Prose vs. Olaplex: My Luscious Locks Pick

My number-one priority? Looking fresh & put together as I step out of my apartment and into the world. And a big part of this is healthy hair: shiny, bouncy locks are as essential to my identity as the clothes I wear or the music I listen to.

I wish I could say I simply “woke up like this,” but I’m actually just ultra-invested in snagging the best haircare out there. In the spirit of making sure I’m up-to-speed with what everyone’s using these days, I tried both Prose and Olaplex. You might be surprised by which came out on top…

If you want good-for-you ingredients you can pronounce… Prose

I don’t know about you, but when I read ingredients that are 16 letters long, I get a little wary. Personally, I’d rather keep it simple and focus on clean, non-toxic ingredients that I know do wonders for my hair. Whereas Olaplex’s number one ingredient is Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate (try saying that 3 times…), Prose is quite the opposite.

Prose not only makes completely customizable formulas, but they do so without any parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oils, or GMOs (that means no harmful chemicals and nothing that could damage your hair). Their clean ingredients are specifically chosen to help you get closer to your hair goals. My shampoo formula includes butterfly pea flower for color protection and cucumber oil for hair health, and honestly, my hair feels the most nourished it’s ever been.

If you want products that really says “for you”… Prose

It’s true that Olaplex is some of the most premium hair care you can buy. But hear me out – even the gold standard of hair care is never going to hit the mark as well as a product that considers factors like hair texture, the weather in your ZIP code, your stress levels, and goals, among other things. You get all of that (and more!) with Prose.

Olaplex’s focus is more on general repair with 10 products in their line, but there’s no flexibility to customize the formulas to your individual needs. On the other hand, Prose doubles down on ensuring your custom product is tailored to you and only you by taking into consideration factors you wouldn’t normally think of, such as diet and workout routine. This means that there are billions of ingredient combinations for endless “yous.”

If you don’t want to wait… Olaplex

Prose’s personalized products are made-to-order, so you won’t find Prose on the shelves of your local shops. You will, however, find Olaplex at Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, salons, and various online retailers. Prose, on the other hand, doesn’t mass produce and cuts down on waste by custom making every order just for you. Not only is it a win for the environment, but your hair feels the benefits from formulas made with only you in mind!

I’m still convinced that my Prose Custom Leave-In Conditioner trumps Olaplex’s No. 3 Hair Perfector any day of the week, but if you absolutely can’t wait for Prose’s quick, 5-10 day delivery, you know where to find Olaplex.

If you want products that adapt and change with you…  Prose

Prose’s Review & Refine® feature ensures that your custom hair care is going to evolve with you, year after year. After you receive your order from Prose, you’ll have the opportunity to rate and review each product — how does it make your hair look, feel, and behave? — and Prose will update your formulas to make your next order even better.  Customer satisfaction here really shows – Olaplex is known and vetted by stylists, but Prose takes it a step further and has been reviewed by 345,000+ real customers on Review & Refine®–and all of their hair concerns are unique!

Because every Prose product is made to order, they also update your formulas with the seasons so you maintain beautiful strands all year long. How’s that for an A+ user experience and your best hair yet?

My not-so-secret favorite… Prose

I wasn’t sure that Prose would take the cake over Olaplex, but I’m pleasantly surprised with my findings. Prose is all the things I love: it’s personalized, it’s good for the environment and you, and most importantly, I’m looking great — if I do say so myself!
