Summer is here in all of its glory! Longer days, wonderful vitamin D, sun and warmth, and lots of outdoor adventures like beach days, hiking, and camping.
But by exploring so much natural beauty on the outside, my own hair had become, well, anything but beautiful!
Yes, Mother Nature is delightful, but being outside so much meant that my hair was exposed to wind, dry heat, and humidity. The result of all my time outdoors left me with dreaded frizzy hair, greasy roots, UV heat damage, and dry ends.
So when I discovered Function of Beauty’s customizable shampoo and conditioner formulas, I knew I needed it immediately!
Because I’m able to easily customize my formula based on my hair’s changing needs each season, it’s the perfect addition to my summer beauty staples…and beyond. Unlike store-bought products that are generic and not suited to my lifestyle, Function of Beauty can carry me through all four seasons.
The Path to My Hair's Summer-Defining Formula
I started by filling out a simple survey on the Function of Beauty website.
The survey includes talking about my hair type, scent, and color preferences, and up to 5 hair goals. My hair is straight, medium in texture, and oily. My preferences included sulfate-free formula, “nude (p)each” scent in medium intensity which literally smells like fresh-picked peaches from an orchard, and a peachy color to match which has such a great summer vibe and makes it super fun. My hair goals included hydrate, anti-frizz, oil control for my roots, thermal protection, and replenish my ends.
A couple of days later, my formula arrived at my doorstep in all of its glory.
It came with re-usable pumps to put into each new shipment, and their bottles are made of 100% recycled plastic. A pamphlet was included with my customized formula details, as well as an adorable sheet of stickers.

The Results of My Fresh, Made-to-Order Hair Care
I love so many things about Function of Beauty! I feel great knowing the ingredients have been chosen for my hair type, structure, and moisture level.
Honestly, I never realized what an immediate improvement I’d see with a customized formula suited to my needs. Here are just some of my impressions:
- Despite the fact that the shampoo is sulfate free, it still lathers incredibly well. A little goes a long way!
- The conditioner left my hair feeling so soft but not heavy, with no layer of residue like sulfate-based conditioners.
- Once my hair dried, it was totally smooth and frizz-free, with great texture.
- My hair sparkles in the sun and I’m happy knowing I can spend long days adventuring outside knowing it’s protected from the UV rays and the elements.
- Generally I like to add texture/waves with my curling iron, and these formulas definitely help keep my hair healthy from breakage or heat damage.
- Last but not least, I feel good knowing that all Function of Beauty products are formulated without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, or gluten, and are always certified vegan and cruelty-free.
For Every Season, a Season-Defining Formula
In the fall, my hair will get less greasy as the days cool down, and I’ll definitely need some help with volume as it gets rainier here in the Pacific Northwest. I’ll be able to update my formula easily on the website to accommodate those changes, and I’ll probably get a fun fall scent and color to match the vibe. I’m leaning toward their pear scent (which makes me nostalgic for biting into a juicy pear on a crisp fall day!).
It’s great to be able to use the same brand that I can trust, season after season, that’s also conveniently shipped right to my door right when I need more. I no longer have to waste time at the store and search for a different brand/type of product every time my needs change.
