Each box comes with a fold out card detailing the items included, and what themes inspired the box.

The themes this month are: fireflies, bonfire, camp, sand, and fireworks.

Now, on to the items!

Ocean Tribe by Turkish-T Kilim Towel – Value $49

This is one of my favorite POPSUGAR items of all time! I love Turkish towels, and this one is different than any of the others in my collection. The pattern is gorgeous, and the fabric is a little thicker than your standard Turkish towel, too! It’s a perfect beach/pool towel!

It’s 100% Turkish Cotton and measures 35 x 63 inches. The reverse side is lovely, too:

This could also work as a throw blanket for indoors or outdoors.

Here it is with me holding it up to give you a better sense of scale:

Bando Sip Sip Tumbler – Value $14

I love Bando! (I buy their agendas and phone cases all the time!) They are such a fun and cute brand, and this tumbler matches their aesthetic perfectly.

It’s a double-walled acrylic tumbler with a silicone straw.

It holds 20 ounces and is handwash recommended. (I’ve put other Bando tumblers in the dishwasher on the top rack and had no issues, though.)

Supergoop Super Power Sunscreen Mousse SPF 50 – Value $19

Another brand I love! (And I’m always happy to see quality sunscreen in subscription boxes.) This mousse formula is new to me, and it is amazing. (For reference, you need about a golf ball sized amount of mousse for each arm.)

It’s super easy to blend into your skin, and it is SO lightweight! And the formula is free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and oxybenzone.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes Waterproof Mascara – Value $23

!!! This is the waterproof version of my holy grail mascara! It adds volume, length, and you can apply multiple layers without any clumping issues. I normally buy the non-waterproof version, so it’s great to have this for the summer.

And it is REALLY waterproof! It’s even a little makeup remover proof! You will need a really good makeup remover to get this off, but the good news is you will not have to worry about any smudging, flakes, etc.

One thing I’ve noticed with both the regular and waterproof formulas is that the first one or two applications take a little more time/coats to get the results I want. After that, the wand seems to be perfectly coated, and the formula goes on perfectly in a few coats. (So if you aren’t in love with it after the first try, don’t give up!)

Sisters of Los Angeles California Fireplace Matches – Value $10

I love the colors and design of this box!

And these oversized matches (10 inches long) are perfect for lighting grills, bonfires, etc.

Snyder’s of Hanover Wholey Cheese Smoked Gouda – Value $3.50

These cheese crackers are gluten free and made with real cheese.

My taste testers agreed they were super airy, crisp, and just generally delicious!

Verdict: This box has a retail value of about $118. And I think it’s my perfect summer box. There are so many brands I love in the July box, and a lot of products I would pay full price for, so the value here is even higher for me!

What do you think of the July POPSUGAR Must Have Box? Does this box feel perfect for summer for you too?

  1. This is the first PopSugar box I’ve liked since February. The towel’s pattern is definitely my style and I love everything Tarte. As a ginger in the deep south, more sunscreen is always appreciated. While the tumbler is not my style, my 3 year old will love it. The matches…well…at least they’ll get used.

    • agreed. this is by far their best box since February, if it goes on sale I’ll snatch it up but Im not dying to have it.

      • I agree. If it’s on sale, it’s mine. But otherwise it’s for others to enjoy at full price.

  2. I can use everything in here so for me it’s a win! I’m excited for the towel, it’s my style. The mascara is super usefull for outdoor activities because it won’t budge even in the heat. Sunscreen is always useful. Not my favorite tumbler design from ban do but hey it will work. And like someone else here said the matches will be great for reaching down into candles. And the smoked gouda crackers sound yummy.

  3. I’m not a fan of the “hero” items (towel/tumbler) but everything else looks really good.

  4. If I were to have tried to guess the box/item that would finally get me to hit the cancel button, I’d never have thought ” a box of matches in a box that say California” but there it is. Ah well, I’d had many months of that lingering feeling that this box is just not for me/my tastes/my lifestyle….good to finally acknowledge it. That being said, my account says my box is processing so I may have cancelled too late. At least the crackers look good.

Back to matches…isn’t it a little risky to be shipping a box of matches in cardboard box in the middle of the summer?

    • Regarding the matches, it is near impossible. Matches can combust at a high temp but your whole box would be on fire already because paper burns at same temp. Like over 450 degrees. I suppose it depends on if they are safety matches or not that require enough friction from the sulfur in the match head and the red phosphorous on the striking pad. As the striking pad is red from what I can see, they are likely safety matches.

      • Are you a science teacher? Being serious here. I felt dumber just by reading your response. LOL

    • The items that got me to finally cancel was the straws and starbucks drink from the last box.

This box doesn’t look all that bad to me, but I already have all this stuff. I’m starting to think that everyone reaches their limit with the subscription boxes. We can only have so many bottles / tumblers, beach blankets, and mascaras!

    • That’s a bummer. I really dislike subscriptions that have weird dates you have to cancel by.
If anyone would like to cancel I read the details and they require cancellations before the 23rd of the month. Glossybox does the same darn thing. At least POPSUGAR must have’s $10 off coupon for new subscribers is offered to us before that cancelation cut off date so it is possible to order your subscription with the coupon and still cancel prior to the deadline date 7/22 so you don’t have to purchase the August box if you just wanted to try it one month. Glossy is notorious for flash sales that put you after the cancellation date so if you sign up with the special flash coupon sale they already have you roped into the next months subscription box. So I really appreciate that POPSUGAR doesn’t play hard ball that badly.

  5. I would have been happy about the cup, but I discovered Walmart’s knock off of the yeti cup and it keeps drinks cold so long it is like magic. Magic I tell you!

Anyway….hated everything in last month’s box, so this is better. I’ll use the towel, and can gift the cup a a friend’s tween daughter.

I’ll give the mascara another shot, based on Liz’s tip. (shiseido perfect oil makeup remover FTW)

Very happy about a quality, light weight sunscreen.

  6. I am rolling my eyes. This and June are bad boxes for me. Summer boxes aren’t for me. I’ll use the towel. I wish I could find the time to list my items on swap again, because otherwise they are just gathering dust.

    • Donate?

    • I’d love to swap, Mary Beth! If you decide to do it please message me. I’ve left my swap page info in case you find the time! Thanks.

      • Alicia, if you would like to swap for the full June box, let me know! I have it on my swaps.

  7. I don’t really see the correlation with most of the items and the theme, but this looks like a great box! I had cancelled after a few boxes where I had more items piling up than what I was using, but I just re-subscribed to get this box!

    • I thought the same. Fireflies? Fireworks? I’m probably missing something, but I don’t see the correlation.

      • Yeah – I’m bummed that there is nothing related to fireflies and fireworks. Those were the 2 keywords that jumped out to me.

Think it’s amusing to get matches as a bonfire correlation. (And I’m happy to have more matches. Not something to get excited about, but nice to have more & the inclusion made me giggle.)

  8. I saw this and immediately logged in and cancelled my sub. I am back on full price after the promo I’m subbed with ran out, and I’m now swapping more than I keep every month.

They’re going to have to offer a reeeeeally good coupon and even better spoiler to get me back again until mid-fall.

    • I did too! Saw box contents, logged on and cancelled. I saw someone post a possible spoiler of a smores kit…that would have been cute. The matches are a big miss for me and while i like sunscreen I actually doubt I would use a mousse formulation. The only cute item is the towel but I have their towel from last years summer box. I might put this entire box up for sale.

      • Yes! A s’mores kit would’ve been perfect in this box… or at least the inclusion of components of it anyways. Bummer

    • Watch for the GILT CITY half price sales to pick up a box if you like it. Nice thing about ordering through the GILT CITY Special offer is it’s just a one time Box. You don’t have to worry about when to cancel.

  9. Not exciting but unlike many boxes I can actually use all the items. For $20 it’s good but not if I paid more..

  10. Oddly, I actually like this box quite a lot. The only items I wouldn’t use is probably the tumbler and only because I’m not a huge fan of the design.

    • I thought the same thing. I stil might use the tumbler since it is double insulated. I’ll prolly keep the ugly sucker in my car for water in the go.

  11. Question: do you all buy a box, then cancel and resubscribe when another spoiler sparks your interest?

Popsugar is ALL over the place and st $500 a year I don’t think its worth the risk. There doesn’t appear to be any target audiance. May’s box seemed to be an older demographic- some items were too mature for me. While June’s was very young… I mean a trucker hat? Those haven’t been a thing in years, and certainly aren’t a thing for a 30 something professional. This box is in the middle, the towel touches a pretty wide demographic but the cup? It looks like a kids cup or a man’s cup. Not every box is going to suit me, but this one seems to inconsitant to suit anyone all of the time.

this was my first pop sugar box. I wanted to try the towel, and the rest was free essentially. No complaints here. Nothing else that excites me other than the towel, and the chips.

    • I subscribed with the Black Friday 6 months deal. The December 2016-May 2017 boxes were mostly age-appropriate and nice items for me (mid 20s). I cancelled after the black friday deal ended because I knew from looking at last year’s summer boxes that the Popsugar summer boxes were not as good. Summer themes have more room for wacky/out-there items like the trucker hat and this month’s tumbler and matchsticks.

      • I’ll have to keep that in mind for the future.

    • As a 52 year old, I can say that with the exception of maybe the lipstick, the May items didn’t appeal to old people. They were just boring. 🙂

    • You could always put the items that don’t interest you up on the swope page.

  12. I really like the contents of the box. That being said I wouldn’t spend the $40.

I bought the splashes mascara on Sephora and returned it. Its not worth the 23 in opposite to the non waterproof version thats worth every penny in my opinion.

Is the box goes for 50% sale I would buy it as I need the towel.

Im very disaapointed in the snacks selections for this year. That used to be the main reason I sub…

    • Have you looked on the swope page to see if you can pick up the towel. Or you could even check eBay. Hopefully this box will be available through GILT CITY 50% off deal. BTW i haven’t ever tried the mascara in either formula. Can you please tell me why you like the regular and what about the waterproof you don’t like. I only ask because I love mascara and I’m always looking to find new favs.

  13. Can’t afford this right now, but would love to buy it if it goes on sale! The mascara, sunscreen and towel are my hero items from here, and I think fireplace matches are cool! Great way to start a grill without worrying about getting burnt lol.

    • Yep that and yard fire pits.

  14. I like a few things in the box enough that if it goes on sale for 50% off I will buy it. Seems lately you just have to sit back and wait, and if it doesn’t .., oh well!

    • do pop sugar boxes go on sale? I haven’t seen that before. I would buy a seconf on sale… just bc I really like the towel and the box costs less than the towel!

      • last month’s went on sale for 50% off

they can also show up on RueLaLa after a few months for a discounted price

        • Thought the one that went on sale was the Limited Edition Summer Box?

          • They both did on 27th, I believe. I bought both. Then the LE went on sale again.

      • Sign up for gilt city emails. They run half price sales for selected POPSUGAR boxes. Plus when you purchase via GILT CITY you don’t have to worry about canceling a subscription cuz it’s a one time purchase.

  15. Glad I didn’t renew my sub. This looks like another terrible box for me, I hated June and this one is just as bad. PS is so hit and miss for me, I probably won’t sub again too many items become albatrosses you can’t give away.

  16. I’m excited for everything except the tumbler! Yay!

  17. If I was still a monthly subscriber, I’d be happy with this box — I think it’s all pretty summery/cute (except the tumbler but it’s a useful beach item). That being said, I think I’ll wait to swap/get it on sale. It just doesn’t seem worth it anymore to spend $35/$40 to get it first. Popsugar seems to have practically all items for sale later on. There seem to be fewer and fewer must-have items that are hard to find on the swap site.

It seems to be the general trend that it’s harder and harder for sub boxes to find the right items at the right price point. (Except maybe the quarterly boxes which seem to have more flexibility.) $40 for $130 of products sounds great, but if you’re spending $500 a year on a subscription, people expect to feel excited about almost every box. This is especially true since some of the best discounts (or highest inflation) come from brands that a lot of subscription boxes use. I feel like so many people are suffering from sub-box fatigue, and it’s hard to find things to continue to excite people. Especially because there’s a split between trendy young things that would be easy to not repeat (the dreaded swan was sooooo in season at the time), and more mature audiences that can actually afford these little luxuries!

    • Sub fox fatigue! Couldn’t have described it better.

  18. If I got this box, I would keep everything except the turkish towel! I don’t have a use for it – but I love the matches (I would put those on top of my fireplace…and I live in CA). The mascara looks fantastic. I always need sunscreen for the 3 of us in this house. The snack sounds yummy. We’d find a use for the cup, but it’s pretty cheesy.

    • Ariana, let’s swap! I’ll take your towel, give you my matches and throw something else in the mix. Contact me mthsieg at gmaildotcom
      Thanks!

  19. Cheap tumber? Matches? More Tarte mascara that seems to be the filler item in many boxes these days (I’ve lost track of how many tubes of this stuff I have now).

I don’t know what to say other than I’m going to think twice before getting another Black Friday, multi-month sub deal later this year. That’s the ONLY reason I haven’t cancelled after the past few boxes have been pretty sub-par for me.

    • You can cancel even if you still have credits from BF. Someone else mentioned it a month or so ago and I cancelled back them but my credits run through November.

I’m not sure I would renew even if there was another deal like last BF and I didn’t want to have to keep track of the expiration date. If I do decide to renew, I’m sure they can figure out a way to set it up so I don’t have overlapping months if they want my money.

  20. I am pretty happy about this combo! Towel and mascara for mommy, cute cup for my 6 year old (that will look pretty cool with his Billabong trucker hat), cheesy crunchies for the toddlers, and sunscreen for all of us! My popsugar boxes are a family affair lol

    • Lol, I think that’s pretty awesome!

  21. I’m so excited for the towel and the sunscreen! My college student daughter will be thrilled to receive the cup and mascara for back to school. I’m very pleased 😁

  22. Liz does the ‘escape’ pillow match the towel? They look like the same color.

  23. The California-themed matches gave me a bit of a chill; aren’t thousands of people fleeing active wildfires in CA right now?

    • …it’s a subscription. With an item made by a Cali company. That they plan months ahead of time. I wouldn’t think of it too much.

  24. That towel looks amazing and soft. I would love those matches to light my candles that are burnt down to almost the end. I have always wanted to try Liz’s fav mascara and sunscreen is so perfect this time of year. I wish there was a pic to see how foamy it is. I didn’t get this box but if it goes on sale I will!

  25. I am mentally composing my perfect mystery box- trucker hat, cheese snacks, tarte mascara…

    • Don’t hate on the cheese crackers. They look delicious.

      • They are. My grocery store had small sample packs a few months ago and they are fantastic (especially with a glass of wine!). And I don’t normally buy crackers…

        • Oh yes these are fantastic. Def don’t hate on the cheese crackers! Although… the smoked gouda flavor is easily my least favorite of the three kinds that Snyder’s makes.

  26. I’m happy with the box even if I don’t like Tarte mascara (still a great item to include in any sub box!) and I don’t care for tumblers. The only real slight disappointment is for some reason I really wanted some chocolate in this box and a beach tent 😉

    • I’m so glad there is no chocolate in this box. I live in Texas and the only time you can send chocolate without it melting is between November and February.

    • A beach tent would have been fun.

  27. After the towel/blanket this just goes downhill for me…

  28. Now, I know what will be included in their upcoming mystery boxes already LOLLLL Oh god, last time they included some tooth floss and this time is some matches. Next time will be what? Some kleenex hand towels? Sorry PSMH, I’m out !

    • I loved the floss. Hands down the best floss I’ve ever used. Glad we got it on Popsugar or I never would have known the brand existed.

      • I agree, Judy. That floss was one of the few sub box items I’ve ever repurchased. Best floss ever. I like practical items in boxes bc at least they’ll get used.

  29. If you need to use a golf ball size amount per arm, how many uses would you estimate to be in the sunscreen bottle?

    • Mousse is light and airy. Think of how long a can of hair mousse lasts.

    • I tried this product and loved it–but didn’t buy it as I figured out I would need to buy a new can every 4 weeks. Otherwise, its a really good sunscreen…

  30. Have you tried using oil to remove the mascara? I’ve found that it works really well for me. I use rice bran oil, but I’m guessing you could use other oils. I get my face and eyelashes wet, rub the oil on my lashes, and then wipe it away.

    • Coconut oil!

    • I only use oil! You shouldn’t have to get them wet first. I think it has really helped my eyelashes -they are far longer and healthier too.

  31. SO glad I didn’t jump the gun after the spoiler.

  32. I wish PopSugar did not have a theme for each box. This is a pretty good box and I am happy with it. However, because of their theme, I was getting super stoked for some kind of Smores product (snack, candle, notepad) and am so bummed out. For fireflies, I was hoping for a little outdoor strand of LED lights for my patio! Or even a glittery banner. If there *wasn’t* a theme for this box, I would be so much happier. I wish they would stop with the themes because it leads to higher expectations and more disappointment. Again, I’m happy to get this box and I like the products inside, but I find myself longing for the things I was wishing could have been in it based in their hints!

    • I couldn’t agree more! I was stoked about some smores or items that made me think “beach bonfire”. LED lights would have been great!! But alas, I got my hopes up and now I am disappointed.

I also hate how late these boxes are getting. I see a full review WAAAAAAAY before I even get a tracking number. smh.

    • I know, I hate the whole theme thing. Unnecessary especially since every theme is a stretch.

      • And what was with the Boycharm “Cherry” theme and absolutely nothing was cherry, and the photos included a bag shaped like a strawberry. Bizarre

  33. So glad I canceled my sub last month! No box envy at all!

    • Same!!!

  34. For the first time ever, I actually want to buy a second one. I love this box!

    • Me too!!!

  35. Meh… maybe the towel will be okay, and I’m interested in the mascara (although I’m satisfied with the kind I use, and don’t like working too hard to remove it). I’m satisfied with the value I’m getting vs what I paid, but not super thrilled about any of this stuff. I’m glad to see Tarte have full-sized items in boxes lately, though (with a palette in the Boxycharm box coming up).

On the other hand, if you even sort of like these Wholey Cheese crackers, the swiss and black pepper are THE BEST. It’s still hard to find them in a lot of stores, though…

  36. I love the towel and the tumbler would definitely get used but the rest is not really for me. The Tarte mascara flakes off my lashes…funny how everyone’s lashes are different. Thanks for the review – I was literally about to purchase after receiving the Ban.do email and this saved me $40.

  37. I just got their email about including a Ban.Do product and was hoping for a cooler bag or fun float for my kids – the tumbler is very whomp whomp. A s’mores flavored snack would have made more sense. Also, where are fireflies represented here? This was my first Popsugar box, and I’m happy to have the towel and Tarte mascara, and I’ll use the matches and sunscreen, I guess. But I think I’ll be canceling after this one.

    • It does give the feel that it is a floatie!
I just got it, and with all those little fruits images similar to the floaties they have, i thought it might be one, sigh…

  38. You had me at Turkish towel but I am super stoked over everything. Win here for me. I can’t wait to try a really good water proof mascara. Otherwise in the summer I look like B rated horror film.

  39. I hope this on goes on 50% off sale like June’s did!!! I’ll snatch one up in a heartbeat if it does!

    • Yesss I would too ! I love ban do but they have such cuter stuff than that cup . I feel popsugar could have done better with that . I love the towel though ❤️

  40. I like this box a lot! Nothing is a “wow” but I will use it all except the sunscreen most likely.

  41. Great review! I am SUPER excited for this box!!! <3 Can't wait to try out the sunscreen and mascara (so rare to get a waterproof version in a box)! Also, I'm really looking forward to the towel, especially after hearing it's a bit thicker than the standard turkish towel. YAY!!

  42. I bought this one because I liked the towel and will use everything else, so it’s a good one for me. But I still don’t like enough of their boxes to get them monthly anymore. I think I get maybe 2 a year if that. February 2016 is still one of my favorites.

  43. I couldn’t agree more that this is a super disappointing box. The turkish towel is nice, but the tumbler looks cheap. And to try to tease with s’mores only to get matches????? I sure am glad I canceled a few months back. Until they turn this back around, I’m out.

    • You are already out, right? I mean you cancelled months ago. So you are saying you cancel again based on this box you aren’t getting?

      • my laugh for the day……i really am lol

      • She is probably like me, I bought several months at a time and canceled but still have a few boxes to go before my sub ends.

  44. Is it weird that I’m most excited about the cheese crackers? lol Seriously though, an all-around good box. I’m a little underwhelmed by the matches (though the box is gorgeous) and the tumbler (would prefer it without the saying). Can’t wait to try the mascara and the sunscreen mousse. And the towel is beautiful and useful—my favorite combination.

  45. Matches?

    I just have no words.

  46. I really didn’t want to look at spoilers because this will be my first *real* PopSugar box to be a surprise (I bought last month’s from someone else). But I have no self-control, so here I am, and other than the matches, I love it! I’m obsessed with tumblers so I’m happy to add another to my collection. The towel is amazing. The mascara is my all-time favorite. I’m excited to try the sunscreen, and the cheese chips look delicious. I’m really glad I subscribed! Now I’ve just got to wait for my box to ship!

    • *and I wanted it to be a surprise. I left out a couple words there. Whoops.

  47. This one is okay for me….I’m excited for the turkish towel, and interested in the mascara, since I don’t have a waterproof one right now, and I can always use more tumblers for work. But what’s with the matches??? Random

  48. Not one single thing………….. 🙁 Bummer, maybe next month.

  49. im loving this box! thanks for the review!

  50. I allllmost bought this box. Once again, I have avoided complete disappointment.

    • Same – the Turkish towel was a good spoiler, I love summer themed boxes and I thought the “theme words” sounded really great, so I had serious FOMO. I’m glad I didn’t jump.

I know everyone always comments that their theme words are always far fetched, but I think these ones are way out there. “Bonfire” I was thinking of for the food item, maybe some nice gourmet graham crackers or chocolate – but matchsticks? Or do the matchsticks go with “fireworks” (which would have been great with maybe some nail decals or even make the tumbler sparkly red, white, blue)? Perhaps the mascara fits the fireworks theme with its name? Sand I get is the towel. “Fireflies” I don’t know PSMH, you’ve stumped me there.

      It’s really misleading IMO.
