Hey Moms, I Found the Hack to Getting Our Hair Back Just Like the Good Old Days

Alright, fellow moms, who else has their hair permanently in a messy bun post-baby?

I thought the dark days were over after my postpartum hair loss finally subsided, but now I just don’t have the time to take care of my hair the same way I used to. Forget specialty haircare and styling products–I can’t even fit a hairdryer into my schedule most of the time. I used to research the best shampoos and conditioners for my hair type (thick strands, dry ends, slightly wavy, sometimes color-treated), use a dry oil on the second day after washing, and attempt some kind of styling at least on weekends and special events.

Now, with a toddler and work from home, it’s in a messy bun 75% of the time and most of my pre-baby specialty hair products go untouched. I wanted to get my good hair days back, but without the complicated routine that I used to have. After I found out about The Earthling Co.’s shampoo & conditioner bars, I decided to give them a whirl. It's $32 for both the shampoo and conditioner bar and they last for anywhere from 2-6 months, so the price per wash is pretty low and it seemed like a low risk thing to try (especially with the 30-day money back guarantee if you don't like the product). Here’s what I thought.

Using the Shampoo & Conditioner Bar

I had heard of shampoo bars before, but never pulled the trigger because I thought it would be like washing my hair with a bar of soap (which I have unfortunately experienced before due to a misleading hotel description). To my surprise, The Earthling Co. shampoo bars don’t feel like bar soap at all. On my hair, it felt slick and slippery, just like traditional liquid shampoo. It also lathered very quickly despite being sulfate-free, which impressed me because my sulfate-free liquid shampoos don’t usually generate much foam. I’ve missed the foamy quality quite a bit, so I really liked this aspect!

The conditioner bar took a little getting used to at first. The instructions are to work your way up from the ends, which was a bit of a learning curve. The conditioner bar doesn't lather so it took a minute to distribute it throughout my hair, but once I got it going, it did a great job moisturizing my hair. With liquid conditioner, I would use something like 4-5 pumps each time to get enough coverage. With the bar, it was only a few swipes up and down.

Back when I actually had time to dedicate to my hair, I would use a curl cream at the end of my routine to bring out the natural waves in my hair. Curl creams work by coating each strand with a thin film that helps smooth the hair’s cuticle, thereby preventing hair from locking or tangling. Arguably, a good conditioner could accomplish something similar, and personally, I found that The Earthling Co.’s conditioner delivered on this point–my hair feels soft and tangle-free.

My Findings

After using my The Earthling Co. shampoo bar and conditioner bar, I air-dried my hair (which is a fancy way of saying that I forgot about my hair and went about the rest of my day). When my hair dried, it showed my slight natural wave even without the use of curl cream. My hair also felt very soft and looked shiny and voluminous, despite air drying in low humidity and using no styling products.

I honestly think that The Earthling Co. shampoo and conditioner bars are the secret to my low-effort good hair days. There is no universe that I would prioritize how my hair looks over my daughter (or even an extra 10 minutes of sleep), but with The Earthling Co., I can have the best of both worlds.

The Final Verdict

The Earthling Co. shampoo and conditioner bars are also perfect for travel. Even with TSA PreCheck, I inevitably end up in a situation where I’m asked to pull out all my liquids (I’m looking at you, Newark Liberty). Now I have one less thing to cram into a transparent quart-sized bag. I’m ecstatic to be packing these shampoo and conditioner bars for my next trip instead of their liquid counterparts, or worse: risking having to wash my hair with bar soap again. They’re also so much lighter than liquids which is a huge plus for overpackers like me (and probably 99% of all moms)! So, there you have it–it’s clear to see why The Earthling Co. is making my good hair days way more frequent!
