Small Business Saturday: The MSA Team’s Favorite Small Businesses To Support
As the holiday season continues, we’ve found ourselves getting a little more creative when it comes to gift-giving! In honor of Small Business Saturday, we’re shedding some light on the importance of supporting small businesses, now more than ever.
In addition to the subscription businesses that we talk about here at MSA, each member of our team has their own local favorites. While shopping has looked a little different this year, we’ll continue to support small businesses both online and in-person (when possible). Read on to hear about our favorite small businesses, and feel free to share the ones you love to support in the comments!
The MSA Team’s Favorite Small Businesses To Support (This Year, And Always!)
In the weeks leading up to Small Business Saturday, our team discussed some of our favorite small businesses, and we wanted to share them with you as well. From local restaurants and coffee shops to independent artists, jewelers, and bookstores, these small businesses have become our favorite way to shop this year! Here are our team’s answers to the question, “What have been your favorite small businesses that you’ve supported this year?”
Megan, Senior Writer:
“I have been adding amazing jewelry pieces by Sasha Handmade to my collection for years now! I can’t get enough of the customizable colors and beautifully sculptural shapes. They are also my most favorite gifts to give because no one can resist how fun these pieces are to hold and wear. Seriously, BIG smiles when they are unwrapped! If perfume is your thing (and it certainly is one of mine) I can’t recommend D.S. and Durga enough! This husband and wife team are based in Brooklyn and their perfumes literally transport you to different places in time. I wear Cowboy Grass all the time because it reminds me of my great grandmother’s cedar chest full of quilts and warm summer days in her backyard. They also have some of the most wonderful candles (Portable Fireplace is a dream!).”

“I subscribe to several different coffee roasters but one of my new favorites has to be Abracadabra Coffee out of Woodstock, VT. I have purchased a bag or two here and there over the past year or so but finally went ahead with a subscription last month. They’ve always got something roasting that sounds great, their packaging is amazing, and I love seeing the box with a big yellow smiley face when I pick up the mail. Bombabird Ceramics is one of my favorite makers here in Pittsburgh. My wife and I use Chelsea’s mugs every morning and have gifted several to our friends and family. We’ve got 2 or 3 of her vases around the house as well, along with a few of the limited run candles from the past few years that still smell wonderful. I’m very much looking forward to her next shop update in hopes I can wrap up some holiday shopping!”
Sara, Content Manager:
“There are so many fantastic small and artisan businesses in my sphere – I feel so lucky!
- My main go-to for gifts is Oceanne. Not only are they known for their metal-smithed jewelry, but they also have an awesome Empowered Women Empower Women collection.
- Jenna VandenBrink paints and sculpts the prettiest ceramics and jewelry (I also love watching her process on Instagram!).
- Con Alma was my favorite pre-Covid spot to hang with friends and enjoy a glass of wine and live jazz. Now I enjoy their menu to go!”
Sarah, Channel Manager:
“Pittsburgh has so many great small businesses and my favorite is White Whale Books. They’ve done a great job transitioning to virtual events this year and they even have subscription box options! I love checking out their Staff Picks and finding a new book to get lost in.”
“I’m a huge fan of Casey Rubber Stamps. It’s a small local stamp shop in New York. They do custom stamps too. The same person has owned it for decades. I love their hours on their website, too: ‘We are open late and most Holidays.’ Personality meets customization meets a classic craft – what’s not to love?!”
Dan, Lead Engineer
“I buy my books from bookshop.org, which in turn supports small indie bookstores!”
Lacey, Product Manager:
Mallory, Community Manager
“I love restaurants, and I’ve seen so many great ones come and go, especially this year! Some of my favorite NYC spots to support are Le Fond, Pates et Traditions, and Osteria Nando. I also have a major obsession with jewelry, and I prefer to support independent, women-led brands, like WWAKE, Melissa Joy Manning, Bario Neal, and Sam Tsia.”
“I love the Little Knittery in LA! It’s such a wonderful knitting store.”
