I Had Major Doubts About This Custom Haircare Brand — Until I Actually Tried It

I don’t know about you, but I’m a skeptic by nature. Typically, when things look too good to be true, in my opinion, it usually is. So when I first heard of the custom haircare phenomenon, I thought it was just another gimmick. I’d been using drug store shampoos and conditioners my whole life - why change now?

Well, like every true skeptic, there is a turning point in us taking the plunge. My hair was frizzy and dull, and my scalp dry, itchy, and flaky (yuck!). I had hit my hair rock bottom, and my drug store shampoo was just not cutting it anymore. With nowhere to go but up, I finally decided to ride the wave of custom haircare. After a bit of research, I saw that Prose had thousands of glowing reviews, so decided to give it a shot - and boy am I happy that I did! Keep reading below to find out why I'm never going back to drug store products again.

1. In-depth hair consultation that sees the full picture

To start, Prose has you take a comprehensive consultation. I was surprisingly impressed that it takes into account every factor that impacts your hair and scalp health before building your custom hair care line. I’ve never even thought about how environmental factors specific to my zip code could affect my hair and scalp, but Prose did! Their attention to detail sparked a sense of optimism amongst my sea of doubts - I was starting to think these products might actually work.

2. Personalized formulas that address both your hair AND scalp needs

When delivery day came, my optimism grew. Not only was the packaging adorable (they say “for Steph” on them!), but I was greeted by four products: pre-shampoo mask, shampoo, conditioner, and curl cream. For context, I wanted to share a couple things about my hair – it’s thick, long, coarse, and curly. Not only do I have unruly hair, but I’ve also spent years dealing with (now worsening) scalp psoriasis. Because of this, it’s very important that my haircare products address both my hair AND my scalp needs. Prose promised both of these, so I had high hopes for my first wash.

3. Quality so good a little goes a long way

Each further interaction with Prose had my doubts dwindling. To start, the Pre-Shampoo mask was exactly what I was hoping for; it’s thin enough that I had no trouble getting it onto my scalp without losing all of it in my long hair. I REALLY liked that it was just as easy to rinse out as it was to apply, and the best part is my scalp felt SO clean and refreshed. Talk about a big win!

As I worked my way through the products, I couldn’t help but notice that just ONE pump of shampoo gave me the best shampooing experience I’ve had in I don’t even know how long. The lather and fragrance were amazing, and my hair was literally squeaky clean when I was done.

4. Haircare without all the junk - no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes, mineral oils, or GMOs

The conditioner did not disappoint either - my favorite part is that all ingredients are sustainable and are a solution to an actual problem, uniquely formulated to fix the challenges my hair is facing. The poppy oil was a nice touch to restore my shine. Oh, and I can’t forget - they’re all free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oils, and GMOs! Even more-so, you’re able to make your formula vegan, silicone-free, or fragrance-free. Silicone-free, yes please!

I finished with the curl cream, and not to be dramatic, but I haven’t seen my curls this defined since I was a kid. My hair was hydrated and frizz-free, feats I just got used to not having. Prose turned me from a skeptic to a supporter - my only regret is that I didn’t give it a try sooner!
