First Impressions

The first thing I noticed was the new brightly colored box everything came in. I really like the pop of color; it has the cheerful springtime vibes I want in my life. I love the theme of this month’s box: ‘Motherland Vibes’ edition. It’s perfect for Black History Month, and I was excited to take a look and see what themed goodies were included.

Each Brown Sugar Box includes a mini-magazine that highlights the theme of the box, lists the products included, and offers interesting and inspiring articles. This month’s box is the 'Motherland Vibes' edition.

Now, on to the items!

IZZY & LIV Tribal Roots Versatile Wrap Skirt - Retail Value $35

I love how comfortable and flowy this African wrap skirt is. It’s lightweight and versatile and will definitely keep me cool in the warmer summer months. Perfect for cookouts and block parties, I can easily pair it with a solid-colored tank top or a crop top, and my jean jacket will go great with this on those cooler summer nights. This traditional wrap skirt can be worn in five different ways; as an off-the-shoulder dress, a traditional skirt, a halter dress, a layer top, or a backless halter dress. My favorite way to use this piece so far is as a traditional wrap skirt. I really love the bright pattern. Subscribers could have received one of five patterns: Soul of Africa, Zulu Queen, Tribal Queen, Mali Goddess, and Culture, Confidence, Soul.

IZZY & LIV Adinkra Affirmations V-Neck Pocket Tee - Retail Value $28

I always enjoy a plain black tee. They are crisp-looking, comfortable, and versatile. But what I really like about this Ghanaian-inspired t-shirt is the adinkra symbols running down the center of the back of this shirt. Each symbol has a different meaning and is derived from various proverbs and expressions. The v-neck also has a cute little front pocket, and it’s made from soft, cool, comfortable, 100% cotton so that it’ll still keep you cool despite the dark color.

IZZY & LIV Artisanal Coconut Shell Bowl & Spoon Set - Retail Value $16

This bowl is pretty cool. Most notably, it’s made from an actual coconut shell. It’s very lightweight and has an interesting texture. A wooden spoon is included, and it’s perfect for blending my hair masks and hot oil treatments. The whole aesthetic gives me a tropical paradise feel, and I love it. The bowl is handmade from raw materials, hand-wash only and definitely not microwave safe. It will definitely come in handy to have a bowl dedicated to just my hair masks and hair oils.

IZZY & LIV African Seed Bead Drop Earrings - Retail Value $15

Seed Bead Earrings for Brown Sugar Box February 2022

I may not have my ears pierced, but these brightly colored seed bead earrings definitely caught my eye. The intricate pattern and the variety of colorful beads vibrantly encompass an integral part of African culture. I’m very excited to pass these along, and I have the perfect gal pal in mind who I know will absolutely adore these statement earrings. Subscribers could have received one of three colors: red, blue, or yellow. I received red.

UKUVA AFRICA Motherland Spices and Grinder in Fire Spice - Listed Value $8

I’m a huge fan of spicy food, and I really love red chili flakes. This Fire Spice has a delightful blend of flavorful spices that ignite on your tongue like fireworks. Featuring red chili, black pepper, ginger, and a touch of ginseng, this flavorful blend amps up energy and taste. I love that it comes in a grinder and not as a powder (I always find seasonings to be much more flavorful that way), and I like that the bottle is glass. There is also an adorable beaded tassel attached to the top of the grinder that really adds to the whole aesthetic of the box and this month’s theme, ‘Motherland Vibes.’ I can’t wait to amp up some of my favorite tofu dishes with this versatile spice. Subscribers could have received one of six different spices: Lemon Pepper, Tomato Pepper, Ginger and Chili, Spiced Bliss, Garlic Pepper, and Fire Spice. Personally, I’m happy to say that I received Fire Spice.

Verdict

I really enjoyed this month’s Brown Sugar Box, and I loved how everything in the curation was on point with this month’s theme. The Fire Spice was an absolutely delicious peppery zing that I found truly enjoyable, and I love how it enhances a lot of my favorite dishes. Even though I won’t be able to get any use out of the earrings, I know the beautiful and eye-catching design will be a hit with the girl boss I have in mind to regift them to. I absolutely adore the African wrap skirt. The pattern is bold and fun, and the flowy ruffle at the bottom makes it such a statement piece. I’d never really thought how much easier it would be to mix my hair oils and hair masks before applying, and I’m really enjoying having a dedicated coconut bowl to do that in. Lastly, I love the tribal twist on a classic black tee. The adinkra symbols that run down the back make the t-shirt stand out from the other black v-necks I have. Overall, I think this was a really great box; everything was unique, and there was plenty of product diversity.
