As a seasoned skincare aficionado, I will admit that few things excite me more than the promise of a sleek new device. And I have mature skin, so any product description that includes the words “firm,” “smooth,” or “glowing” is a product I’m eager to get my hands on!

I’ve been reading up about the benefits of both red light therapy and microcurrent devices recently, but never having experienced the magic myself, I decided to take the plunge and put two popular skincare handhelds to the test: the Radiant Renewal Skincare Wand by Solawave, a red light therapy wand, and the NuFACE FIX, a microcurrent device.

Both make a great addition to any skincare regimen, but only one blew me away:

For fading dark marks and reducing the appearance of blemishes: Solawave

Right out of the gate, Solawave impressed me with the Radiant Renewal Skincare Wand’s ability to reduce under eye puffiness and smooth fine lines, but it also made a significant impact on blemishes and dark marks.

When it comes to mature skin, most products on the market are geared toward lifting, rejuvenating, and smoothing– all things Solawave’s red light therapy does incredibly well. But uneven skin tone is still a major concern for many women 50+, and I love having a device in my routine that addresses that, too.

After just a few weeks of applying the Renew Complex Serum and using the Solawave for five minutes twice daily, sun spots that I’ve had for years are less noticeable, and my blemishes seem to be healing much faster.

The NuFACE FIX does not claim to target dark marks or hyperpigmentation, which makes sense given it only has microcurrent.

For the cost conscious among us: NuFACE

The NuFACE FIX is available as a Starter Kit, and costs $159. The kit includes the NuFACE FIX Device and the NuFACE FIX Serum, a must have for microcurrent conduction. Since everything is included, it’s the slightly cheaper option of the two.

Conversely, the Radiant Renewal Skincare Wand with Red Light Therapy is priced at $169, and the Renew Complex Activating Serum designed to use in conjunction with the wand can be bundled in a kit for $189.

If you’d like to keep the price a little closer to the FIX, I recommend signing up for Solawave’s email and SMS lists to get 20% off, making the kit just a tiny bit above $150.

For improving the absorption of serums and creams: Solawave

One of the coolest features included with the Radiant Renewal Skincare Wand is its galvanic current, a safe and gentle form of electrotherapy that improves your skin’s absorption of topicals like serums and moisturizers.

Put more simply, this primes your skin to better activate and boosts the results of your entire skincare routine, so you can get better results out of fewer products. Saving time + money while getting glowing, dewy skin? I’m in.

The NuFACE FIX includes a hydrating gel for conducting purposes, but the wand’s microcurrent does not seem to improve the serum’s efficacy on its own.

For those who like to travel without excess luggage: Solawave

Powerful and effective as it’s been for me, the Radiant Renewal Skincare Wand is remarkably small. It’s super narrow, easy to tuck away in a purse or a makeup tote, and it comes in a protective plastic traveling case that’s not much larger than the wand itself.

Conversely, the FIX is longer, bulkier, and doesn’t come with its own carrying case.

Along with skincare, traveling is a great love of mine, and being able to easily combine the two is a major plus. My skincare routine helps me unwind at the end of the night, and Solawave’s convenient size means I can take all my products on-the-go without feeling overburdened.

My ultimate winner: Solawave

Real talk: I’m terrible at sticking to routines. But I can’t stop using my Solawave Radiant Skincare Wand. All it took was a few minutes a day over 2-3 weeks to transform my complexion from dull to glowing, and I can’t see myself going back.

As an added bonus, I’ve even noticed a difference in how products I’ve used for years are working…my salicylic acid is finally noticeably reducing acne overnight, and my Drunk Elephant moisturizer isn’t caking the outer layer of my skin anymore.

My only real regret is that I didn’t jump on the red light therapy train sooner. If you’re a skincare device junkie like me, I suggest giving Solawave a try!

Everyone has different skin, so while it seems to work for the overwhelming majority of their customers (and all those beauty editors that selected it for awards), they let you return it if you don’t love your results.

And we love a brand that stands behind their products.
