Sorry I’m so late in replying!
I got a julep lip gloss sample, alterna heat protection spray, Versace perfume sample, la neige mask sample, John Frieda volume spray sample, and avene eau thermale sample.
I emailed them two more times and got a refund.
I’ll use the alterna but none of the rest makes this worth $18 to me. Like seriously it’s half the price of a popsugar box for a John Frieda sample and julep lip gloss sample? lol
Glad they refunded but I will just buy too faced next time and won’t order from them again. Birchbox has much better CS.
They didn’t really explain it but just said “we apologize for sending you random samples.” I ordered on 5/21 fwiw–it’d be surprising if they were literally out of everything on that date.
Mary
L, Did they require you send the box back to them for the refund? That’s what they’re doing for me with my duplicate boxes.
L
They didn’t make me return the box, which was good. But they also didn’t send me what I ordered at all, and I kept pushing back. So that might be why they left me alone about it.

Just a note that I ordered box 1 and received zero of the items/brands pictured. I emailed them to mention this and got the standard “sorry can’t do anything about it; we can’t guarantee you’ll get the products listed” snotty reply.
But I received totally different brands from the ones listed (julep lip gloss, Versace perfume, etc…). I emailed them a screen grab of the brands I was supposed to receive. Nothing in response. It’s too bad bc if I liked the box I’d have ordered more from them. No way.

I just received Box 2 yesterday, and fortunately I got everything that was pictured. I wonder if they just start grabbing things that are “sort of” like what was originally promised once they run out of products. I went online to check, and the boxes are still listed on their site for sale. This leads me to think my theory is possible.
Heather
I hate to hear that! I would have been miserable if that happened. I received my boxes yesterday and both were exactly as described – down to the color of the items. I was very happy with both boxes. I’m so sorry you had such a bad box. I wonder what happened? I didn’t see any of those items listed either. Do you think you accidentally ordered a mystery box?
Mary
Yeah, that’s what I cautioned about a few posts below. The picture on the website showed those items same as Liz’s pic above but it had a disclaimer about the actual items you’ll receive being “one of the brands” listed. That got my radar up that perhaps it wouldn’t be exactly like the box pictured.
I got Box 2 today and it did contain exactly what was pictured. I did some sleuthing and discovered Box 2 is the July 2014 box with two extra samples (Lorac primer and Kate Somerville oil). I get Box 1 tomorrow so I’ll report back what I got. I mainly ordered it for the Too Faced Melted lippie and BB mascara, but I don’t care if I get the shampoo, Ciate polish, hair ties or Estee Lauder dark spot cream (it doesn’t work on me). I thought the value was really good for Box 2. What did you get in Box 1 that you were unhappy about (or was it more that you didn’t get what was pictured)? I’ve ordered a lot of Sample Society’s mystery boxes and I’m almost always satisfied with them. I’m sorry your experience was different.

Well, the 2nd shipment arrived today and not only didn’t I get Box 1, they sent me another Box 2 (got that already yesterday). lol I can’t complain too much, cuz I immediately gave away that Laura Mercier highlighter to a friend and regretted it after I read stellar reviews, so it was nice to get a 2nd one to try out. I can always use more face oil serum and hair masks. The only thing I don’t need is the L’Oreal mauve lip gloss (I have 3 now) and the RGB nail polish (also have 3 now). So my quest for a sub box that actually gives me a Too Faced Melted continues…. Maybe I should take the hint and just buy one from TF directly? No, that wouldn’t be any fun! 😀

I didn’t see one that had Versace parfum or Julep lip gloss in it? Which box was it? What were all the items you thought you’d receive? And what did you receive?
MaryP
What!?! The website specifically states it will be 7 samples from the listed brands. I’ve been waiting to hear back from those that ordered before ordering it myself. Thanks for your feedback. Did you at least like what they sent? If you don’t mind, will you list the 7 items you received?
Heather
If I had to choose between boxes I would definitely have chosen box 2. I, however, decided to order both. Too Faced Melted is crazy amazing, I own several and have swatched every color in Sephora. I could not pass up a chance to get Melted Peony and the Bobbi Brown mascara in box 1.
Box 2 has L’Oreal’s Mauve lipgloss and it is amazing I went through my other so quickly this was a great opportunity to replace it. Laura Mercier is my holy grail for foundation and powder. I jumped at the opportunity to have a matte pressed powder for on the go. Lorac Porefessional…amazing and I would love to have a travel size.
I’m so excited for my boxes to arrive!
Mary
You know, after reading your post, I caved and bought Box 1 too (already ordered #2 yesterday). I have always wanted to try Too Faced’s Melted line, and Peony looks like a great color to start with. Plus the Bobbi Brown mascara. So yeah, I’ve got to stop coming to this site and getting tempted. Simple, right? 😉
Heather
I know wouldn’t life be so much cheaper if we could stop buying subscription boxes? But where is the fun in that?
Jessica
Thank you for the head’s up! I got both boxes plus the December box because it included a Butter London Tinted Balm that I am dying to try out (I love that brand. I own three of their cream blushes and they are awesome). It also has an Estee Lauder night cream for eyes. I’ve been on the hunt for a good night cream. I’m new to the whole subscription box thing and your site has been a wealth of knowledge and information. Thanks :)
Poppy
You might also want the September box, as it has a full-size Restorsea eye cream in it ($85 value). I’m obsessed with this product and use it every day. I bought 2 of the boxes yesterday just for they eye cream.
Jessica
OMG! I saw that and I himmed and hawed over it. I didn’t get it because I rationalized that I had already bought three boxes. Dang nabbit! I might snag this too. My poor, poor bank account. Thanks for the insight on this cream!
Jenny
Very nice Sample Society!
Sue
Thank you! I purchased both boxes and the 10-sample box. Such as deal.
jen
I bought Box 2 on Amazon a few weeks ago.
Lili
How much was it?
Mary
They’re on there right now for the same price — $18.

These look nice, but I wish Sample Society would do the mystery boxes again. Those are so much fun!
Mary
The wording on the site is tricky. These two boxes don’t specifically say that the items are the ones listed above. They say “indulge your curiosity” and say the box will contain items from the dozen or so brands listed. Soooo, I’m not sure if you’ll actually get that particular list or mystery items, but I’ll find out soon cuz I ordered Box 2. Either way, I think it’ll be a good buy. I am usually happy with Sample Society’s offerings.
Judi
Just got my package and can confirm that the samples shown are indeed what is being sent. I got Box 1 with the Melted lip gloss.
Unfortunately, the perfume sample, which is wrapped like a piece of candy, arrived smashed to smithereens, which seems odd, especially since the polish was next to it and is unharmed, and the box-within-a-box is sturdy. I’ve already e-mailed customer service w/photos. Still, very happy with this one.

Considering the first pic originally didn’t include a Tarte product let alone the newer Melted, I doubt the rerun will add it. In fact, that specific box was one of the most hated since they revamped the sub. They had advertised a larger bottle of the dark spot serum and then sent drugstore shampoo minis to make up for it. So other than the mascara and polish, the box was a bust for many if not most who originally got it. So I definitely wouldn’t count on seeing Melted in the “here’s all we have left” box.
Lisa Marie
Ur welcome 😉 thanks for everything!!! Love this site
