have time to shop? Answer: never. So I tried the two most popular clothing subscriptions, Wantable, a personal styling service,  and Rent the Runway, a clothing rental service.

Here are the fruits of my experience:

If you’re short on time… Wantable

There are some women out there who know exactly what silhouettes they like and they’re sticking to it; that’s not me. I’m more of an “I’ll know it when I see it” type, but unfortunately that means the world of options is overwhelming.

With Wantable, you can browse and favorite items if you wish, but the box of 7 pieces you’re sent each month also has clothing chosen by a stylist based on your color, pattern, and occasion preferences. I love this!

With Rent the Runway, you’re on your own. Selecting your own pieces gives you autonomy, but it’s too time-consuming and requires too clear of a head than what I can muster right now for items I’m only renting.

If you want a versatile, everyday clothes update… Wantable

This wasn’t always the case, but these days, I’m working from home, spending a ton of time at playgrounds, and on a luxurious day, lounging on the porch. I don’t live at the Ritz.

I want to look and feel “together” for my day, but I’m full casual, and I want my entire wardrobe to be able to be worn together. While Rent the Runway does have everyday items on offer, they’re more elevated than what the Average Jane like me might need. Wantable Style Edit’s vibe is relaxed and current.

And if you want to spiff up a bit, they have options for that, too! Wantable also has an Active Edit and a Sleep & Body Edit for women if you want to target those categories.

If you have a special occasion coming up… Rent the Runway

When I started having babies and my body changed, I cleared out my closetful of special occasion dresses. Now when I’m invited to a wedding or fundraiser, I like renting a dress that matches the dress code and theme. Rent the Runway’s designer clothing rentals are great for this!

Wantable also has some nicer pieces on offer, though, so if you want to find a dress for keeps, let your stylist know you’ve got something fancy coming up.

If you want to give a trend a try… Wantable

I’m no spring chicken, and I need a wardrobe that’s highly functional—but I do like to have fun with what I’m wearing, too.

Wantable’s free shipping & returns make trying trends risk-free. With Rent the Runway you’re paying for every rental you order, so it’s less flexible for taking a chance on a style you’re not sure about.

If you’d like recommendations from expert stylists… Wantable

Looking for a super-specific item from a certain designer? Rent the Runway is an awesome place to look. But if you’re open to suggestions from someone who has their finger on the pulse of what’s “in” right now, Wantable is the way to go.

Wantable’s team of stylists take your wishlist and preferences into account, and personalize every box to your needs. On top of opening your world to all the possibilities from someone who’s familiar with their full range of offerings, it also saves a ton of time.

I love shopping, but in a season of life when it’s not my priority, I still want to look and feel my best. 💃🏻

I’ve found that Wantable is a really easy and affordable way to shop. I love that they offer free shipping and returns, a 20% discount if you buy 5 or more items, and that the $20 styling fee is credited toward any item you keep.

It’s been a great way to upgrade my wardrobe to one that feels “me” right now.
