I also decided to grab the Color Tool Kit too!

What do you think of The Customer Color Box? Have you tried eSalon hair coloring products before? I recently went from blonde highlights to dark brown hair, and now I'm thinking of adding a little dark red to the mix. (This is the first time I will be dying my hair at home* so I'll have an interesting review!)

*First time if you don't count me spraying my hair with Sun-In when I was in middle school and pretty much turning it orange!

I ordered some color and the color tool kit on Thursday morning (late morning), and shortly thereafter I got an e-mail asking if I could confirm that I had “virgin” hair (it’s been 3.5 years since I last colored, so all colored hair is long gone).

The next day I got an e-mail saying that based on my profile and the two pictures I uploaded (one of which was my professional headshot for our website, so good lighting and all that), they felt that the color I chose might be too dark. That’s weird for me to hear because my hair is so dark to begin with, but I was given the choice between going with what I chose or letting them tweak it. Because they know what they’re doing, I’m going with their change-up. I doubt it’ll be a huge departure from what I chose, especially because I did include notes that I was looking for a warmer color rather than a cooler one and was not trying to go super light (or what would be super light for a dark brunette).

My color shipped Friday evening, and the tracking number I woke up to on Saturday morning says that it should be arriving Monday via USPS. Now I did pay the extra $2 to give my order priority, but I have to say that I didn’t expect it that quickly. Hopefully I’ll have time to color my hair on Monday night!

I have to buy three boxes of dye when I buy from the store (I have very long, thick, curly hair). Are their bottles the same size as the store bought ones?

They ask you a bunch of questions, including ones about length, texture, and how easily your hair takes color, so my assumption is that they would compensate.

It’s really great stuff. I alternate between doing it myself with salon products and having it done and they seriously almost nailed what we use in salon/I use at home. They were like a half shade light on the first try. I was REALLY impressed. I had the gloss included in my first go and that was also fantastic. (It’s basically the color mixed with water but it works well.) Pricewise even without a discount it is still really reasonable.

Ooh Liz that hair colors sounds amazing. Will you post pictures?

Two questions:

(1) Do they ask you about grey coverage needs? I have random ones here and there, and I’ve found that at-home color is either awesome or horrible at covering greys. (Surprisingly, Revlon Colorsilk, which is super cheap, seems to work best for me and my sister, but it’s kind of one-dimensional. What do you want for $4?)

(2) What are the frequencies they permit, and/or can you skip shipments? My hair is dark brown, so I can’t stray too far from that without seeing a professional, but that also means that I don’t need to color *that* often.

The discount on the color tool kit looks like a pretty good value, though!

Thanks!

They do ask what percent of grey you have….I unfortunately have quiet a few greys and the coverage is great, no fading like with store bought colors.
I only purchase when I am ready to color, they have different options available as to how often you want the color sent, but I only color every 2-3 months. They send reminder emails, not too many though, and when I’m ready I just login and order it. Shipping is really fast too.
Hope this helps 🙂

Thanks again – I will be ordering 😀

Rebecca

That is helpful! Thank you!

I have used this service three times now and LOVE it. The color is high quality, the color they chose for me is just right and I have saved so much money over getting my hair colored in a salon – which I did regularly for about 15 years before my stylist nearly doubled the price and I got an e-mail from eSalon on the same day 🙂

I’ve used eSalon twice now and I love the results I get. I recommend emailing a recent picture of yourself so their team can adjust the color to fit your skin tone. I did this and they adjusted my color but let me know and asked if I would want to try their color instead of what I picked. I did and the color is beautiful, I get lots of compliments all the time. I’m hooked on this product and I also got the color tool kit with my first order, it comes in very handy. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Oh, memories! 🙂

You are brave, Liz. I’ll be interested to see how this turns out.

Definitely brave. I once ruined the decor in a bathroom and also ruined a bunch of towels in an attempt to dye my hair at home. But I had very long hair and I was dyeing it completely black. And I was also about 16 at the time. Now I let the ladies at the Ulta salon take care of that and everything is good.

Haha! I decided that since I’m no longer doing highlights, I probably can handle dying my hair all one color? We’ll see!
