Rad and Hungry x Spain STMT Kit Stationery Review – April 2018

Rad and Hungry STMT x Spain box

Rad and Hungry was sparked by founder Hen Chung's addiction to travel and office supplies. This subscription box combines the two—each kit in The Something Mighty (STMT) Collection is filled with office supplies locally sourced from around the world. Custom designs and sweet wrap jobs transform each monthly subscription box into a full-on, hands-on experience with a different destination at its focus. Each new STMT Kit is released during the first part of the month, 10 months of the year. (They work on other goodies in June and December.)

Rad and Hungry Spain STMT Kit April 2018 Review

Rad and Hungry is always such a treat with many layers- so let's dig in!

Renew Reminder

When you are on the last kit of your subscription, you'll see this sticker that reminds you to renew your subscription.

Packing List

There's a packing list as well that loosely lists the items included in the kit. The hot pink sticker denotes that you get a bonus goodie for sharing photos, and the white sticker denotes the yearly subscriber bonus.

First layer of goodies

Opening the first kraft paper wrapping revealed the bonuses, as well as the monthly passport stamp (seen on top), and the print, low down, and other goodies underneath.

Two Milan Erasers

BONUS: Milan Erasers x2

First up is what I'm assuming is the bonus for sharing photos on social media. These two erasers have a really cool design to them! I always am in need of smart-looking tools to fix my mistakes.

BONUS: Milan Triangular Graphite Pencils x3

If you're a yearly subscriber, you'll receive three Milan pencils. These are unique in that their triangular design ensures they don't roll off your desk! I got one of each: Graphite B (green), Graphite 2B (blue), and Graphite HB (red). Very beautiful!

Photos from trip descriptions of photos

Rubberband Stand Photos

Hen usually throws a little something in the package from the trip, like candies, but this time there are two small photo cards of her trip to the "Rubberband Stand" she talks about in the Low Down.

STMT x Spain Passport Stamp

STMT x Spain Passport Stamp

This month's passport stamp features the words "Poppin' Bands" and has little ions like stars and firecrackers. As always, it comes complete with a "canceled" postage stamp from the featured country. So cool! Into my passport, it goes!

STMT x Spain Print Note on back of print

STMT x Spain Print

The print, of course, has the same design and will be going on my corkboard with its counterparts from Korea, Georgia, Germany, etc. The ink used this time is an even deeper reddish orange than last year but still super bright. The back has a personal note from Hen to yours truly.

The Low Down- folded up one side of the low down other side of the low down

The Low Down

This month's Low Down was a fun read in which I never thought I'd leaving having a new found respect for rubber bands. I am 100% on the same wavelength as Hen and tend to geek out on the same "lo-fi" goods she does but I don't think I've given the rubberband a second thought. While at a flea market in Madrid, she came upon a busy mom-n-pop stand just dripping with rubber bands and she describes the same feeling I get when I come upon a treasure like that.

Anther wrapped package

Here we have the second layer of wrapping that holds the monthly offerings from the trip.

Folder with rubberband around it

Blue Karman Folder back of Blue Karman Folder opened Blue Karman Folder inside of Blue Karman Folder

Karman Folder/Notebook Cover in Blue

What a cool folder! It has faux marbled insides and when closed, you use an attached elastic band to wrap around it to keep it that way. There's space on the outside to label it if need be, but I could never "ruin" it. Almost everything from the box this month fit neatly inside which gave me a tremendous amount of satisfaction.

Large White and Small Green Rubber Bands

Yep, this is the type of hyper-specialized subscription box that sends rubber bands as an item and I'm EATING IT UP. The white big boy was wrapped around the folder and can be used to keep other things in order as well. I wish I could have seen it hanging at the stand in Madrid! I unfolded this paper to reveal another gang of smaller green rubber bands. These are pretty similar to ones I'd see on produce at my local co-op.

Another pencil was tucked into the paper full of rubber bands and comes in the form of this vintage number, straight from Spain circa 1966. A little slice of history in this green cedar wood writing utensil.

Vintage Unicef Notebook

The first of two vintage notebooks is this one from a series featuring children from all over the world, circa 1979. Mine came in blue with a little girl on the cover. It's staple-bound and has white ruled paper inside. I wonder where the girl is now?

Vintage Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente Wildlife Notebook inside of Vintage Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente Wildlife Notebook back of Vintage Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente Wildlife Notebook

Vintage Fauna Notebook featuring Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente

Similar to the Unicef one, this notebook came from a series featuring the Spanish naturalist, Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente who is best known for the highly successful and influential TV series, El Hombre y la Tierra. I received a notebook with a black stork on the front with a yellow and orange border. Also the same as the Unicef notebook, this one is staple-bound with lined notebook paper inside.

Verdict: It was tough for Rad and Hungry STMT Kit to surpass last month, in my opinion, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this kit, especially with the bonuses. Receiving vintage items is always a treat for an office supply nerd like myself, and the story about the rubber bandstand in Madrid gave me a new respect for the unsung gummy heroes.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This kit is still available as a one-time purchase, but if you sign up for a subscription today, next month's Vietnam kit will be your first.

Value Breakdown: For $31.00, I received a screened print, a screened passport stamp, two notebooks, a pencil, a folder, and a gang of rubber bands. As always, this one is near impossible to put a dollar value on, but the overall experience is a huge draw to this lo-fi stationery subscription. Without the regular goodies (like the print and passport stamp), OR the bonus items, this kit came with five items, so it's like paying $6.20 per item.

This subscription is a total scam. I purchased a 3-box subscription. Received only one box. No response to multiple email follow-up inquiries.

Curation or not, it’s a waste of money. I can read an amazing blog on the internet for free. And then the other stuff locally for $5.

Such a whimsical and interesting subscription. Appreciate the simple and functional items, finding the beauty in everyday things. Beauty and value is in the eye of the beholder. If I had just seen the items without explanation then it would be hard to justify the price vs “value”. However it seems like this subscription is also about the story telling and exploration of an experience or common object and I find that delightful.

I love the stork notebook. I think it’s cool that such experiential and specialty niche boxes like this can exist.

Sorry to say this but I feel like this sub value is around $5 for everything including shipping and the rest is to send the curator on a vacation.

A bold face scam

That’s only if you restrict your valuation to the physical goods. People pay plenty of money to read ebooks, stream videos, go to plays or movies, etc where what you are left with is a mere memory. It’s about an experience. Hardly anyone would call those a “scam”. How is this box any different? Clever prose, history, PLUS a few small highly practical items.
