We have the sample choice and curated box spoilers for the November 2018 Birchbox! (Sample choice will open on October 29th for Aces, October 30th for everyone else).

If you aren't familiar, every month, Birchbox subscribers can pick one of their samples and get surprised by the 4 other items in the box, or pick the curated box.

For November, Birchbox sent me the samples + curated box early so I can answer any questions you might have and help you make your choice!

The sample choice options are:

CHOICE 1: LOC Liquid Shimmer in Aurora - FULL SIZE! Retail Value $10

(Just a heads up - this is full size, but LOC sizes are smaller than your average size for that product, and they are priced accordingly.)

This eyeshadow formula is amazing! Intense pigment and shimmer, and it doesn't budge once it sets! (But it's still easy to remove with cleanser + water at the end of the day.) The color is a lilac pink shimmer.

Here is Marne swatching it for us:

Who I'd recommend this for: Anyone looking for easy-to-wear, bold eyeshadow looks. (This could also double as a highlighter, but it dries pretty quickly, so you will need to blend quickly, too!)

CHOICE 2: LXMI Creme du Nil - 7 ml Value $11.28

This is a lightweight formula that can be used as a day or night cream. This cream absorbed well, and it left my skin with a dewy finish. (They recommend using this before makeup, but it probably wouldn’t work well if you are going for a matte look.) The formula was gentle on my skin, and the scent was subtle and reminded me of cucumber.

Who I'd recommend this for: Anyone looking for ingredient-conscious skincare. And a little goes a long way, (I only needed a pea sized amount), so this should last at least a week.

CHOICE 3: Number 4 Jour d'automne Smoothing Balm - 1 oz Value $5.88

This is a lightweight hair balm designed to help fight frizz and protect against heat. The scent is light and lovely, too.

Who I'd recommend this for: Anyone with coarse and/or frizzy hair.

And here is the November 2018 curated box:

Here's the LOC glow squad swatched:

It's creamy, easy to blend, and you can tone down the shimmer if you need to.

Who I recommend the curated box for: In general, I always recommend the curated box if you are value-conscious. This one has a total value: $33.79. This box is a great mix of skincare, haircare, and makeup, and the brands are great.

And if you haven't tried the Mellow Cream yet - go for this box. It’s a 5-in-1 cream that can be used as a serum, priming moisturizer, eye cream, neck cream, and sleeping mask! It’s super hydrating and infused with egg yolk extract, egg white, and collagen to help firm skin. (Plus I love this type of product for travel – keeps my cosmetic bag light!)

What do you think of the spoilers for the November 2018 Birchbox? Do you have any questions about the products?

If you haven’t signed up for Birchbox yet, there's still time to sign up and get to pick your sample (or curated box) for November! Sign up by end of the day on October 24th, and you'll be able to participate in sample choice!

YMMV, but I received the LXMI moisturizer in an Ipsy bag, and I found the scent to be VERY strong and irritating – and I am not someone who is usually bothered by scents.

So question from a newbie! If I don’t choose this month, will the curated box shown be the only box available? Or will there be other combinations based on your beauty quiz?

And if you choose a single product, will your box be made up of the curated box shown in the video? Or will they choose from more items in their sample drawer?

I’m just afraid I’ve purchased a box that only has a few things to choose from! :(

If you don’t choose anything this month, Birchbox will choose for you based on your beauty quiz. And if you choose a single product, the rest of the box will be made up from a variety of samples (they typically sample over 40 items a month), so it’s unlikely that the rest of the items would mirror the curated box.

Hope that helps a bit! Let me know if you have any other questions, and hope you enjoy your first box! 🙂

I like the egg mellow, but it has alcohol in it. I read that if you use products with alcohol in it 3 consecutive times, it causes some permanent skin damage( i think I read this on beautypedia). You don’t see it now, but you will later.

The Mellow Cream has cetyl alcohol, which, like stearyl alcohol, is a fatty alcohol derived from natural sources. It is perfectly safe to use on your skin. Ethyl, isopropyl, and denatured alcohol are drying alcohols which can damage your skin. “Alcohol” just refers to a certain kind of compound molecule; not all alcohols are the same.

It has both. I know the difference. About midway down the ingredient list, after the aloe, you will see “alcohol”.

I’m not sure what I want to get. I was leaning towards the LXMI Creme as despite my backlog of samples from subs I do need facial moisturizers – however the sample size is so small I will probably pass. So I will probably get the LOC. It’s a pretty color, and I like travel sized makeup items since I do much of my makeup on the go in the car. I already got the smoothing balm in my first box.

Curated box… everything will be used 🙂

I love the LOC eye shadow! Just bought it (and the other new color, a coppery Dusk). If I hadn’t, I’d definitely pick that sample.

I’m hesitant to put something with egg on my face on purpose. Isn’t there a negative saying about that? Seriously though, does anyone know if there are skincare benefits to egg products or if it’s just a gimmick?

Everything else in the curated box is calling my name! I’ve been wanting to try air repair for a while.

I’ve heard that the egg mellow cream has an unpleasant smell. Is that true? Would not want an eggy type smell on my face.

It smells like cigarettes to me. So nasty.

I like the smell, actually. It’s almost a little sweet, not eggy at all. The texture is pretty cool too. Like a thin, workable cake batter. I don’t want any of the other samples (I already have the serum from october’s Box and I got the egg mellow cream last year) otherwise I would go curated. I really hope I get it in my box though.

I wasn’t going to pick a sample this month and just let Birchbox surprise me but now I’m going to choice LOC — the swatch was very helpful. Thank You!

Liz what do you do differently with the egg mellow cream to turn it into an overnight mask versus using it as a nighttime moisturizer ?

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Basically, the difference is how much you apply. For a nighttime moisturizer, I’d apply a small amount that would absorb completely. For a nighttime mask, I’d apply a thick layer before bed.

Hope that helps! 🙂

Thank you for giving this information. Really helps. I’m going for the curated box.

So glad to hear it is helpful! 🙂
