First Impressions

Winc shipments are securely packed in molded cardboard to keep those bottles safe in transit. Everything arrived without any damage.

My box also came with this super detailed Winc magazine that features 'The A-Z of Wine" and "The Greatest Hits." I genuinely enjoy learning about various wines so it was really fun browsing through the pages of this magazine, brushing up on my wine knowledge.

The Wines

Red wine is my love language! So of course after completing my profile Winc recommended these four beautiful bottles of red wines. What is so special about red wine, for me, is that every blend is so unique. They can be bold, smokey, sweet, tart, and so much more. Let's get tasting!

2018 Fog Land® Merlot - $16.99 (Member Price: $14.99)

Washington | Medium | Dry | 14.1% alcohol

I typically don't like merlot, but this one hit differently for me. While it wasn't my favorite bottle this month, I couldn't deny that it was super unique for a merlot. It has this super tart flavor that hits you right away with a smokey finish.

Grown in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, this medium-bodied red shows a New-World flair to this French grape. Mixed use of oak and stainless steel aging give classic notes of dark berry fruit paired with spice and chocolate. This unique fusion of flavors and textures gives this wine a contemporary edge.

After reading their description, I am very happy with how this merlot really stopped me in my tracks. It is meant to be different! This bottle is very fruit-heavy, which is why I was getting hit with that tartness right away. Since this wasn't my favorite I decided to share it with my mom. She loves merlot and was really intrigued by this unique blend and said she is going to get a bottle!

2020 Alma Libre® Carménère - $15.99 (Member Price: $13.99)

Chile | Medium | Dry | 13.8% alcohol

I love wines from Chile, but rarely treat myself to a bottle like this. Goodness, it was so good! This blend has more earthy notes with flavors of bell pepper, cranberry, crushed rock, and dark cherry. It had so many layers to it that really made is super fun to drink! It added a bit of spice to my weekend! The wine was bold, smooth, with a hint of fruit tartness that you get from that bit of cherry. They note that this is a great wine to pair with foods like pizza, Mexican, cured meats, or BBQ. I really might need to get a few bottles of this to take to my parent's next gathering because there is always either BBQ or a meat and cheese board!

2020 Cape Route Pinotage - $15.99 (Member Price: $13.99)

South Africa | Medium | Dry | 14% alcohol

This is the type of wine that I could sip on all night. It was rich, creamy like silk, a little tang without being overly sweet. This blend has notes of tomato leaf, raspberry, blueberry, and anise. This wine is made by winemaker Ernst Storm who was born near Cape Town, and now splits his time between there and Santa Barbara. He creates his wines with hand-crafted methods of the Cape mixed with modern techniques to make these beautifully unique blends. This was hands down my favorite wine this month. So rich and beautiful, I didn't want the bottle to end!

2018 Rosa Obscura Red Blend - $14.99 (Member Price: $12.99)

California | Medium | Slightly Sweet | 14.2% alcohol

This bottle had a very strong fruit flavor, but it was surprisingly fresh and smooth. Since it is so fruit-forward, it is on the sweeter side. Sweet wines are something I don't really enjoy, but I was surprised by how much I liked this bottle! It went down easily and felt like a really great transition wine as the cold winter weather finally starts to break, but it's still actually pretty cold outside and spring slowly attempts to creep in. This is made with red cherry, pomegranate, black currant, and baking spice. Since this is a sweeter wine it can pair well with chocolate, beef, poultry, or even pizza! Again, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this wine - but that is what I love about red wines, they can always surprise you with their smoothness!

Verdict

This box was such a treat! Receiving four bottles of wine right to my door allowed me to stock my wine shelf without having to leave the house. As a wine lover, that is a huge win in my book! Receiving all four red wines might seem slightly basic, but that is what I loved so much about this box because it highlighted four very different bottles of wine. Red wine has so many layers, so many different techniques in the making process, so many different parts of the world that specialize in red wines each bringing their own unique blends. Winc brought me wines from all over that surprised and delighted me with each bottle that I opened. The merlot was the biggest surprise for me since it didn't taste like any other merlot that I have had. My favorite wine this month came from Cape Town, a location that I have never tried wine from, that brought this bold and creamy blend of fruity flavors. Wine for me is something that brings people together, it means family, it means dinners with friends, it means a cozy night on my couch with my husband, it is memories and stories, and that is exactly what these four amazing bottles of wine brought and reminded me of this month.

I took advantage of the 4 bottles for $29.95 deal and have tried two of the wines so far. My first bottle was amazing, the second just OK (both were white wines), but of course I had no problem drinking it. 😀 I decided to skip the next shipment but I’m excited to keep getting wine deliveries every 2-3 months. I don’t like picking out wine because I don’t know much about it, so having Winc pick them for me based on my profile, and sending me wines from unique places, makes this subscription really fun!!
