FYI – Some subscribers received the incorrect Curology product in the May 2020 Allure Beauty Box:

Dear Beauty Box member,

Due to a manufacturing error, some customers may receive a mislabeled product from Curology in their May Box. The tube of the Smooth Sailing Moisturizer may contain Curology’s cleanser instead. Please test the product before applying. A good indicator that you may have received a cleanser instead of the moisturizer is that the cream will suds up if water is added to where you have applied the product.

We apologize for this unexpected error and have worked with the brand to ensure that customers who received the wrong product can request a replacement. Please complete the form at this link for Curology’s Customer Care team by June 30th in order to request your replacement: check your email for the link

For Allure customers who choose to take advantage of Curology’s free trial offer (S&H not included), they will also be offering an additional $10 off the customers second order as an apology, if they sign up through – check your email for the link.

OMG… I am sooo glad you guys told me… I used it twice so far & was wondering why the consistently was so weird, when i applied it, it did not sink into my skin, it just smeared around & wouldn’t dry, i thought it was because it was a gel cream but this explains it all. Will def fill out that email asap. Thank you!

  2. I got the cleanser, too, but thankfully tested it out after seeing the email. The smell was terrible. I used a little of it this morning and tossed the rest in the trash. If this is an example of the brand, I am definitely not missing much.

It feels like anyone from the street can fill this out to get free product. I mean, does Allure even have my shipping address? I would think they don’t and Amazon does.

  4. Yes I opened and tried mine and its definitely cleanser. I will go to the updated page now to see about entering my info. I did not want to put anything into a blank page because anything could have been written around it as I’m sure you can understand. I sub through amazon and didn’t receive an email or any notice, this page is the only way I found out (thank you MSA !!) And thank you Kelsey for responding.

  5. I’m confused now. So yesterday I clicked on the email link that Allure sent me and the website only had spaces for my contact info, which I filled out. No other explanation. So now that that page is updated with more info, do I have to go and fill it out again? Or did they get my info the first time I filled it out? Ugh, what confusion!

  6. I appreciate the reply but there are a lot of Allure subscribers through Amazon. Amazon has not contacted its customers, nor has Allure reached out to the Amazon subscribers. So the only way they would know is if they are seeing things like this post.

  8. Just in case I resubmitted my info now that they have updated the form. I noticed at the end that they plan to send a larger size moisturizer out as the replacement: “We are so sorry for our mistake! Thank you for letting us know you received our cleanser instead of our moisturizer. We are working on getting you a new, larger 25 mL bottle of our moisturizer and will keep you updated via email.” (The one in the box is 15 mL, well, 15 mL of cleanser, lol.)

  12. They changed the Curology contact form. The added an explanation now compared to when the e-mail first went out linking you to just a blank form. I filled it out again.

    • Thanks for letting us know. Like you, I had completed the form that just asked for mailing information. I am much more confident now, with their new form, that my information will correctly be applied. That said, while I got the cleanser in the moisturizer tube, it is a nice cleanser!

  14. I signed up to allure through amazon in order to get my box earlier than when allure sent it out. I didnt use the product yet from.alluren it was still in the box when I checked it out. It was the cleanser. I filled out the form.and they statement after I filled out the form.claimed that they would.mail.be a large bottle of the moisturizer.

    • I also subscribe through Amazon. How did you get a link to the new form? I have never received an email from Allure directly.

  16. I’m glad both had a safety deal. I had not used the earlier tube either but both are cleansers. Seems very mild and I can use with my French girl powder. I will try alone but seems so gentle not sure if it will remove sunscreen. I can never have too many cleansers and one can go in my pandemic purse kit.

  18. I used this as an overnight moisturizer last week and couldn’t figure out why my face broke out everywhere, since I’m not prone to breakouts at all, even when I try new skincare. Just checked it and sure enough, it suds up when I add water. So disappointed! I’ve had to skip wearing makeup for a whole week because of this.

    • Same happened to me! The breakout on my chin in particular looks and feels like a chemical burn. I also had used it as an overnight moisturizer 🙁

      I am so sorry about this and understand the frustration.

      Our cleanser is mild, but of course cleansers are designed to be rinsed off rather than left on, so mild temporary skin irritation may result in some people who have more sensitive skin.
      If you your have any irritation, treat your skin gently until this clears up. You may want to avoid any products with active ingredients for several days.
      I hope that you will give us another chance and have completed the form to request your replacement.

  19. Unfortunately, I put mine on as soon as I opened my box because I happened to go downstairs while my serum sank in. Hubby had put the mail on the kitchen table that evening. I slathered it on my face and neck and told him it felt weird lol. I slept with it on…yikes! That was maybe 3 days ago? Tested by mine today after getting this email, in the palms of my hands, and I had lots of bubbles.

  20. Agree that it is Allure who needs to make this right. The landing page for the Curology link is not clear & not something I feel good about typing my information into. Instead of the guessing game, Allure needs to fix the flub.

    • Why Allure? They have no control over whether a company sends them mislabeled products for distribution. If boxes were missing products or the products were packed in a faulty way, that would be on Allure, but this seems to be clearly on Curology. To my mind, all Allure should be responsible fornis reaching out to subscribers and directing them to Curology.

      • Because my contract is with Allure, not Curology. And yes, it is Allure’s responsibility to make sure what they are purchasing from outside vendors is safe and correctly labeled before Allure sends it out to subscribers.

  21. So that’s why my face is so irritated after using it. It’s been caked with cleanser all night! Yikes.

    • I really want to like Allure. But with last months leaky moisturizer and now this, it is hard. Which is why I joined it through Amazon. You forego the welcome gift, but you get customer service that actually works.
      I’ve asked for a refund. I suggest you do, too.

      • I subscribe through Allure and have been very fortunate in not getting leaky/empty products.

        I have also gotten the Amazon box a couple of times if I wanted to get a different variant.

    • I did the same thing!! … but I had told my husband that the moisturizer felt weird. I should have followed my instinct and taken it off….but I have a newborn and I am so darn tired that I didn’t even process that it could have been something else.

      • Congrats on your newborn! I understand your feelings exactly. With a newborn, you’re in a fog. Been there, done it twice. 🙂

  23. So THAT’S why it “sudded” up on my face over serum. I thought that it was just a s***** moisturizer.

    I’ll use the rest as a cleanser and not request anything, after reading a couple of comments here from ladies that went to their website. Thank you ladies for sharing your experience!

  24. I get my box from Amazon. I just tested it, and it is indeed a cleanser. I think you should be able to tell pretty quickly while putting this on, since if you try to rub it in, it suds up instead. I filled out the form, so we’ll see what happens. They ask for your name, email, and address.

    This is a pretty big yikes. Where was quality control? I suppose I’ll keep it to use as a cleanser but someone (or many) really dropped the ball here. What about all the customers who don’t check MSA?

    • I subscribe via Amazon as well, and have requested a refund.

      • I get both of mine through Amazon, what kind of response did you get from them?

    • I got the email from Allure late this afternoon. All subscribers should get one if the sub through Allure, I would think.

      I checked and did indeed receive the moisturizer.

  25. I got the cleanser. Used the link above to request a replacement. No landing screen, just an automatic Give me your last name, without telling me what is going on, or telling me what will happen to my personal data.
    A half an ounce of moisturizer ain’t worth that.
    So, no thank you.
    And tosses tube in trash.

    • why would you toss it instead of using it?

      • If a company can’t put the right product in the right tube, who knows what else is going on? I gather that Curology makes the items to fit your skins needs. There is much room for mischief.
        I am not slamming the brand, in fact, I have heard good things about it. But I don’t need to deal with a mystery product with everything that is going on in the world right now.
        Which is why I wouldn’t feel comfortable donating it.

      • I’ve been a curology subscriber for years and I cannot day enough positive things about the products and customer service I’ve received. This indeed sounds like a major booboo but mistakes do happen and it seems they are trying to make it right and then some. For those of you concerned about the companies integrity, as I said, I have had overwhelmingly positive experiences with both products and customer service and issue resolution. Hope that is helpful for any of you wondering wtf….

    • It’s probably just a case of a company that specializes in smaller batches and not used to ramping up for someone like Allure. Since they customize your formula each shipment and each person gets their customized formula, they probably are not used to making large quantities. Probably something like Jaclyn Hill’s lipstick debacle. I actually subscribe to them and haven’t had a problem with my regular formula and have had my skin clear up really well on it. I only get the tretinoin formula now but I have used both cleanser and moisturizer without any negative effects. Of course, they were labeled correctly so I wasn’t using a cleanser on my face all day assuming it was moisturizer.

  26. I’m confused. The tube still says moisturizer but it may be cleanser? Or open the box and look at the tube to see what it says? So you might need to try it to see what it is ?

    • The tube is also mislabeled. Check by wetting hands and see if the product suds up. Mine did. I have used the cleanser before and it’s the same.

I would rather have allure the company that i am paying, send me a product. They already have all my info. I may be paranoid, but I don’t trust this blank page.

      -If a small dab of the product in the tube foams lightly when you add water, then you got the Curology cleanser. The cleanser is intended to be used morning and night to wash your face.
      -If the product does not foam with water, and absorbs into your skin, then you got the Curology Smooth Sailing moisturizer—just as the label says!

  27. Mine is labeled moisturizer. Is the package just supposed to be labeled wrong or what? I filled out the form in the link and they didn’t say I would receive anything.

  28. I did get the cleanser in the moisturizer packaging. It’s ridiculous. Both the box and the actual tube say moisturizer but it clearly suds up.

  29. I just opened mine up. Very tacky but not really sudsy. I wouldn’t want to try it as a moisturizer. The cleanser I have previously does suds up more. So maybe it is the cleanser?

  30. I’m not positive on what I got? I think it’s a cleanser but I’m not sure. It has the feel of a cleanser but doesn’t suds up much at all. People who got the cleanser does it suds up a bunch?

    • No, not very much, so it’s hard to tell. Put a little on your face as if it were moisturizer; if it’s tacky, it’s the cleanser.

      • Thank you for the reply. I am thinking I got the cleanser, when I went to test it was tacky on my hand.

    • I got the cleanser. I tested mine on dry skin on the back of my hand, and it felt very slick and wouldn’t absorb into the skin at all. I added a tad of water, and mine didn’t lather/suds up, but it did produce two little bubbles, and when I rinsed it off it most definitely felt like a cleanser. The good thing is is that it left my hand feeling super soft! Hopefully, it’ll do the same for my face too!
