Switch is a jewelry rental service that lets you try out designer jewelry without the commitment. You pick your favorite pieces and try them out for as long as you want with a relatively small monthly fee. This is a review of the 3 pieces at a time plan. Switch also offers the option to purchase jewelry pieces at a discounted member price. For every month that you’re a member, you get a $10 credit that you can use towards the purchase of a piece of jewelry at the special member price.

This is a review of the $69 Black Membership that includes 3 pieces a month.

Switch offers free Priority shipping via USPS (1-3 day expected arrival). Each package comes with a prepaid USPS return label, so you can leave your return for your mail carrier or drop it off at the post office if you’re the nervous type. Shipping is free both ways, and they just ask that you package it just as you received it to return to them. It’s important to save the mailer and packaging for your return.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Switch Subscription Box November 2019 Review #2

Even the monochrome black box my items came in looks designer, amirite?

There's a ton of paperwork that comes tucked into the box as well that goes over how the subscription works, how to care for your rental pieces, info on purchasing pieces you fall in love with, and referral benefits. They also include the return shipping label that gets the jewelry back safely via FedEx Express.

Are you excited to see the fancy pieces I chose?? Yeah? Let's do it!

Rebecca De Ravenel Classic Silk Corded Clip Earrings in Navy - Retail Value $295.00, Member Price $275.00

I would never think of wearing earrings this large or long since I ripped my pierced ears as a child. I can no longer wear anything but a stud, and even then, it looks kinda weird. Luckily, these babies come as clip-ons which surprised me! I thought clips-ons were reserved for businesswomen in the '80s (read: my Mom) who didn't want pierced ears- but to my delight even fancy brands do it! These huge navy blue corded silk numbers from Rebecca De Ravenel are actually not as heavy as they look and I love how the three textile balls vary in size and get larger as they go.

Here they are on! They are definitely not to be missed and as rentals, I'm pleased with how good they look with no wear at all coming from a fabric piece.

Lanvin Gold Ball Choker With Black Ribbon - Retail Value $480.00, Member Price $295.00

I just adore the juxtaposition of the industrial brass parts against the romantic black ribbon they hang from on this necklace. It reminds me a little of myself! A little gritty, a little soft. 😜 Since this necklace doesn't have a tiny annoying closure in the back, it's a lot easier for my fumbling fingers to tie this in a bow in the mirror and then swing around to the back. The gold-tone copper and brass has its own patina after an undetermined amount of wear which gives it a special look, unlike any others that may be out there.

It's also adjustable since it's just a piece of ribbon with no chain or links to mess with. I can wear it higher or lower depending on what I'm wearing which makes it really versatile. I also think this can easily dress up a more casual look as a statement piece or dress down something fancier like how I'm pairing it with sequins, above. What a great piece!

Yves Saint Laurent Monogram Bracelet in Black, medium - Retail Value $725.00, Member Price $675.00

This was torture for me to send back. I loved it so so much and I'm not even someone who would normally sport a designer logo so blatantly like this. There's something a little abstract about the monogram logo in this form, but one night when I wore it out my friend Nicole immediately noticed it and exclaimed: "Uh- is that a YSL cuff?!" knowing full well I shouldn't be able to afford one. She's right, and even with the member price, this baby would be $675 to purchase. That's why rentals are such a fun new world. I can especially see using this service for an event where no one will ever know you can't afford it or you don't own it.

This cuff was HEAVY and while it isn't conducive to typing at a desk all day, I loved feeing the weight of it on my wrist. It's such a cool statement piece and I love that it's a sturdy metal powder-coated in black which makes it both tough yet impressive since it's such a desired brand.

The Verdict: My first experience with Switch was fantastic! There was a lot for me to choose in my taste (which surprised me since I'm such a minimalist) and I was tickled that I could rent beautiful designer clip-on earrings as well. Renting designer jewelry like this made me feel like a million bucks without spending that and even if I just rented once piece at a time, I think it's well worth how nice it made me feel. If you want to see more pieces in action, check out Megan and me using rental services like this for holiday outfits in our recent post

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Switch lets you choose whatever pieces you want (including the ones above), but not everything will be available at the time you want it.

ACTIVE DEAL: Save 50% off your first month
CODE: LOVEMSA

Value Breakdown: For this box, I rented three pieces of jewelry worth $1500.00 for just $69.00 That's 4.6% of their retail value which is what fits my real life budget.

I love your reviews. You look stunning. I think this would be great to use if you have a big event that you want to impress with some fabulous jewelry. I love clothing rentals and I’ve had no issue with ripped or worn out clothes. I did rocksbox for 18 months but I bought a piece almost every time with my credit from the rental. Does this subscription let you use the 69 towards your purchase?

Thanks so much, Kristine!
The $69 (or $29 or $49) is the cost to rent only, so it doesn’t get put toward any purchases. However, you accrue credit with each month you are subscribed that adds up and can be put towards a purchase. 🙂 Gold members accumulate $5/month, Platinum members get $7/month, and Black members earn $10/month.

I love unique jewelry. I would never sub for rental pieces of used jewelry. I would rather contract with an independent artist for a cuff bracelet in MY initials as a one of a kind piece. (Which I’ve done.)

But you COULD buy the bracelet….instead of renting items from the subscription- for 10 months instead of subscribing save your money instead and you’d have the funds to buy that YSL bracelet brand new to own forever. Spending $70 a month to borrow used jewelry just baffles me.

Very true, Lisa! It just depends on the person and if they’d prefer to own one piece or try out several for the cost. Rental jewelry like Switch is certainly for a specific type of person who wants high-end variety OR for someone who has a specific event in mind to plan for.

I’m not one to wear obviously branded stuff either, but that bracelet! 😍

I have had jewelry rental subs and I can tell you that typically every piece you get will have signs of wear. Know that, it’s baffling that they can list these prices with a straight face.
Used items ought to be HEAVILY discounted.

Although I love the idea of the adjustable ribbon, with a piece that expensive I would be worried about the knot coming lose and me losing it. Seems like it would be a fine line between tying it securely and permanently mangling the ribbon because of how tight it’s always tied.

I lived in NYC while interning one summer in the 1990s. At the time, it seemed like the subways were always plastered with huge numbers of ads for one of two things. One was for surgery to repair torn earlobes, the other was a treatment for hemorrhoids…Crazy the things that get remembered…

The subscription always shocks me with their inflated retail prices. There is no way that jewelry is that expensive

You can google the prices.

They are designer pieces, they are absolutely that expensive. Its a little ridiculous for sure, but you pay for the brand.
