Goodbye Drugstore Hair Color, Hello Madison Reed

Having been blessed with the blah hue of “dishwater blonde”, I started coloring my hair at 13. Since then, I’ve been blonde, chestnut, candy apple red–I’ve tried every box color brand available at my local drugstore.

However, I recently tried Madison Reed, and it’s been a total game-changer. Here’s why I’m never going back to drugstore color ever again:

1. It Has Everything You Need

The average box dye contains dye, developer, gloves, and conditioner. With Madison Reed, though, you’ll also get barrier cream (so it doesn’t stain), a cleansing wipe (for spills), a hair cap to cover your head while the color is developing, plus shampoo and conditioner.

2. You’re Not On Your Own

Need some help on your color journey? You can chat with a licensed colorist from the comfort of your own home. Sessions typically last 15 minutes, and they’re absolutely free.

One of the Madison Reed colorists helped me select “Firenze”, and I couldn’t be happier. I think it looks like the color I should’ve been born with!

3. New Color When You Need It

So here’s the thing: I’ve been known to stretchhhhhhh the recommended 4-6 week root touch ups because I forget to pick up a box of dye from the drugstore. With Madison Reed, I was able to easily set up recurring shipments so my perfect shade turns up at my doorstep right when it’s time to color.

4. Grays? What Grays?

As you can see in my “before” pic, I started with some noticeable roots. Applying the color was a breeze–no grays here! (Note that even though I colored my hair at home, I still went to get a professional haircut.)

After 27 years, no other brand has come so close to making at-home coloring feel like a salon experience. It’s official: I’m breaking up with the drugstore and going steady with Madison Reed.
