October 2017 Review

Info card

This is the second month in a row that hasn't been curated by a specific editor; it looks like they're shifting towards this being more general focus instead of having a specific theme each month.

Info card

Looks like we have a variety of snacks and gear to dig into this month– this box was absolutely filled to the brim! Let's see what we've got this month.

Munk Pack Protein Cookies

Munk Pack Protein Cookie, Double Dark Chocolate – Retail Value $2

Munk Pack Protein Cookie, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip – Retail Value $2

Protein cookies are by far my favorite form of protein bar goodness, and these cookies from Munk Pack were pretty darn good.

Munk Pack Protein Cookies

They're big and chewy, with only the tiniest bit of that chalky "this is a high protein baked good" taste. I probably could have been fooled into thinking these were normal cookies if they were dipped in a nice glass of cold milk.

Munk Pack Protein Cookies

Each cookie is two servings each with 360 calories, so they're great for fueling up before or after a long workout.

Munk Pack Protein Cookies

Of the two flavors, I liked the peanut butter chocolate chip more. I ate this one for breakfast one day and still felt full at lunchtime!

Munk Pack Protein Cookies

All in all, these were great and I'd recommend them if you're looking for a decent protein cookie that still tastes decadent.

Gatorade Packet Gatorade Packet

Gatorade Thirst Quencher Powder – Retail Value $1.66 (Buy a 12-count for $20)

This little packet gets mixed with 24 oz of water for instant Gatorade. I have memories of my dad stirring up big batches of this classic Lemon-Lime flavor for his buddies when they'd go on long cycling rides... this is honestly still my favorite flavor of Gatorade.

Especially in the summer, I find that I sometimes really need something like this instead of straight water if I've been out in the heat for awhile. This packet would be great to stow away in the glove box so I can mix on the go.

Burt Yasso Socks

Women's Stance Socks, Performance Poly Blend – Retail Value $18

Are you ready for the goofiest pair of running socks maybe ever?

Burt Yasso Socks

Yes friends: this is none other than Mayor of Running, Burt Yasso. What better way to keep the wind on your heels with a bit of encouragement from Burt on your feet?

Burt Yasso Socks

(Since I'm not actually a Runner's World subscriber, I didn't know who Burt was until a few kind readers helped me on out a past RWB review.)

Burt Yasso Socks

Stance socks are supportive and comfortable, and generally, I like them. This design is just so hilariously weird that it's awesome. I can't wait until I can run in warmer weather to show off the tiny Burts on my calves!

Burt Yasso Socks

The women's medium was just a tiny bit big for my size 6.5 feet (I usually wear a small in Stance), but I think they'll be fine for my regular short neighborhood runs.

Minute Ready to Serve Rice

Minute Rice Ready to Serve Multi-Grain Medley - Retail Value $2? (Buy a 4-pack for $21.16)

The info card lists this as $2, but honestly, I think it's probably more like $4-5 in stores? I haven't seen these on shelves at my local grocery store so I'm not totally sure, but $2 seems quite cheap to me.

Minute Ready to Serve Rice

These individual cups of rice and other grains look super easy to prepare in just a minute in the microwave.

Minute Ready to Serve Rice

I haven't prepared these yet, but I like the idea of helping to make lunchtime a bit healthier and easier. Combine with some frozen grilled chicken and some frozen broccoli and you've got an awesome lunch in under 5 minutes!

Drysure

Drysure Shoe Dryer - Retail Value $37.95

At first glance, I thought these were deodorizers – but they're just meant to help dry off your wet or sweaty shoes after you run or are outside in wet weather.

Drysure Drysure

There is nothing worse than putting your feet back into damp shoes after they get wet, so I love the idea of these electricity-free tools that soak up moisture. They should work for 7 days before you need to 'reactivate' them by leaving them out in the sun or sitting them on top of a hot radiator etc.

Drysure

The soft inside part does all the work, but the plastic 'cage' around it is really helpful for getting the squishy inner part all the way into your shoe for maximum effectiveness.

Drysure

This does appear to be made of the same stuff as the silica packets you might find in shipping boxes

Drysure Apricot jam Apricot jam

Fiordifrutta sample

Runner's World gave this a value on their info card, but I don't typically include foil packet samples like this one (especially since I've gotten this brand numerous times before in other boxes).

The jam itself was quite good though! This is an easy and healthy-ish breakfast served with toast, and I like that this is organic and sweetened with juice.

Verdict

This Runner's World Box felt fun to open, and I do really love the crazy Burt Yasso socks. I'm not sure yet how much use I'll get out of the Drysure Shoe Dryers, but I think they'll definitely come in handy this winter when the weather refuses to cooperate. The food items this month were great, too, and will all get used up.

Value Breakdown: Our box was worth about $66 at retail prices this time. For $29.99 + $8 shipping ($37.99 total), here's what you're paying for each item this month:

  • 2 Protein Cookies - $2.30
  • Gatorade Packet - $1.15
  • Burt Yasso Socks - $10.35
  • Minute Rice - $2.30
  • Drysure Shoe Dryers - $21.85

Good to know, thank you, I really wasn’t sure if the value for that one was accurate at all!
