Collections by Joya December 2018 Review

Most months, I open my Collections by Joya to find a card featuring a jewelry-bedecked model. I'm loving the stacked bracelets on this one. I usually go by the ol' Coco Chanel quote, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off," since most of my jewelry is somewhat statement-y, but I'm inspired by this maximalist jewelry look—I think it works because it's made up of mostly neutrals.

On the back is info about where you can shop Joya.

I had only been reviewing Joya for 3 months when my December box came last year and I remember being so enchanted by the elevated experience they created for the holidays. You can reminisce with me by checking out the review here. I had a Christmas-morning-like moment when I received this month's box in the mail because I don't ever do a pre-open of it before exploring it to review, and this time around I fetched it off my porch in the evening, past when the light for photographing would be good. So I had to wait with anticipation until morning to see what was inside! Among other things, there was the usual canvas pouch containing a surprise piece of jewelry.

Roman Earrings — Retail Value $68.95

In the pouch was this lovely pair of Roman Earrings. You know I love a good fringe earring, but I'm especially vibing on this classed-up version with moody navy tassels affixed to sophisticated hammered brass. They'll be perfect for the holidays!

I have already worn them with a variety of casual-to-fancy outfits!

Black Cable Wool, Fleece Lined Gloves — Buy a similar here for $18.99

Also included were these black knit gloves with a cable design on the back of the hand and the warmest fleece lining. These gloves fit snugly on my small hands, but they're stretchy so I believe they would fit larger hands well, too. They seem impenetrable from the winter wind! They don't have a media fingertip on them, which I would have liked, but then again, that silver-tipped look can cheapen a pair of gloves a bit, I think.

Side note: for $48.95, Joya offers a wrapped gift set, which includes a fringe necklace and a pair of these gloves, plus a candle. There are other combos available for purchase, too. It looks like a beautifully curated gift experience—sort of what I was expecting from this month's sub box!

Red Lettered Goods Merry Christmas Card — Retail Value $4.50

Finally, I received a cute Christmas card! I always use gift tags to mark my presents, or sometimes even just use stamps on brown paper, so I don't have much use for a single Christmas card. That said, this could be included in a mailed package to a friend or family member who won't be with you this holiday season. I love love love that deep green envelope—it would look so perfect with metallic silver or gold writing on it!

Joya didn't include a fancy box for gifting this year, just the classic cardstock sleeve box and some shiny gold ribbon. Even a different colored sleeve box would've felt more special, but alas, I plan on keeping this month's earrings, so I suppose I wouldn't be using it anyway! Perhaps that's feedback they got from last year (that people ended up keeping their jewelry instead of gifting it), and adjusted this year's December box accordingly.

Verdict: It was fun to see how Collections by Joya chose to make their Christmas box special this year. It's perhaps not quite as magical as I was hoping based on last year's experience, but they still included some solid items. This box costs $49.95, including free shipping. The earrings, gloves, and Christmas card add up to $92.44, which is a great value.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Order by 1/8 to get the January box!

Value Breakdown: At $49.95 for this box, here's approx. what you're paying approximately per item:

  • Earrings: $37.26
  • Gloves: $10.26
  • Card: $2.43

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.

I was buying directly from “Collection by Joya”, the same website that sells the subscription boxes. Maybe my experience was so bad because I was just ordering items off of their website and not getting the subscription box. If it’s a small company, I could see them getting overwhelmed with many orders around Christmas. But not responding to an email from a customer until three weeks after the order was placed, with a notice that the order was canceled without checking with the customer, is just really bad. Maybe they’re much better equipped to handle the subscription box because the orders are all the same or similar.

Because people seem to feel pretty strongly that they are actually a good company, I’ll give them a chance and re-order the items. Hopefully they are as beautiful in person as they look on the website.

Thanks for sharing about your experiences!

I am sorry you had that experience. But, I have been an annual subscriber for at least 1 and a half years. That’s about 50 pieces of jewelry. I have never had a broken piece. I have ordered additional items and never had a problem. I needed to change my address and a service rep quickly processed it for the box to be shipped out in a few days. I have been extremely pleased with this company, how they give back, and the quality of jewelry. I highly recommend that you give them a try. I receive multiple compliments when I wear there jewelry. I am the one that first suggested MSA should review it and spread the word on such an affordable box.

I found their customer service to be outstanding, also. It’s unfortunate to read about such an unpleasant experience, when I found them to be so nice. I hope it was a fluke, because I’ve also found them to be extremely responsive and kind.

Do not order from this company! They are the worst.

On Black Friday I ordered some jewelry I’d been eyeing for a while and took advantage of their discount. TWO WEEKS later I hadn’t heard anything about shipping so I emailed them asking when it would ship. No response. Then over a WEEK later I got notification that I was being refunded for the order. When I emailed a question about what happened, I finally got a response, but it was obviously a form email sent out to lots of different people. It stated that the order had been canceled because it wouldn’t arrive in time for Christmas. So I checked the website, and all of the items were out of stock. Meanwhile, in the over THREE WEEKS since making the order, I had been receiving marketing emails almost daily from Joya advertising sales. I’m not sure why they were eliciting more business when they were running out of stock. And I have NEVER heard of a company just canceling an order without checking in with the customer first. And lying about the reason why, no less. I wonder if they gave the products I ordered to people who had paid for them with a lower discount. I’ve been looking forward to ordering these products for months, but will not be giving this company any of my business. After sending feedback I got a response that looked like it was actually from a real person, with a 50% off code but it’s only good until 12/31, and they have no idea when the items I want will be back in stock. The response did state that they were “overwhelmed” with Christmas orders. But if that was the case they shouldn’t have been taking new orders and sending marketing emails on top of that. This is just horrible business practice.

I’ve also seen in these reviews that a good number of the items have broken after only a few uses.

I recommend buying your jewelry from a more honest and reliable company.

Sorry you experienced that. It seems that a number of places now carry “collections by Joya” jewelry. Were you buying directly from Collections by Joya or a merchant carrying their products?

The reason I ask is that like the others who have posted here, I’ve had nothing but truly outstanding customer service from them. Actually it’s been some of the very best support I’ve ever encountered in the sales industry! I recommend this box to everyone I meet.
