Time for your little one to test out their first set of wheels?

Learning to ride a bike is a quintessential childhood milestone, and as a parent, you want to make the experience as safe, enjoyable, and successful as possible for your kiddo. Fortunately, learning how to ride a bike is easier than ever with this new technique!

Ready to ride? Here's our step-by-step guide on how to get started:

1. Safety first!

Before you even think of grabbing the wheels, make sure your child has a properly fitting helmet. It should sit level on their head, across the middle of the forehead, and at least one inch from the eyebrows. Also, ensure the seat height is adjusted so your child can sit comfortably with their feet flat on the ground, providing a sense of stability and control. You can ensure you have the correct size bike with this nifty ridesizer tool.

2. Walk the bike (no pedals)

On a flat surface, have your child walk the bike while seated. This helps them get familiar with balancing and steering the frame. Encourage them to practice until they feel comfortable and in control.

Removing the bike pedals allows your child to focus on mastering balance and steering before introducing pedaling, so they don't have to learn everything all at once. We like Guardian Bikes for this because they are specifically designed to easily convert into a balance bike and include a pedal wrench for easy removal and installation.

3. Glide and coast

Once your child is comfortable walking the bike, encourage them to push off the ground and lift their feet, gliding for short distances. This teaches them to balance independently while keeping their feet ready to catch themselves if needed.

Next, find a gentle slope and have your child coast down with their feet up. The slight incline provides momentum, helping them adjust to balancing independently for longer distances. Stay at the bottom of the slope to provide a target and reassurance, and encourage them to keep their feet up for longer periods as they gain confidence.

4. Ride with pedals

When your child can consistently coast for 15 seconds or more, it's time for pedals! Hold the bike steady as your child starts pedaling, providing support and encouragement as they build confidence. Teach them to start with one foot on the ground and the other on the pedal at the 2 o'clock position for optimal leverage.

5. Brake like a pro

Bikes with a patented braking system, like Guardian Bikes' SureStop, are a game-changer for kids learning to ride. With a single lever hand brake that intelligently controls both brakes, it eliminates the risk of head-over-handlebar accidents and provides quick, controlled stops. Teach your child to squeeze the brake lever gently and gradually for smooth, safe stopping.

The Takeaway

Remember: learning to ride a bike is an exciting milestone, and it should be fun for everyone involved. Be patient, offer lots of encouragement, and celebrate each small victory along the way.

With this guide and the perfect convertible bike, you'll set your child up for success and build up their confidence in a safe, enjoyable way. Your little one will be pedaling off to new adventures in no time!
