Super Powered Nutrition Amarok Beef Stick (2 oz) – Retail Value $5.99
These are free of preservatives and nitrates as well as gluten and soy. The beef used to make these is not treated with hormones or antibiotics (and the cows are grass-fed). This is obviously not vegetarian so I will pass it along to someone else when I get back into the office. However, if you are not a fan of protein bars or protein shakes, this could be a good option for you if you are looking to increase your protein intake – 2 sticks of this have a combined 20 grams.
Emmy’s Organics Dark Cacao Coconut Cookies (6 oz) – Estimated Value $6.24 (buy 8 bags for $49.95)
OK, now here is a snack I can totally get behind. I love coconut and I love chocolate. These are vegan and gluten free but they do have tree nuts (almonds). I’ve had a lot of different coconut cookies before, thanks to subscription boxes, and these hold together better than most. (This brand and product are not new to me.)
Kill Cliff Endure in Blood Orange (20 fl oz) – Estimated Value $2.50 (buy a 12-pack for $29.99)
This is a non-artificial take on Gatorade. This is a huge bottle but one thing I like is that they are not at all deceptive about serving size – one bottle equals one serving, so you don’t have to do any calorie math. I’ve received this product in another fitness box in a different flavor, but I think I prefer this blood orange variety. This is low in sodium, has lots of potassium, and contains palatinose (aka isomaltulose), a slow-release carbohydrate. (Don’t worry about consuming palatinose, it is made from glucose and fructose that are just connected in a slightly different way from how they are in table sugar.)
Junk Big Bang Lite Headband – Retail Value $15.99
Subscribers could’ve received either a headband or a tank. There is a bit of a value discrepancy between the headband and tank (which goes for $24.99), but I am actually not upset about getting the headband. I have like 50 tanks by this point and not nearly so many headbands, and I know these are good headbands because I have tried them out before. They are lightweight and breathable and help keep hair that won’t fit in my ponytail out of my eyes while I work out.
BLDG Active Repair Hydrogel (3 fl oz) – Retail Value $29.99
This product is new to me. This kills 99.9% of bacteria within a few seconds of contact and is supposed to help speed your body’s healing from things like cuts, insect bites, burns, etc. The main ingredient is hypochlorous acid and I actually found several peer-reviewed studies suggesting this is a great ingredient for this product’s intended purpose. I put some on a papercut last night so we’ll see how it goes (you can use this several times a day). I’m not sure I would buy it all the time because of the cost, but I am definitely glad to have had a chance to try it out.
Tiger Balm Ointment (0.07 oz x 2) – Estimated Value $0.93 (buy 0.63 oz for $4.19)
I have not tried this particular pain relief ointment before. It has ingredients similar to competing products (menthol, camphor, etc.) but it also has cajeput oil (alternative spelling “cajuput” oil). WebMD says there is insufficient evidence for the efficacy of this ingredient in pain relief, but there appears to be a history of people using it for that purpose. I don’t have the kind of pain that would benefit from this right now (can’t exercise for at least another month after having surgery), so I will be saving it to test out in the future. Please note this may cause allergic or sensitivity reactions in some people.
Tiger Balm Pain Relieving Patch (x 2) – Estimated Value $2.92 (buy 5 patches for $7.29)
Now these, I have tried before (they’ve been making the rounds of fitness subscription boxes). And I actually think they are some of the better patches out there. I am happy to have a couple more. These also have camphor, eucalyptus, and menthol, in addition to capsaicin (the hot compound from chili peppers).
Pro-Tec Athletics Spiky Massage Ball – Retail Value $9.95
This is specifically marketed for the foot condition called plantar fasciitis, which I have (worse when I’m working out a lot). This is supposed to do deep tissue massage and promote circulation in the feet. It does feel nice to use and we will see over time how well it helps.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $74.51 for the November WODBOM. That’s a good value for this box, at more than $30 over the cost of the box plus shipping, and other than the beef sticks, these contents were quite useful for me this month. The wound healing hydrogel is something I would never have heard of on my own and is too costly to buy without knowing how well it works, but I am definitely cool with receiving some to try out (which is one of the points of a subscription box!). I’ll use the headband and the drink, the cookies are appreciated, and I’m excited about the spiky massage ball (and the Tiger Balm samples are nice extras).
