First Impressions

October is here, and with it come cooler temps, pumpkin spice, and all of the cozy feels. With less than twenty days left in the first quarter of school, days have been flying by, and winter will be here before we know it. With all of the hustle and bustle, the school year is going well for some, and not so well for others. So I've been utilizing the Sensory TheraPlay box to its full potential in these first couple months. I have to be honest, the October box couldn't come fast enough! With a lot of emotional escalation and anxiety lately, I've utilized almost every single inclusion from past boxes, and couldn't wait to dive into this month's curation. Read below to see what was included in October's box.

What's Inside This Box

Each box comes with a one-page insert, which includes photos of the items on the front and a brief description with their values on the back. It also includes contact information and a disclaimer about how it is the responsibility of the adult to determine whether the items included are appropriate for the child. I love the fact that this sheet specifies how certain items can be used, and what goals can be accomplished. Because I work with a variety of students, it gave me an idea of which items will be most effective with which kids.

Perfect for Halloween! Instead of a postcard, we received an adorable sticker with the quote: "You are a boo-tiful soul that is leaving a hauntingly positive impact on this world!" It's so shiny and cute, I just couldn't resist putting it on my laptop. A great reminder for those tough to get through days!

Squish Monster - Retail Value $9.98

Oh Gre-gory! How fun you are to stretch! With extreme stretch power, this sand filled Frankenstein-looking creature is really fun to stretch, crush, and smash. Soft and pliable, he can stretch pretty far and can be disfigured in a variety of ways. Perfect for busy hands, this toy can be used to improve focus and is just plain fun to play with.

S'mores Break Fidget Activity Set - Retail Value $14.99

I was really excited about the next inclusion because I have quite a few students that are really struggling with identifying their emotions and de-escalating. This S'mores break fidget activity kit comes with multiple tools to help ease children's anxiety and identify their feelings, all while giving them calming prompts. Included is a s'more stress toy, a cocoa cup twisting tower, a cinnamon roll nesting toy, an emotions card, and a calming prompts card set. After trying out the toys myself, I can say they are well designed, absolutely adorable, and very helpful. (Seriously, my own kids loved them and really didn't want to bring them to school.) Featuring different textures, materials, and a variety of smiles, you can't help but cheer up after a few minutes of play.

Sensory Visual Bubble Keychain - Retail Value $4.99

The next inclusion is one I am familiar with, but in a travel version! This 3" Liquid Motion Sensory Bubbler has a string attached to the top to add to a backpack or bag, to keep on hand at all times. With blue and green bubbles, it is very satisfying to watch over and over again. It also makes for a great timer for those kids that have a hard time transitioning, and has helped me in the past in a variety of situations.

Scented Halloween Smencil - Retail Value $2.00

I'll be honest, pencils are my jam. I would 100% rather write with a standard #2 pencil over a pen anyway of the week. That being said, you can bet I was excited to open up this scented Halloween smencil. Made from 100% recycled newspapers, this particular version smells like pumpkin, though I personally hone in on the cinnamon notes over anything else. With a pumpkin wrap on the top and an orange eraser, this is the best smelling pencil I've ever used, and decided to keep this guy for myself.

About Face By EEBOO - Retail Value $18.99

I love games, and Sensory Theraplay does a really awesome job at sending ones that can be played in a variety of ways, without causing escalated feelings of losing. This particular game provides an endless cast of characters created by a variety of found objects combined to make a face. Perfect for working on visual perceptual and visual motor skills, this game gets kids talking and makes for some laughs as well.

Air Dough Go Dragon - Retail Value $3.99

The last item we received this month was an Air Dough Go set in the "Dragon" version. Featuring four dough colors and a wind up base, we have received these types of kits before, and the kids always enjoy them. They are great because they dry overnight, are mess free, and won't stick to fabric or carpet. I like to bring these out when a child just needs to feel extra special. Perfect for tactile sensory input to the hands, and promoting hand strengthening and fine motor skills, these are really fun. Another great inclusion for an already great box!

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $42.00 + shipping (Save with longer subscriptions)

The total retail value of our box using a mix of listed and found retail values comes to $54.94, which is almost $13 off of retail price. That, plus adding in shipping costs means you are definitely getting a deal. The decent value coupled with the items coordinating with the October season left me really impressed this month. Each and every item was useful and fun, and was a hit with my kids (and adults) of all ages. Overall, we are extremely happy with this subscription!

Key Takeaways

If you ask my kids which subscription box is their favorite, both my biological kids and my school kids will tell you that Sensory TheraPlay is definitely it. With a variety of sensory options, we continue to be impressed with the thoughtfulness in this curation. As an educator, I have seen a multitude of fidgets, but this box continues to surprise me! Overall, this was a fantastic box and we have utilized every single item. We can't wait to see what they have in store for November!
