4 Reasons You Should Ditch Resale and Start Renting Instead

Designer thrifting used to be a favorite hobby of mine. Every time I discovered a one-of-a-kind piece at up to 90% off retail price, I’d get a high from the thrill! 🤩

But the thrifting game is so time-consuming, especially if you’re trying to score a deal. High-end designers have raised prices that aren’t even justifiable on the resale market—why would I buy a used dress from 2015 for almost the same price as a brand-new one today? Now, the amazing deals are gone, rare pieces have been snapped up, and the secret’s out.

So, I’ve turned to rentals to get my fashion fix, and I’m just mad I didn’t start renting sooner. Armoire is so much better than buying resale, and here’s why:

1. 🤑 I'm saving money 🤑

Armoire provides a similar value to resale at a lower cost

I used to purchase new-to-me clothing off resale sites at least twice a month—buying a $120 dress here, and a $95 blouse there adds up. After I’d wear something once or twice (for the ‘Gram), it’d get shoved to the back of the closet and forgotten.

With Armoire, I’ve got a revolving closet of designer items, for way less than I’d pay on resale pieces. Whether you choose 4 items for $89, 7 items a month for $119 ($89 for the first month), or unlimited items for $249 a month ($139 for the first month), there’s a tier to fit your budget.

Plus, you don’t have to pay for dry cleaning, repairs, styling, shipping or returns. And if you love what you rent, you can buy it outright at a great discount, too!

2. 🛋️ I can do it from my couch 🛋️

Armoire has all the perks of resale, but it’s much more convenient

When you sign up, you’ll take a quick style quiz to get to know your personal preferences, and then see dozens of curated styles based on your answers. You can customize recommendations by category, weather, and occasion, and filter further based on size, designer, color, silhouette, and more.

When I scrolled through my closet, I was thrilled to see Equipment, Alice + Olivia, Self-Portrait, Rag & Bone, Anna Sui, and Boutique Moschino. After adding a bunch of my most-loved pieces to my favorites list, I selected the ones I wanted to rent now, confirmed the recommended size, and added them to my Armoire case. 🛍️

The experience was a breeze—my case showed up in 2 days! No more spending hours searching through racks of used clothes for a deal or waiting for a special drop to get access to what you really want.

3. ♻️ I can try out new styles ♻️

Armoire lets you experience a variety of items, sustainably

While buying second-hand is more affordable than buying new, what if I want to wear a different outfit every weekend? Renting makes that doable on my budget, and there’s a lot more variety in my closet now than there was when I was buying designer outright. Plus, Armoire keeps their clothes in rotation longer by renting them out, so I feel good about not contributing to fashion waste.

I love the flexibility of Armoire. If you’re not ready to part with a precious piece, all of Armoire’s plans allow you to keep some items and send back others when you swap. I like to call it musical chairs for my closet—I’ll rent 6 items, send 4 back, keep 2, and continue to swap out for the rest of the month. 🎵 🪑

To make returns, simply place the items in the reusable shipping bag, attach the prepaid label, seal it up, and send it back. And if you need to pause or cancel your membership for whatever reason, they make it easy for you.

4. 👗 There's something for everyone 👗

Armoire has stylish options for every body

With resale, I would often find the perfect dress, only to discover it was 3 sizes too big. Armoire’s recommendation model shows me items that fit my style and my body, without the work. Boho, preppy, or trendy? No matter your preferences, Armoire has looks you’ll love. From lace cocktail dresses to oversized blazers and coveralls, they’ve got thousands of high-quality pieces in sizes XS up to 3X (and maternity wear, too) by some of the world’s most popular designer brands.

I love that I can try new styles, designs, colors, and brands without a commitment—and Armoire helped me discover new pieces I never would’ve considered wearing before.

Goodbye resale, hello Armoire

Did somebody say “More convenient and less expensive than resale?” As a lover of all things designer, Armoire is officially a mainstay in my life. On top of that, your closet will have more variety, and it’s sustainable, too. Trust me: you need to get in on this hack! 👗
