When I hit my 30s, I realized I needed to turn up the volume on my haircare game. How could I give myself anything less? Luckily, the internet was showing me all kinds of quality shampoo and conditioner brands like Prose and Oribe, so I took the bait and tried both. Comparing the two, here’s what I found:

If you want hair care that’s yours and only yours... Prose

All Prose haircare is fully personalized based on 80 factors — including needs you didn’t even know you had. Hair type, length, oiliness, dryness, density, shedding, washing habits, and so much more are taken into account. They even use geotagging to tailor your formulas to your region’s water hardness and pollution, so that by washing your hair (something you’re doing anyway) your locks can be protected.

If you want an easy one-stop shop to meet your #hairgoals... Prose

Shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, mousse, oil — Oribe has the basics covered in their line of haircare. But Prose has more product options, including hair and scalp masks, styling gel, dry shampoo, and leave-in conditioner. And, of course, every single one of them is personalized to your larger goals for how you want your hair to look. The best part is: you aren’t left to fend for yourself in deciding which would best serve you — your hair quiz will give you recommended products for your needs.

If you prefer an in-store over an online experience... Oribe

If customized haircare isn’t a priority, then Oribe can get the job done. But the truth is, Oribe shampoo can’t help solve issues related to frizz, heaviness from product, or shedding. Prose will always be there when you decide to make the switch from all-in-one products to one-of-a-kind solutions.

If you want to ditch the harsh chemicals found in most shampoos... Prose

If you’re paying upwards of $50 for a bottle of shampoo, it shouldn’t be dredging you in chemicals, right? Oribe products are sulfate and paraben-free, and allergen-friendly. But Prose is almost half the cost and it’s also formulated without phthalates, mineral oils, or GMOs. Have specific sensitivities? With Prose, you have the option to also make your products vegan or silicone-free. There are seven different amazing scents to choose from, as well as a fragrance-free option.

If you want a waste-conscious option…Prose

Both Prose and Oribe offer refills on a subscription basis. (Thank you for being with the times, guys!) Both are eco-friendly options, reducing the amount of plastic making their way to landfills. With Prose, your refills will be shipped without pumps since those can be reused. (If you end up needing new pumps, they’ll send you more with your next shipment.) With Oribe, you’ll be sent a pouch of new shampoo and conditioner to refill your current bottle. Both are mailed in plastic-free recyclable packaging. But Prose takes it to the next level by only making custom orders, they cut back on so much waste.

If you’re looking for a more affordable luxury…Prose

Oribe shampoos cost $53 for the 8.5oz bottle and I just can’t justify that cost, especially when Prose is specifically formulated for my hair needs and will continue to improve as my needs change. Prose costs $32 for a one-time purchase of the 8.5oz shampoo or $27.20 if you subscribe.

The overall winner is…Prose

Both of these shampoos and conditioners are high-end and a step above what you’ll find on grocery store shelves. But after trying each, Prose is simply the standout with its in-depth customization. If you want dedicated support and real results for your hair goals, Prose is the brand that delivers on its promises.
