Boxycharm Overview and Tutorial – June 2018

BoxyCharm is a popular full-size beauty and makeup subscription box. (Check out our full review of the May 2018 Boxycharm box to learn more about each of the items this month.)

Today, I’ll be showing you how I used some of the items in my June BoxyCharm box! I’d love if you shared what products and techniques worked for you in the comments as well! What items were your favorites? Which products have you been reaching for all month? Let’s talk about all things June BoxyCharm.

But first, here are the box basics:

In June’s box, I received the following:

Last month had a more simple box with some pretty great things, but this month we are back in color! I like the creative theme of “Caribbean Queen” and how one of my favorite YouTubers Kathleen Lights is included this month. I am in love with the eyeshadow pallet and with all this color, there is no way I was going to play it safe! This month we’re stepping outside the box! Since we received so many great things this month I have a lot to discuss and how it did or did not work for me, so let’s get started!

Since I was unsure about our first product I decided to do a little research and mostly what I saw was very positive. This product is designed to tighten and smooth the look of skin. Its made for the bum & other body parts. It also contains caffeine and other unique ingredients that make this product so exciting to try.  I took a dime-sized amount of the Brazilian Bum Bum Cream and rubbed it on my thighs and legs. It’s super hot & humid in the great state of Texas and a great day for a pair of shorts. So let’s see if this popular cream lives up to its name. First, It smells simply amazing! It’s thick and slightly whipped texture makes it a treat to use. I smell a lovely mix of bananas & coconuts. A very pleasant smell that lingers in the air well after you put it on! As far as my skin tightness and firmness, well I guess I have to try it more than once in order to give you a proper review. So far the smell alone will have me coming back for more!

As usual, I began with a bare face.

Then, I added Primer, concealer and filled in my brows. I always allow my Primer to settle into my skin for at least ten minutes before adding foundation.

This is my first time hearing of the Alamar cosmetic brand. So I’m very interested to see how these shades blend and if the pigment is as bright and creamy as it looks. Even though there are three different volumes with this palette, BoxyCharm decided to feature volume 1 – the Reina Del Caribe palette. The name Alamar means “stay close to the sea” and that’s how the names of these shades were chosen. This bright yellow packaging screams summertime! Inside there are four very colorful matte shades and four even more colorful metallic/shimmer shades. You will see that there is either a water drop or a small sun symbol next to the shadow names. This lets you know which shades to use with a wet brush and which ones to use dry. This is very helpful and in fact, the first time I’ve ever seen this. I was so intrigued with this Cuba-inspired palette that I decided to look up the names and their translation. I will have them in parentheses for you below. This palette looks very intimidating but I refuse to let that sway me and decided to go bold!

To begin I took a wet flat brush and went into the color “El Malecon” (seafront). I’m using my Make It Last Setting Spray by Milani Cosmetics to wet my brush but you can use water or whatever you have. This color is a slight light green/silver color and I plan on packing my entire lid with it. Right away I love how the color comes to life against my skin tone. I decided not to use a transition color with this look because the colors are so bold, they really don’t need any help. Lol

As you can see there is some fallout but not too much, however, I still suggest doing your eye make first so you won’t disturb your foundation. I cleaned the fall out after finishing my entire eye look.

Before moving on to the next color, I used a dry fluffy brush to soften the edges a bit.

Next, I took a more fluffy wet brush and went into the color, “Celia” (Latin name). I choose this color to match the teal color blouse I am wearing.

I swiped this color along my crease bringing it slightly higher so you can’t miss this beautiful sea aqua color. Next, I blended the two colors with a smaller dry fluffy brush, just to soften the edges a bit. Here are the two colors together.  FYI – these colors are very bright and metallic even when using a light hand.

Under my brow bone, I took a tiny wet brush and added the color “La Costa” (coast or shore). Using a light hand, I blended this gorgeous light pink color under my brow bone and also the inner corners of my eyes, highlighting the area. Here is how my eyes look so far. I know it looks a bit of a mess right now but hang in there with me.

To finish up my eye look I took the color “cafecito” (black coffee) and with a dry medium fluffy brush added this to the outer corners of my eye so that all three colors mesh and blend outward. The colors are super blendable, some of the most blendable eyeshadows I have ever used. I usually always like adding a darker shade to the outer part of my eye look. I like to think it sort of completes my look giving it a nice fade outward. After that, I took a clean dry fluffy brush and blended out any harsh lines. I wanted a bold colorful look without looking like a clown. The key to getting these bold colors to work together is to blend blend blend! Then I applied a black eyeliner to my waterline and one thin coat of mascara. I used the thin coat of mascara to prep my eyes for our next product:

When I saw we were getting a pair of luxurious lashes from Battington Monroe, I was very excited. I have not treated myself to a decent pair of lashes in months. Thank you, BoxyCharm!

When the thin coat of mascara dried, I took my eyelash curler and curled my natural lashes. Applying a thin coat of mascara on before applying false lashes helps to blend your natural lashes into the false lashes more realistically. Basically, it helps fuse the two together for a more natural look. I used a pair of tweezers to hold the lashes in place as I placed the glue on the lash band. Allowing it to dry and become tacky is very important before adding it to your eyes. Here is my eye look fully complete. These lashes are so lightweight and comfortable, I’m in love with the outcome.

After cleaning up minimal fallout, I added my foundation and powder with the Luxie Rose Gold Precision Foundation 660 brush and I can absolutely say I love love (did I say love?) Luxie brushes so much. They are super soft and very good quality. I have received so many Luxie brushes from BoxyCharm that I have built a nice collection of soft pink rose gold brushes, just like these. My powder went on seamlessly.

Now it’s time to highlight and this time, I’m not holding back! I took the Luxie Rose Gold Tapered Highlighting Face Brush 522 and used the color “La Costa” from our Eyeshadow palette and placed a generous amount of highlight to my cheekbones and the tip of my nose. Here is how my makeup looks after adding a gorgeous amount of highlight. I think this Eyeshadow shade performed wonderfully as a highlight. Do you guys agree?

Then I used our last Luxie Brush, the Duo Fiber Powder Brush 516 to apply my translucent setting powder. All three of the brushes worked absolutely great which is no surprise to me. All of my Luxie Brush products have all worked amazingly.

Finally, time to finalize this look. I have tried many liquid lips from Ofra Cosmetics before and I absolutely love the formula. It doesn’t make your lips feel like the Sahara Desert once it dries down like a lot of liquid lips tend to do. I got the color “Verona” and to be upfront and honest, I don’t like how it goes with the look I created. After two coats of the liquid lip, I used our last item from this month’s box – the Jonteblu eyeliner pencil in 903 Dark Brown. After my matte lip dried down, I lined my lips with the eyeliner and then I took my finger and picked up the same highlight color and dabbed it onto my lips giving it a soft glow.

I have to be honest, I wasn’t too thrilled with the lip color I received, I feel like it just washes my entire look out. However, I wanted to use everything we got this month. Not sure if this lip combo will work for too many people but I hope you guys enjoyed the process.

Quick Tip: No matter what brand of liquid lip you choose to use whether it has a good formula or not, I always suggest hydrating your lips beforehand. Coconut oil or even a nice chapstick will also do the trick to hydrate your lips while helping your liquid lip go on better and last longer. Not to mention be more comfortable throughout the day.

Verdict: I thought this month was such a fun and interesting box. From the Bum Bum Brazilian cream to my favorite brushes, I really enjoyed trying out all these great products. I’d love to know how you felt about the colorful shades in this month’s Alamar Cosmetics makeup palette. Did the color selection scare you or did you jump right into creating your unique eye look? Let me know in the comments!

I am addicted to subscription boxes for so many reasons. For one I simply love the element of surprise that each month brings, whether its beauty, skin care or anything else. I love the opportunity of trying out new products every month without having to commit to the full purchase. My favorite boxes are Boxycharm, Popsugar, and any Mommy and baby boxes. I am a brand new mother and I love trying out new things for my baby and I love how they always have something special for mommy!

  1. First off in the words of Yaco and Waco Warner “ hello nurse”, your absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you so much for Sharing your look and tips.

I love this new carribian palette, The colors are amaze balls.

Unfortunately I have to gift the OFRA lippie cuz I can’t pull off the shade Verona. But the rest of the June box is a hit.

    • Lol ok first of all I feel sooooo left behind because my husband had to tell me what that reference meant Lol a cartoon show lol wow! Thanks

  2. Oooh you are gorgeous!! There are such pretty ladies on this site to do reviews and model for us that it’s neat to see how different we can be, and how we can make the same things beautiful!!

I loved loved loved the luxie brushes!!! I like getting large face brushes…holding out hope for a huge kabookie one soon. Haha

The palette was so pretty and smooth.

The other eyelashes from boxy last year were better for me, but I’m just learning so it could be used error. Haha

I didn’t like the ofra lipstick. It don’t stay well on me, and it fades and leaves a ring after 20 minutes of wearing…and I got another mud brown. So it’s a no go.

    • Thanks!

  3. Desiree thanks I really love the bright eyes with the nude lip it makes your eyes pop lovely !!

    • 😁😁😁😁😁😘😘😘😘😘

    • I agree. I like that light-skinned nude lip too. I got the Ofra too and love it. I’ve been pairing it with a darker lip pencil. Try it!

  4. Thank you so much, Desiree! I love how you used the gold and teal shadows together, I will try that. I love your natural lip color; with that eye look I’d use just a clear lip.

Question 1 (for anyone): when you use a lip balm or whatever under a liquid lippie, how long should you wait between putting on the balm and putting on the liquid?

Question 2 (also for anyone): how can you tell which shadows (on any palette or singles) can be used wet? I see that the non-matte shadows on this palette (the upper half) have a little water drop next to their name, and the mattes (bottom half) have a little sun. I thought this was marking cool and warm shades — except that the gold and the light pink aren’t cool shades. So I guess with most shadows it’s trial and error?

I didn’t mind having to miss Boxycharm this month (budget woes), but after seeing Liz’s review, I NEEDED the Alamar palette for the incredible pigment of the gold and dark blue, so I swapped for it and I’m so happy I did! I have no clue what to do with red/orange eyeshadows, and I have a gazillion golds and teals, but none with pigment like these.

Reviews help me so much, they make a huge difference in knowing what I might like.

    • Question 1: if you choose something light like chapstick , you dont have to wait. I wouldn’t overdue the chapstick just a nice thin layer.
Question 2 : the water symbol are the shades you use a slightly wet brush & sun symbols mean to use a dry brush. If you dont think the red or orange colors will work alone then try mixing them with another shade. This can sort of tame the color down so it wont stand out to bright or harsh. Hope this makes since lol

    • Shimmer shades can be used wet. Matte shades aren’t great when wet, I wouldn’t recommend wetting them. Anything with glitter is a shimmer you can use water or a setting spray to put it on if you want it to stand out a little more. Kinda intensifies the colors. I’m not sure about the using a lip balm. I would think it would need some time to soak into your lips so you can apply your lipstick. How much time I do!’t know. Especially when using a matte lipstick it’s joce to have your lips moist so they don’t dry out so much. I tend to use chapstick every day to make sure they stay hydrated.

    • I tend to use chapstick before bedtime and throughout the day, and before I put on my lippie, I use Clinique’s All About Lips. I let it dry, and it exfoliates and moisturizes all day.

  5. Thank you for this tutorial/overview. This has been the first boxycharm box that I received where I have/will use everything. The colors in the alamar palette really allows you to challenge and/or step out of your comfort zone without looking crazy. I like the look that was put together in this tutorial. Keep them coming.

    • Awesome, I will do my best !

  6. I just read the whole tutorial and usually don’t have the patience for such things. I really enjoy your reviews every time. I don’t even wear makeup (I’m in these boxes for the skincare) but you have me wanting to try more adventurous looks!

    • Yes! Dont be scared to try different colors.

  7. You are gorgeous and this is a great tutorial.

    • 🤗🤗

  8. Excellent review and loved how much detail went into the tutorial. Definitely can’t wait to see more reviews from you!

    • Awe thanks that makes me feel good!

    • Thanks you for the encouragement, means alot!

  9. Wow!!! You look amazing! That eye look is to die for, thank you so much for sharing!

  10. It was such a pleasure reading your tutorial! I hope that you plan to do more! I very rarely read these all the way through but I couldn’t help myself!

    • 😊 me blushing

  11. I love your tutorial, your tip about leaving the primer to set for a bit before adding foundation was great. I have been doing that and believe my makeup looks smoother. Thanks for the tip!

    • Awesome !

    • You bet! Thank you for your ccomment

  12. Your makeup looks amazing! I’m very pale and got the darkest option this month from girlactik or however you spell it. I wish I would’ve gotten the idea. I hear they will start customizing boxes next month with our reviews but we have a profile, they kinda should already be started on it imo

    • Wow really? That’s news & will sure help a tun if they did! Thanks for the update Nikkim

    • I got the girlatick in Blossom.

  13. You look gorgeous! I need to try that color again, with a wet brush. It sure didn’t POP on me like it does on you! Love reading your tutorials!

    • Thank you and Yes! Try it again

  14. Your tutorial was great and I loved the look on you, but wow, you are absolutely gorgeous without makeup!

    • 😌

  15. That eyeshadow on you is STUNNING! Love this look and the detail you provided, thank you for sharing!

    • Thank you😉

  16. I never received my box. Some how it’s still stuck on a fed ex truck. I’m so disappointed. It’s my first box I won’t receive in a couple years. Now I’ve lost all hope with my love for boxy as they told me once it leaves it’s out of their hands. 😞 I think I’ll take a break now from all boxes. Saddest day for me.

    • Awwww I’m so sorry hun, but don’t give up! That’s your box and you paid for it so stay on top of the matter. I would keep contacting them and remind them that you have been a member for a while now.

    • That’s not right. If its been 10 business days since your box shipped, email them again. They allow for one replacement box, per year, I believe. They will be able to check the tracking and see what happened.

    • Have you called FedEx and USPS with your tracking number? If not, do so. It’s up to them to locate it! FedEx is the first carrier, then they pass it off to USPS for actual delivery, because shipping is cheaper that way. Definitely call them and stay on them!!!

      • Mine just came today, so don’t lose hope yet. There have been a couple months in which my box didn’t arrive until the 28th!

    • Hi Bella01
A little FYI for you that I found in BoxyCharm’s FAQ’s…..What I know to be 💯 accurate, because it happened to me also a couple of months ago…BoxyCharm WILL replace one missing box a yr!!!
So if you end up not receiving your June box,go ahead and contact them through their official BoxyCharm website. It will say contact BoxyCharm I know for sure,at the bottom of the FAQ page.
I hope this helps and I’m keeping my fingers 🤞🤞that you’ll get your June Box soon❣️❣️❣️

    • Aww that’s sad that your box is lost. I’m surprised they told you it was out of their hands because several months ago boxy emailed me saying it looked like my box was lost in delivery so they mailed a new one out. I was waiting patiently and they emailed me first. Try messaging again. This doesn’t seem the norm with boxy. Hope you get your box soon.

  17. I agree with SunnyT. The nude lip color looks good with the eye look. Maybe a different shade of lip liner but everything looks nice!

    • Yes , maybe I should have tried another liner, thanks!

  18. I felt the lipstick shade was pretty ugly on me and thought it was a bad addition to this bright and festive box. I love the palette though and have been making several fun looks with it.

    • I wish we could share pics because this was a very different shade range and I would love to see what everyone came up with!

    • Hi Katy…
You and everyone else agrees that BoxyCharm has been sending us horrendous (yes I sure did mean to use that word,it’s that bad and the subscribers have mentioned it over and over on their Instagram acct)shades of lip products. The brands are amazing it’s just the brown shades….I mean, come on BC during the Spring and Summer we want pinks, bright colors, peaches….JUST NOT BROWN MATTES OR BROWN FROSTS…..PLEASE

  19. Desiree, thank you for a lovely tutorial! I really enjoyed reading it. Your writing ‘voice’ is kind, fun, and appealing. I look forward to more posts!!

    • Thank you soooo much!

  20. Those eyeshadows totally pop on you! This look feels ready for a tropical vacation. Super sunny and cute.

    • I feel you and I’m ready for that ticket to Hawaii! LOL

  21. Honestly I mas a little bit scared of it, but after seeing this I’m gonna try it out. This looks amazing on your skin color!!

    • Thanks!

  22. Thank you for this! I am just learning to use eyeshadow. Actually, my teenage daughter is teaching me. I love the pallette and wanted to use it. Your step by step is awesome and so helpful to me. Thank you! I do think they tried to do a liquid lip that would work for everyone and, in do ou ng so, did one that works for none – although my daughter is eyeing mine! You look beautiful! Thanks for sharing this!

    • Thank you! That is so sweet that your daughter is helping you, really brought a smile to my face.

    • Desiree hello sweetness…..😍😍
I am a product tester/reviewer and let me just say….this is one of the BEST written reviews/tutorials I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading!
You were so specific as you went over each product’s description in great detail and did an even better job at explaining each step you took in the application of the products.
Desiree…You’re gorgeous 💣💥definitely have mastered the art of reviewing and of course superb at makeup application….please keep the reviews coming 💞🌹🙌🙌🏆💕😇 💐

      • Thank you soooo much, you don’t know what that means to me !!!!! 😍

  23. GORGEOUS! Great review!

    • ☺️

  24. The Alamar cosmetics line was just launched by a boxy employee and makeup artist, Gabby. There aren’t 3 volumes of the palette that is the only one she has released so far.

    • Really? Thanks for the info

  25. I think Verona looks great on you! It looked like chocolate pudding on my lips! Much too dark for my light complexion. It was the one disappointment in my box. Love the final look on you!

    • Thanks a lot!

  26. What a thoughtful and AMAZING review and tutorial! I was waiting and hoping to see if it was worth keeping the Verona lippie. It’s not.
Once again, great review and love the final look.

    • Thanks!

  27. I enjoyed this tutorial I liked the tips and alternate options tried with the products.

I never seem to be able to get lashes to stay on – after seeing how surprisingly subtle these Battington ones look on, I have to try lashes again with these tricks and possibly an online tutorial. Especially since I just bought new glue, and have 2 more sets of these lashes in my collection [from the old People’s The Voice box].

I was prepared to HATE the eye palette – I am so fair-skinned, that blues, greens, and oranges look horrid on me, but I found the color payoff is pretty nice, and after swatching, I want to try to work these colors in to an occasional sunny look I’ll try to sport without blending and covering up too much with lighter shades.

I too love luxie (I get tons from ipsy too) and Ofra liquid lippies – Verona was on my list to buy, but what I often find with Ofra is the swatches (although they upgraded all their site swatches last year to show swatches on multiple skin tones – a huge improvement) really differ from how their stuff looks in true light on me. Verona was dark on me, but a bit more rusty-tan colored than the what had appeared online to be a mocha greigish taupe.
…Sigh though I love getting Ofra in boxes, I just wish the colors I’ve gotten were more in the wheelhouse of what looks good on me.

I’m particularly into Milani and MUA’s metallic liquid lipsticks, and layering those over other matte colors. Hoping boxy sends us some metallic liquid lipsticks soon!!!

    • I agree. Sometimes shades look so diffrent in the tube than on your lips!!!! Just continue to play around and maybe add another color in the center of your lips. Blot it and see how that turns out. I can’t tell you how many times I was so close to throwing a color out but then mixed it with another color and found out it was a keeper after all.

  28. What an awesome post! I love the step-by-step guide. More of these, please!

    • 🤗🤗🤗🤗

  29. Great tips and look! The lashes look amazing on you!

I see that the lashes can be re used many times. How exactly does that work? Do you wash them? I’ve never re used lashes before! Sorry if that’s a stupid question 🤣🤣

    • I agree – great review. What adhesive did you use to put on the lashes – I’ve never tried falsies before and would like to know where I can get adhesive. Thank you!

      • Thanks and I really like the one from DUO it drys pretty quick and easy to clean off if you want to reuse them. I get mines from Ulta Beauty

      • I got lash glue from Walmart. They are normally near the makeup brushes. I purchased the Kiss strip adhesive clear. And it’s a brush on glue. I thought i purchased the Duo brand 🤣 it seems the brush on formula works much better than the tube ones in my opinion. 💖💖

    • No no that’s not a dumb question at all. Although I really only use lashes for special occasions , I have reused them before. I think it depends on the lashes themselves. Some have longer life spans than others. But to awnser your question Amy, I’m sure there are many ways to clean them, however here is how I reuse them:

. Dip the used lashes in warm & soapy water
.Gently Pick apart the glue ( sometimes I use a q tip)
. Rinse them in warm water
. Blot them dry and put them back in their box
Like I said there’s many diffrent ways, but hope this helps

      • That does help a lot! Dezi! I will do those steps to re use the lashes. Thank you so much

  30. You look gorgeous! I actually think the nude lip works great with the more dramatic eye. Thanks for sharing this, I am looking forward to receiving my first boxycharm!

    • Thanks and I really do enjoy Boxycharm , I don’t think you will be disappointed .

  31. The smell is actually supposed to be caramel pistachio. 🙂 I agree, it is divine!

    • Oh really? lol I was way off lol It smells soooooo good!

  32. Wow, stunning look! I agree the lipstick washes it out a bit. That palette looks amazing, I’m regretting not getting the box now. 🙂

    • You can still get it! I did =)

    • Yes I really don’t like this color, I’ve tried many things to make it work. No luck
