BuffBoxx May 2017 Fitness Subscription Box

BuffBoxx for Women
5 overall rating
3 Ratings | 0 Reviews

BuffBoxx is a fitness subscription box for men or women. All products are premium and name brand, and a portion of each box sold goes to charity (you can choose one of the several charities at sign-up).

Please note: this box arrived about two weeks later than usual, but BuffBoxx was very communicative with subscribers about what was going on. There was an issue with stock of the Reebok apparel for the women’s boxes and we received several email updates on the delay. I appreciated the openness and honesty.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This review is of the Women's BuffBoxx, $49.99 a month, box.

Merkury Innovations Waterproof Bluetooth Shower Speaker – Value $11.99?

I believe this item has been discontinued as I can only find it actually available on eBay. I have listed the value here from Overstock.com, where it is out of stock (but at least there was a price). This speaker gets mixed reviews and I am, unfortunately, unable to test it because I don’t have a smartphone or tablet (or any desire to listen to music in the shower…). I know someone this will be perfect for, though.

Tiger Balm Pain Relieving Patch – Value $1.46 (buy a package of 5 patches for $7.29)

I have heard of Tiger Balm before (thanks, daytime television!) but this is my first time using it. The active ingredients in this patch are camphor and menthol (standard for patches like this) and capsicum extract (i.e., capsaicin, the hot stuff in hot peppers). I tried this on my lower back and it was sort of tingly (I am sensitive to menthol) but didn’t do a lot for pain. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t work for you – I have not had much luck at all these past few years with topical pain relief products, but I know people who swear by them (and they used to work for me).

Promotional BuffBoxx Cup

Coupons for Halo Top Ice Cream

I’m not assigning values to these items. You’ll always get a promotional item of some sort from BuffBoxx. They are doing a good job of mixing it up. There have been lanyards, sticky notes, a magnetic calendar, and more, without any repeats. This month it was a plastic cup.

There were also two coupons for Halo Top Ice Cream. This is a low sugar, relatively low-calorie ice cream with added protein. I don’t typically count coupons towards the cost of a box (and it is possible I was meant to get one instead of two, as they were not close together in the box at all). This product is allegedly sold at Publix and Whole Foods, both of which I shop at weekly, so I will probably try to redeem the coupons.

Reebok Elements Marble Tank in Chalk – Value $25

With this version of BuffBoxx, you’ll get Reebok apparel pretty much every month. This month, it was this tank. I rather like that it has a higher neckline, which is something that I don’t see often in tanks from fitness subscription boxes. It is also a lot more lightweight in person than it looks in the photo, so it is good for summer. Also, BuffBoxx lets you choose XS shirts (not every box goes down that far in size) so it actually fits pretty well!

Isopasta High Protein Low Carb Fusilli (7.05 oz) – Value $8.99

If you are doing the low carb thing and want pasta, this is one way to go, I suppose (it incorporates soy protein, pea protein, and whey protein while being low in calories, fat, and carbs). I prefer to do the high carb thing and eat whole wheat pasta a couple of times a week. As it happens, last night was a pasta night and we used this. And, the texture of this is most generously described as “interesting” which is not surprising since the cooking time is listed as 30 minutes (!). I appreciate the exposure to a new product and new brand, but I think I am going to stick with grain-based products. (Note: this contains dairy and egg ingredients so it is not vegan.)

Eflow BCAA Endure in Warrior Gummy Bear (10 servings) – Value $13.33 (buy a 30-serving jar for $39.99)

It has been awhile since I received a BCAA (branched chain amino acid) powder in a subscription box. This is a type of product I use every day and I already knew I liked this one because I’ve received samples of it before. This is caffeine free and doesn’t have any odd ingredients (i.e., nothing I had to look up). I actually drink this while I work out as it is more interesting than plain water. I strongly suggest trying it at half strength first as I tend to find products like this a bit strong, flavor-wise. BCAAs are good at helping with delayed onset muscle soreness and muscle rebuilding after workouts.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $60.77 for the May BuffBoxx. Although this is not the highest value I’ve ever seen for this box, it is comfortably above the cost of the box. Please also note that I did not include the value of the ice cream coupon(s) in my calculation. Overall, this was a solid box. I’m excited about the BCAA supplement, the tank will be great for summer workouts, the speaker will make a good gift, and I do appreciate the chance to try the pasta, even if I didn’t end up liking it a whole lot.
