Urthbox is back on MSA!  We haven't reviewed their box in a while due, but are excited to review them again.

About this box (and reviewers)

I received a Small Classic box. It contained 16 snacks, 15 of which were plant-based and one bar contained dairy.

The reviewers are:

  • Dad (D) - 50 something mostly plant-based snack lover
  • Mom (M) - 40 something year old foodie and reformed snacker
  • Teen (T) - adventurous eater

Snacks were rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

What's Inside the Urthbox?

There was no packaging material, but it was quite well packaged. Nothing was dented or smashed.

As mentioned before, there were 16 items included. Several of them were larger sized. I was surprised to find two drinks, and even more surprised to see that they were individually wrapped inside sealed plastic bags in case of spills.

The box has two of one bar, the other 14 items were single packages. There were 5 protein/snack bars, 2 savory snacks, 5 sweet snacks, 1 shake mix and one pasta, plus the 2 energy drinks.

Snacks

You Need This Cinnamon Churro Puffs, 1 oz - Estimated Retail Value $0.96

D - 7; M - 8; T - 8

Don't let the sweet title deceive you, these actually have a hint of savory in them. They are large tube-shaped crunchy sticks made from cassava, squash, and rice. The large single serve bag was a good portion size. It had good crunch and an ideal balance of salty and sweet, with a churro flavor.

M (yeah, M is me) found these HIGHLY addictive and the best of the box.

Pulse Power Chickpea Stix - Tangy BBQ, 1 oz - Estimated Retail Value $1.33

D - 7; M - 6; T - 5

These thin, shoestring-style short sticks are chickpea based. The single serving bag felt like it was on the small size. The barbecue aroma was strong when opening the bag, but the flavor was weaker than the scent.

T said that they were just "alright."

Seven Days Real Cocoa Cereal Snackies - Estimated Retail Value $0.96

D - 7; M - 5; T - 9

These flower shaped cereal bites are cassava and sunflower protein based.

T started with “I like these,” and then they are “pretty good,” and within minutes proceeded to eat the entire bag and asked me to buy more. M found them less sweet than expected, which I guess is a good thing given how much T still loved them.

Buy again? Yes (T) - he asked three times in 2 days to order more.

Bee Free Warrior Snack Mix Hagen’s Berry Bomb, 3 oz - Estimated Retail Value $1.48

D - 8; M - 8; T - 4

This snack is made of clusters of almonds, seeds, coconut, honey, and berries. What I had expected a bear to eat when I was a kid. The bag was one of the larger snacks, it included three servings and was resealable. However, M or D could have finished the bag in a single sitting.

T was not a fan - he spit out the bite he took.  M and D loved these: great ingredients, a nice soft texture, but good pieces of seeds and dried berries and a good flavor balance.

Buy again? Yes (M and D)

It’s Jerky Y’all Plant Based Jerky Cinnamon Churro, 2.69 oz - Retail Value $7.49

D - 3; M - 3; T - 7

This jerky was also in a larger resealable bag. It is not meat, it is soy-based.

T went in pretty excited as he’s had braces for a few years and had to give up beef jerky, so was looking forward to trying an alternative. He didn’t hate it, but didn’t finish his piece either. We are all current or former meat eaters, so we expected something comparable to a beef jerky. M and D were not fans as the chewy texture wasn’t something we loved. The sweet cinnamon and savory combination was a bit odd, rather than balanced. This was a miss. Maybe a savory variety would have been a better entry into plant-based jerky.

Love Corn - Sea Salt flavor Crunchy Corn, 0.7 oz - Retail Value $0.90

D - 8; M - 8; T - 10

The simplicity of this snack won us over. It's crispy corn, oil and sea salt. Nothing more. They are corn nuts.

T declared this “perfect” and “amazing.” Again, we should note he is a popcorn lover that has had to give it up for more than 2 years due to braces. We all thought this had a great crunch (without risking breaking a bracket). It was savory and addictive, and a nice individual snack size.

Bars

The bar reviewers were just M and T, D is a snacker, bars aren’t his thing.

Verb - S’more Caffeinated Energy Bar, 2 x 0.92 oz - Retail Value $3.62

M - 8; T - 6

I would never usually buy anything with added caffeine, but the labeling suggests this was a reasonable amount, comparable to one expresso. This bar was small, but that's not a negative. It's the perfect size for throwing in my purse for when hunger strikes.

M liked the smooth texture and sweetness, you could taste the fruit, and it had a nice chewiness from the grains.

Buy again? No (products with added caffeine are not our thing, but I would eat it again if available).

Gigantic! Salted Peanut Sorta sweet Candy Bar, 42 g - Retail Value $3.50

M - 7; T - 7

The name says it all for this snack: it IS gigantic. It's sort of sweet, and it's full of peanuts.

T called it a less sweet Snickers. I liked the peanut chunks, crunch, and saltiness to balance the dark chocolate. It was good, but neither of us wanted the rest of the bar - it was just too much.

Barebells Caramel Choco Soft Protein Bar, 1.94 oz - Retail Value $1.95

M - 6; T - 8

This is a chocolate caramel protein bar. It was oozing caramel when it came out of the package - dense, chocolatey, and sticky.

Both M and T thought it was fine if you were in the mood for something sweet, chewy, and chocolatey with some extra protein.

Protein Puck “Good Vibes” variety, 1.34 oz - Retail Value $1.61

M - 8; T - 5

At first I was put off by the name "puck" rather than bar. To me a puck is used to describe something hard and solid. This sunflower, coconut, almond based protein snack was not.

This was surprisingly sweet at first, and then I discovered why. The first ingredient is agave. It was delicious, and has a nice texture from the coconut and seeds. This was the one item I was tempted to finish, until I saw that the entire mini-puck was 200 calories. I guess we just aren’t big sugar snackers here. Honestly, if I was going to have that much sugar it would be a treat, and I would go with a true splurge, like a pastry.  I’m happy to have my seeds and nuts unsweetened and added to other foods.

Buy again? No (but M would eat it again if available).

Chimes Ginger Chews, 1.5 oz - Estimated Retail Value $1.26

M - 9

Not quite a bar, but still falls into this category. They came as a bag of individually wrapped chews. Only tried by M, no one else in the household really likes ginger. They have a nice spicy kick and are very sticky. There was hesitation to have T try it, between braces and the spice, even though T loves spice.

However, I'm looking forward to having these on hand for our road trip later this week to help with any car sickness. I love that they are individually wrapped to throw in my purse.

Other Snacks

Jovial Brown Rice Pasta, 4 oz - Estimated Retail Value $1.66

I wouldn't call this a snack since it needs to be prepared to be eaten, but I did appreciate the addition. This is a 4 oz package of gluten-free organic whole grain brown rice pasta. It is technically 2 servings.

We tasted it alongside some ravioli we were having for dinner. We served it with our usual sauces - butter and parmesan for the kids and Rao’s Marinara for the adults.

Overall, everyone didn’t notice much difference from our regular Barilla. Except for the picky preteen. Still, he said it was decent and although he wouldn’t choose it over his usual pasta, he would eat it again. The rest of the family ate it happily, noting it was more al dente than typical pasta, which was nice.

Buy again? No (Not that we didn’t like it, but our dietary needs and preferences don’t call for an alternative to traditional pasta. But it's great option to know about if we did need a gluten free pasta for guests.)

Nature’s Greatest Foods Organic Coconut Water, 11 oz - Estimated Retail Value $1.65

This is literally just coconut water, no other ingredients. We didn’t try it, as we’re not coconut water fans and didn’t want to waste it. I’ll pass it on to a friend. I do like that it’s a resealable package. Despite this not being a great addition for our family, it’s nice that the variety box is rounded out with drinks, too.

YESLY Enhanced Still Water Beverage, Kiwi Strawberry, 16 oz - Retail Value $2.00

I’m sure there is a market for this product, but it is not us. Straight water is our drink of choice. This is a flavored, sugar-free, vitamin-enhanced water.  Again, this will be passed on to a friend, but not something any of us are interested in trying.

Naturade VeganSmart All-in-one Nutritional Shake, 46 g - Retail Value $2.00

Honestly, no one was jumping to try this, because it is basically a meal replacement, not a snack. It was eventually made and I forced everyone to have a sip. It was fine. No one loved it, no one hated it. It's more nutritious than a chocolate milkshake, but doesn't have quite the same flavor or texture. However, it is vegan, so it is a reasonable alternative to a milkshake for those who don't drink milk.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $30.99 per month + free shipping to the US and $6.95 shipping Canada.

The Small Classic Box contained 16 items, which breaks down to just under $2 per item. The estimated (for sample sizes) and actual retail values of these items added up to a total of $32.37, which is slightly more than the price of the box The box also included cards with coupon codes for the Seven Sundays and the Naturade VeganSmart All-in-one Nutritional Shake.

The value of this box is that we had access to sample and snack sizes of products we wouldn't be able to buy individually - buying a full size product isn’t always cost effective if you aren't sure that you are going to like something. We love doing taste tests, and this box had a good variety. We discovered several (4) products that will be going into the permanent snack rotation.

This box really had a nice variety of savory and sweet, crunchy and chewy. Tasting this variety of items helped us zero in on our personal snacking styles.  When working towards healthier snack choices, it’s easier to make that shift with savory versus sweet options for us.
