Sample Society Subscription Box Review – February 2014

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - February 2014 Box

Sample Society is a monthly beauty subscription from BeautyBar.com and Allure Magazine. Typically the brands they include are high end, and the sample sizes are generous. I recommend this box for anyone who is looking for a skincare beauty sample box with the occasional hair or makeup item.

There are usually 7 variations or so of each month’s box. For reference I got the Kit C box.(You can find the Kit letter under your order history).

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - February 2014 Beauty Samples

The Subscription Box: Sample Society

The Cost: $15 a month

The Products: Deluxe and full-size beauty and makeup samples. (Each month you also get a $15 off $50 to use on any order containing a product from any of the brands in your box).

Check out all of my Sample Society reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - February 2014 Mini Mag

In previous boxes Sample Society included a card detailing each item included. This month they let us know that we'd be getting an email about our box samples moving forward. (You still get the mini-mag though! Does anyone read it?)

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - February 2014 Alterna

Alterna 48-Hour Sustainable Volume Spray - .85 oz Value $5

Ahava Dead Sea Osmoter Concentrate - .17 oz Value $10

Thanks to subscription boxes, I've discovered my new favorite haircare line - Alterna! It's an eco-friendly line that is free of parabens, phthalates, and other potentially harmful ingredients. Plus all their haircare products smell great. Needless to say, I'm happy to get another Alterna hairspray!

ASample Society Subscription Box Review - February 2014 Ahava

Ahava Deadsea Water Mineral Body Lotion - 1.3 oz (Travel Size) Value $8

Phyto Ultra-repairing Mask - 1.7 oz Value $10

This hair mask gets mixed reviews on Sephora, but I like the Phyto brand, so I think I'll still give it a try, but maybe not leave it in overnight.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - February 2014 Murad

Murad Advanced Active Radiance Serum - .17 oz Value $15

One of my frustrations with subscription samples is when they are too small for you to even be able to try the product. With skincare products, I'm always happy when a product will last at least 2 weeks so you can see if there are any results. I think this Murad sample should last me a few weeks, and it gets great reviews, so I'm pleased with this sample!

Verdict: I paid $15 for this box and received nearly $50 worth of products. I'm really happy that I didn't get any perfume samples this month, but I would have liked to see at least one makeup product. I think I'll use everything in the box though, so it's a definite win!

Which Sample Society box did you get this month?

I received Kit C:
Butter London Nail Lacquer British Racing Green (Polish)
Diptyque L’Eau Du 34 Blvd Saint Germain SS Deluxe (Perfume)
Minus 417 Hand Moisturizer Deluxe Sample
Radical Skincare Age-Defying Exfoliating Pads
IPKN New York IPKN Moist & Firm BB SPF 02 Light

They seriously send me a full size Butter London product every time. I am getting so sick of that. I have Julep Maven as a subscription box, so I feel a little like it is redundant.

Do they have any promos or coupon codes available? I’d like to try this sub

I’ve never seen a discount for Sample Society. sorry!

Are most months this skin care heavy? Do they ever include cosmetics?

I’ve only been a member for 4 months, but I feel like I can confidently say if you are looking for more makeup, then SS isn’t for you. I think I’ve had 3 makeup samples out of 4 boxes (roughly 20 items). Those were a Jane Iredale mascara primer, a Jane Iredale lip balm, and a Jane Iredale lip/cheek tint. (Do you see a running theme haha….a GREAT brand though!) I believe some people recently received a Stila lip color though!

I agree 100% about small sample sizes – such a waste if you can’t get a real feel for the product – so this looks like a good box. Maybe a little too much hair product, but good sizes and variety.

That was a great box I was thinking of joining sample society.

I admit, this box makes me wish I hadn’t finally canceled after last month (the perfume samples every month were the death knell for me, even when I liked the scent it felt like a crappy sample) … I may have to keep my eye on it and see if this is a one time change or it moving forward.

I’ve thought about buying this box, but it looks like there is a lot of face stuff and I feel like I want to try out more new makeup products

I got Box F. I got the same Ahava body lotion, the volume spray, the hair mask, and the Murad product. I also got another Murad product. So our boxes weren’t actually that different.

I probably have too many skin care products right now, but I’m happy with the box in general and will probably at least try most of the products (may not use the volume spray but 4 out of 5 isn’t bad). The sizes of the products are great and you’re so right about having enough to try for a couple of weeks.

I’m not sure which box I got but I had the Phyto mask (very exciting), the Alterna 48 hour pump and Alterna Strand Expand creme (both thickening products which is kind of odd, but like you, I love the brand and love thick, full hair!), Dermatologica pre-cleanse oil which also has a foil sachet of their gel cleanser included in its little box–have heard good reviews about the oil!, and finally, a face tonic, by tres pure. All of my products were what I consider deluxe sizes. I was VERY impressed. I think Sample Society heard my previous complaints (small sizes, perfume…). I thought if this months box was bad I would cancel, but I mean, I’m blown away. So onto March! 🙂

I got this box as well. I am very excited about the Dermologica precleanse oil and the hair mask. I had gotten a free coupon for this box and canceled even though I was fairly happy with the box I got but I was doing the test tube subscription and didn’t think I needed all that but I re-upped it after i saw the January box and I’m glad I did. For $15 its a great box!
