There wasn’t a traditional information card with this box but there was a card with a link to find out more about the items in the box.
WOW Baking Company Snickerdoodle (2.75 oz) – Value $1.99
This was delicious and had an awesome (soft and non-gritty) texture, which is hard to achieve for a gluten free cookie. It had 360 calories so I split it with my husband, though.
Chai Diaries Lychee Blooming Tea (7 count) – Value $14
This is a flower tea (see below). I like flower teas! It has a fruity flavor that is definitely noticeable, and a little different, because lychee is not a regular part of my diet, but this was a fun one to try out, for sure. (I am not 100% sure which of the items in the list on the page I linked to this is, but they all cost the same. Each ball can be used to brew two pots of tea.)
I used my glass teapot for the flower. These “bloom” in hot water and look so neat afterwards. It would’ve been a little better in a taller vessel, because the white part at the top actually floats up a bit.
Misty Peak Teas Rolled Pu Er Tea (3 rolls) – Value $9
This is a Chinese style tea. Although the rolls of tea resemble the flowers up above, they are not flower teas (as you will see below). It is an earthy favor that is less bitter than many of the other Chinese teas I’ve tried lately. Pu Er tea is fermented in the solid state and the flavor really depends on how it is processed and stored. (This would be a good one to start with if you are new to Pu Er!)
The other thing to note is, you can rebrew these tea leaves quite a few times (the Misty Peak site says 25-30) so you are getting a lot of value in these three little rolls.
Here is the brewed tea. I like the full leaves. I should’ve brewed this with the mesh basket that came with my teapot. Well, there is always a next time. (As an aside, I see at least four other subscription box items in the background of this picture…)
Sencha Naturals Sugar Free Green Tea Mints in Pink Dragonfruit – Value $4
Sencha Naturals Green Tea Mints Sweetened with Coconut Sugar in Cardamom Cinnamon – Value $2.52
If you are a subscriber to Yuzen Box, you will be familiar with these. I like them a lot, though, so I am happy to have more. The pink dragonfruit ones are a longtime favorite, and the cardamom cinnamon ones are new to me. I think the green tea included in them is a nice touch – lots of antioxidants, plus green tea is good at freshening the breath.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $31.51 for the August Tea Box Express. That is several dollars over the cost of the box and, outside of the Sencha mints, all of these products and brands were completely new to me. I like experimenting with different teas and will try anything from really strong, plain Chinese green teas to elaborately flavored Western-style teas, so I was happy with the tea selections for this month, as well.
