I was just reading the comments here, and since I’ve been doing the some of the WSET (wine) certifications as well as recently signed up to receive the Vinebox quarterly subscription, I thought I’d chime in and address some of the questions or comments–I am not advocating for anyone to purchase this advent Vinebox. I agree it’s not for everyone, and although I’ve signed up for the quarterly subscription, I don’t see myself ordering this.
Anyway, a sommelier at Vinebox selects the wines, which are from real European wineries. Many wine clubs and subscription boxes are indeed bulk wine clearinghouses or private label wines (large amounts of pre-made wine is purchased by the club, which then creates a label; you don’t actually ever know who made the wine) and are therefore hit or miss. I am thinking from my research that the regular Vinebox wines are in the mid-range of quality (I haven’t gotten my first box yet). The box that’s being sent to me includes a vertical tasting (same wine from the same winery from three different years so you can compare) of a Bordeaux, which leads me to having some faith in the selections of Vinebox’s somm.
The Vinebox mini bottles of wine are 10cl, which is 3.3oz, so yes, not a a full pour, but I think the point of Vinebox is to taste the wine so you can decide to purchase and/or learn about types of wines. When doing a tasting, WSET recommends 5cl pours–first you assess by sight the color, clarity, and intensity, so it’s important to asses that on a set amount of wine in the glass. A full standard pour is too much. I could envision inviting a friend over to practice wine tasting and split each 10cl bottle.
I see the Vinebox subscription as assisting with my education, a great way to try and compare lots of European wines. If I were to buy all these by the bottle, I’d be spending a lot more and possibly have nearly a full bottle of something I don’t care to finish…
