Whenever I hit a bit of a hair slump, upgrading my hair routine is always the perfect pick-me-up. After scrolling through TikTok, I narrowed my quest down to two brands: Prose and Ouai. Keep reading below to find out my favorite!
If you want the cleanest ingredients…Prose
Both Prose and Ouai are paraben-free, phthalate-free, and cruelty-free. That said, Prose takes it a step further by being formulated without sulfates, mineral oils, or GMOs. You even have the option to personalize your formulas for specific sensitivities, such as silicone-free, fragrance-free, or vegan.
If you want a just-for-you formula…Prose
Prior to learning about Prose, I didn’t know that fully customizable haircare was a thing. Prose has you take an online consultation that takes into account over 80 factors — from micro details like hair thickness, condition, and texture, to macro considerations like the weather in your ZIP code, your workout routine, stress level, diet, and more.
While Ouai also has a quiz, it only matches you with products that are right for your hair type, rather than making a unique formula to address your hair needs.
I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have something made especially for me.
If you want an in-person shopping experience…Ouai
Because Prose is made to order, they don’t have any retail presence. Ouai, on the other hand, can be found at Sephora, Urban Outfitters, Ulta, and more.
If you’re one of those people that love in-store shopping and get a kick out of smelling the products prior to ordering them, Ouai is your ouai to go (see what I did there).
If you want the sustainable option…Prose
While I have to tip my hat to both Prose and Ouai for making refillable options and recyclable bottles, Prose definitely goes the extra mile. By only making custom orders, they cut back on so much waste — did you know that 40% of mass-produced beauty and personal care products go unsold and end up in landfills?
Talk about needless waste and additional CO2 emissions from Ouai.
My winner is…Prose
Overall, while Ouai put up a good fight, it was Prose that took home my heart. To me, the fully customizable formula is truly revolutionary in my haircare routine, and something I intend to continue moving forward.
