Green Chef Keto Meal Plan December 2017 Review

ACTIVE DEAL: Limited Time Only! Get $250 off + free shipping
CODE: MSA200

The Products: Quick, chef-created recipes using organic, sustainable ingredients.

Ships to: Continental U.S. (except for some parts of Louisiana) for &9.99 shipping & handling per box.

Good to Know: This box is great for people with dietary restrictions or special diets. Some plans offer even further customization to make it suit your family best.

Recently, my husband and I have really jumped into the Keto diet. Green Chef’s Keto plan works well for us because I like to eat low carb and he is lactose-intolerance (the plan is dairy-free). There isn’t the same level of customization offered with this plan that is available with some of the other plans, but it has forced me to vary my diet.

Green Chef December 2017 - Box inside

Green Chef makes sourcing sustainable, organic ingredients top priority. They are thorough in the ingredient list and allergy warnings on their recipes. The prices per meal are higher than some other competitors, but like eating high-quality, organic food from the grocery store, it costs more. Plus, we found that we spend much less than eating out and love not having to play the “what should we eat for dinner” game.

They also have a page on their site that walks you through how you can recycle all of the packaging.

As for shipping, you get to choose from a delivery day of Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays. The box is well insulated and you don’t have to be at home when it is delivered. Your food will stay fresh and cool. They make it very easy to change your delivery schedule or skip a week anytime. You don’t have the option of switching out meals, but you can see your menus a couple of weeks in advance so you can skip whichever weeks you don’t like.

Let’s see these dinners!

Cod Ingredients

Blackened Cod

Roasted broccoli & radish, romaine salad, bacon

Calories per serving: 580

Total time, according to Green Chef: 35 minutes

Actual time: 40 minutes

Green Chef has just redesigned their recipe cards to be more user-friendly. They also added the amount of each ingredient so now the meals are easier to recreate if you keep the recipe card.

There is a short description of the dinner, prep + cook time, calorie count, allergen info, tools you’ll need, and each meal is color-coded to help you organize your ingredients.

On the back, you will find a step-by-step guide with pictures on how to prepare your meal. The checkboxes are a new addition and help a lot if you jump around or split the prep between two people. You’ll also find chef’s tips and helpful bits of info to help if you aren’t a seasoned cook.

This meal had minimal chopping and the fish had no fishy smell. That is super important to me considering I’m a self-proclaimed seafood hater. Cod is beginning to change my mind though!

Putting the cod, broccoli, and radishes into the oven to roast.

Cooking the thick chunks of bacon.

Assembling the salad and mixing the dressing.

This was such a great light meal with lots of flavor. The salad had a fresh, citrusy flavor and the bacon fat dressing was amazing. The broccoli and radishes were simple and filling and the cod was spicy and perfectly flaky. One thing I love about this box is that our vegetable intake has been upped so much.

Five-Spice Chicken ingredients bagged

Five-Spice Chicken

Snap peas, cabbage & rutabagas, cashews, kimchi

Calories per serving: 400

Total time, according to Green Chef: 25 minutes

Actual time: 40 minutes

Lots of Asian flavors and only 400 calories got me excited for this meal.

back of Five-Spice Chicken recipe card

This meal had minimal prep and we only needed one pan. Yes! We split the chicken breasts up into smaller pieces, seasoned it, and sautéed it. Then we sautéed the rutabagas and added the rest of the veggies and curry paste. We added the chicken back to the pan to simmer with the rest of the ingredients which really brought the flavors together.

Sautéing the chicken.

Simmering rutabaga.

All of the veggies got added together to cook.

Five-Spice Chicken plated

This low calorie meal was surprisingly filling. I find that many of the sauces included in this meal box have so much flavor that I am satisfied with less food. This meal had a lot of great textures too and a little sriracha added a bit of kick. This meal took a bit longer than expected to make this because John cooked without my help but with both of us prepping and cooking, this would be a super quick and easy meal.

Beef Shakshuka ingredients

Beef Shakshuka

Bell pepper, tomatoes, eggs, cauliflower “rice”

Calories per serving: 530

Total time, according to Green Chef: 35 minutes

Actual time: 50 minutes

front of Beef Shakshuka recipe card

I’ve hoped for more practice with cauliflower rice since it is such a great base for meals. Luckily it was included with this meal. And with a wonderful tomato based beef topping and egg!

back of Beef Shakshuka recipe card

We started with some chopping of onion, pepper, and jalapeno. Then we cooked the ground beef and veggies in the sauté pan together. For the next part, we added sauces to the pan and it created a stew-like texture. We dropped the eggs into the mix and let them simmer on the top until the eggs cooked through. The “rice” was cooked in a different pan with jalapeno and cilantro, very simple.

Pepper, onion, and garlic simmering together.

Cauliflower rice and jalapeno crisping in the pan.

Beef and tomato sauce simmering.

The eggs simmering on top of the stew-like sauce.

Beef Shakshuka plated

Oh my gosh! This was one of the best meals I’ve had from this box. Or maybe since starting Keto. It was so savory and a perfect meal for chilly weather. The meaty sauce had so much flavor and the cauliflower rice was perfect for soaking up all of the juice and filling us up. I’m so glad they include the measurements for the ingredients now because we will make this again.  I think anytime I crave spaghetti, this will be my go-to.

The Verdict: I’m super happy with our Green Chef keto box this month. I feel like the calorie count has gone up a bit from previous boxes but I can’t complain because the flavor is there. I’m also loving the inclusion of ingredient measurements. It is so important to me to feel like I have options in preparing dishes for a specific diet, so learning about new sides and sauces has been invaluable for me. Plus, I felt great about eating organic, sustainable ingredients. And yay for getting all of the ingredients you need delivered right to your door. Even though this plan cost a little more than the other plans offered by Green Chef, a meal for both of us breaks down to about $30, we end up saving money versus if we went out and we stick to our eating plan. One big issue I’ll put out there is that I wish they provided macro counts for these meals, or at least carb counts. For someone eating a specific diet like keto, that is a huge part.

I also clicked for the dog.

(I’m totally not into keto. I eat over a hundred grams of carbs a day and love it.)

I’m on a strict keto, trying to keep my carb to 10-15 mg a day and like you, would appreciate them including the carb amount for each meal. Would you say that after you and your hubby had your dinner, did you ended with leftovers or the portions were more on the smaller size? Thx u

Hi Marie, we both feel like it is just the right amount of food to feel full and satisfied. We’ve never had leftovers. That being said, I think if there was another serving of food, we wouldn’t be able to keep ourselves from having seconds.

Yup, clicked to see the adorable dog. Glad I did because I’ve been wanting to start the keto diet. Looks good.

I had a very mixed experience with this box over a period of months. Almost all of the produce and meat are natural and certified organic.. But, we got cracked eggs we couldn’t use a few times.
Unlike some of the other boxes ( Hello Fresh for sure), the sauces are already made fresh.
Everything always arrived with good cooling packs and all even in hot weather.

However, we didn’t know we’d get wild game ( there was a very very awkward interface for meals and little to no selection offered when I was getting this box).
We got food poisoning from pre-ground elk.
On July 4th. I have a degree which I’ve used for many years which closely correlates with safe food handling and best cooking practices, so I really do not think we did anything to cause our food borne illnesses. Also, the only food we’d consumed in tandem was the ground elk burgers.

I like the completeness and the attention to details, but I’d like to offer a word of caution about ground meat choices vs. whole meats or meatless options.

Good review but I am confused by one thing…after Keto in brackets it says vegan. But those were not vegan.

Oops! Good catch. It definitely shouldn’t say vegan in the Keto info. I’ll make sure to update that.

Count me as another “clicked for dog”- she’s beautiful! That inquisitive look on her face, it’s like she’s asking the mailman if he forgot something … like the box with the puppy food.

She is always SUPER interested in seeing if any of my boxes are for her. That and some of our delivery guys bring treats. 🙂 Spoiled.

Such a cute pup! (I don’t cook and also opened the review for the puppy. :))

I admit it…I LOVE food but I opened this review for the puppy. Even if stubborn, she’s adorable…and I know that look well. 🙂
