Nerd Block Subscription Box Review – August 2014

Nerd Block Subscription Box Review - August

Nerd Block is a monthly subscription box for geeks and gamers. This box typically includes at least a figurine or two, and always a new exclusive shirt. Compared to Loot Crate, I’ve found that Nerd Block seems to have more figurines each month, where Loot Crate seems to have more exclusive items.

Nerd Block Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Card

Each box comes with a card detailing each of the items included.

Nerd Block Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Shirt

Pokemon Shirt – Value $18

This shirt isn’t a hit for my husband – we may swap it or gift it.

Nerd Block Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Batman

Funko Batman PX Previews Exclusive – Value $11

This month subscribers either got Batman or Harley Quinn. My husband was thrilled with this one, and I think he’s already swapped to get Harley Quinn too!

Nerd Block Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Items

New Adventures Doctor Who Comics – Value $3.99 each

These comics are NerdBlock exclusives. We’re not Doctor Who fans, but my cousin is, so these are going to him!

Bravest Warrior Keychain

Bravest Warriors Keychain – Value $7

MiniKins Mini Figures – Value $2

Verdict: This box has a value of about $46. We paid $30 for the box, so the retail value is good, but for us this month was a miss because of the characters/tv shows selected. The only item my husband loves is the Batman. We should be able to swap for some items we do like so it’s not a wash. (And we always go into these geek subscriptions knowing that it could be hit or miss depending on which items they include).

What did you think of Nerd Block this month?

  1. I subscribed to Nerd Block and then when I saw that my bank account was charged $29.50, I started investigating it. They charge $9.99 for S&H!!!! No way!!!! I have sent them an email since my account is still showing “processing.” I hope they cancel it in time, but I got an email stating I canceled too late. Not sure what is going to happen, but I will not ever order from them again. Very misleading and S&H at $9.99 is robbery. Oh if you get 40 dollars worth of stuff, the price is 20 bucks, plus 10 shipping and get 40 dollars worth for 30. Would be a great deal, but not when it is luck of the draw to see if you even like one thing in the box!!!!!

  2. I just want people from Canada to know that although Nerd Block’s warehouse is based in Canada, you are being charged USD for the box. I just subscribed to the box and after shipping, tax, and exchange rate, I am paying $36 CAD which is almost double what is advertised. I am currently looking into Loot Crate to see if their monthly cost of $29.95 is in CAD and is a fixed cost (i.e. I won’t be charged taxes and exchange on top of that). If that’s the case, I might switch over depending on how good the Nerd Block is this month. The September Loot Crate is sounding pretty damn good (8 items!!!) so I might subscribe for a month to that and then cancel.

    • Be careful. Loot Crate has really horrible customer service. I did not receive my first crate, and they cancelled my account when I refused to pay a second time.

      • Actually their customer service was really good with me. When I thought my crate hadn’t shipped, I emailed them and they gave me a link with my confirmation number, as well as the date it was shipped. I think their customer service may just be hit or miss.

  3. The T-shirts are around $10 in value.

  4. The last two months of Nerd Block have been a disappointment to say the least. Comic-Con in a box has turned into a shirt from their parent company and some left over items from a hot-topic or Toy R Us discount bin. Most of the items the last few months have been older items I have seen on sale for some time now. I think I will be sticking with Loot Crate from now on, for $10.00 less the at least get some up to date exclusives, not two year old Comic Con DVD’s or “exclusive” Pop Vinyls any comic shop can order from the Previews catalog. Maybe Nerd Block has spread itself to thin with it’s multiple blocks with minor differences, or they just don’t care now that they have been around for a year.
Maybe the new My Geeky Goodies will stay strong after it’s first month or two.

  5. Are the tshirt true to size? Same with Lootcrate. Are their tshirt a true to size?

    • Melody, go for one size up with these shirts, than shrink after the first washing.

  6. Where do you swap items at? I have a few I wouldn’t mind letting go including the pokemon shirt.

    • There is a swap tab on this page.

  7. I was never a big Pokemon fan but I will still wear the shirt. I am going to alter it though. I got Harley Quinn. I wish I had gotten Batman. I gave the Minikins to my 7 year old. She loved that stuff.

  8. OMG CAT BUG!! Have you not SEEN Catbug?! XD The cutest animated critter to ever exist!

  9. I wasn’t really excited about this box; I think that started with seeing the products listed on the outside of the box. I understand it’s a customs thing, but I still was disappointed. Pokemon seems a little young, but I suppose teenagers subscribe to this as well as adults. I had never heard of the Bravest Warriors before (and neither had my husband), but my stepkids had. We did get Harley Quinn though; Michelle, I’m interested in knowing what you would swap for.

    • Haha, I’m 25 and the Pokemon shirt is maybe my favorite I’ve seen in a Nerd Block so far 🙂 It might be aimed at young people, but those of us who were kids when it first hit the US are all adults now!

It would be kind of lame though to be spoiled by seeing the stuff listed on the outside of the box. Part of the fun is the opening and discovering!

      • I watched an unboxing so I knew what was coming. Pokemon was my age group but of the things I got big into that wasn’t one. But I still like the shirt.

  10. I should have bought this month’s box if only for that shirt! I’m almost 30 and have been a fan of pokemon since I was 10. I may have to look in to getting Nerd Block soon. I’m eagerly awaiting my horror block, though!!

  11. Liz, I will happily swap you for the Pokemon shirt. My son would love us both forever! I may have to subscribe to this box just for him.

  12. I ordered this because of the Batman/Pokemon theme for the boys which worked out for my older son, but not my younger because the Pokemon item is the shirt. Now my older son is in love with POP figures. I told him he needs to pick one box for the following month. He got spoiled this month with Pop figures from Nerd Block and LC. The only thing that he did not like is the Dr. Who comics although I did warn him that it is featured often in Nerd Block.

  13. I need the Harley Quinn so very badly, so if anyone wants to swap, look for me on the swap side!! I’ll swap generously for her. 😉
