The box included a letter reminding us that subscribers can buy more of the box items for $1 online.  The back of the letter included a list of items in the box.

A note on prices: Items like this can come from a variety of different suppliers at many price points depending on how many you buy, etc.  I couldn’t find a lot of these exact beads from common sources (e.g., Fire Mountain Gems) and it’s of questionable value to pick something similar because a slight difference in grading or size or material and you are looking at half or double the price (or an even greater difference).  Even different colors of the same size and shape of glass beads are priced differently due to materials needed to make the colors!

3 mm Matte Light Topaz Czech Firepolished Beads

3 mm Chartreuse Czech Firepolished Beads

3 mm Matte Medium Sapphire Czech Firepolished Beads

3 mm Ruby Marea Czech Firepolished Beads

There’s not a ton to say about these. You know in advance with this subscription that you will get four strands of 3 mm Czech firepolished beads; only the color will vary from month to month. This is a good basic type of bead to have on hand and you will have quite a collection after a few months. My favorites of the 3mm ones are the bottom strand. I love the finish.

4 mm Matte Plum AB Czech Firepolished Beads

4 mm Metallic Dark Bronze Czech Firepolished Beads

4 mm Crystal Half Travertine Czech Firepolished Beads

4 mm Lava Red Czech Firepolished Beads

You are also guaranteed to get four strands of 4 mm Czech firepolished beads. You are not necessarily guaranteed that there will be any kind of coordinating color scheme, but I find that you can make matches if you hang on to a few months’ worth.  I like the variety of finish options provided.

Here is a bracelet I made with some of the 4 mm beads. It ended up being longer than I expected and it actually fits around my neck. I am pleased to report that I have figured out how to properly attach clasps to this bracelet style, as well…

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for the August 2016 Dollar Bead Bag, for reasons explained above. This is one of those subscriptions where you know in advance what you are going to get each month (only the color is a surprise). It works out to $1 per strand, and I think that is reasonable. These strands are a little shorter than what you’d get at Fire Mountain Gems, for example, but the prices are also lower.  This is a good subscription if you are looking to build your stash.

Please note that no directions are given and you have to supply your own needles, stringing materials, tools, and findings.

What did you think of the August 2016 Dollar Bead Bag? Do you subscribe to any beading or craft boxes?
