April’s theme is “Pizza.”
Hamptons Lane includes a booklet that details all of the items included in the box.
The booklet also provides recipes and cooking tips.
Epicurean Pizza Peel- $30
Epicurean products are made using 100% wood fiber (the same stuff used in skate parks), an incredibly durable material that’s dishwasher and high-heat safe.
The pizza cutter is engineered to be skin-safe but still sharp enough to cut through pizza crust.
The peel can be used to remove hot pizza from the oven, and there’s no need to transfer the pizza before serving- you can slice directly on the wood fiber.
Antimo Caputo 00 Flour (2.2 lb.)- $7.54
Tipo 00 flour “is finely milled, high-protein flour with a powdery texture.” It’s often difficult to find in the US, but it’s widely regarded as the best flour to use for making Neapolitan-style pizza dough.
Scarpetta Pizza Sauce (15.8 oz.)- $10
Scarpetta uses only tomatoes, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, fresh organic oregano, and salt & pepper in their “fresh from the garden” pizza sauce. It’s gluten free and contains no preservatives.
Italian Seasoning from RawSpiceBar- $6
Red Star Active Dry Yeast- $0.45
Hamptons Lane included a packet of yeast in this box, as well as a custom Italian spice blend from RawSpiceBar. The spice blend is a mix of garlic, black pepper, sun dried tomato, onion, oregano, basil, cayenne pepper, fennel, rosemary, and thyme.
I would eat pizza every single day if I could, so I jumped at the opportunity to try out one of Hamptons Lane’s pizza recipes! (These recipes can be found on the Hamptons Lane Website.)
I began by making pizza dough! The recipe was provided by Roberta’s Pizza in Brooklyn, New York and it incorporates both Typico 00 and all purpose flour.
When the dough was proofed and ready, I stretched it out by hand and constructed my pie.
Hamptons Lane had some excellent recipe inspiration for this box, and (after drooling over all of their suggestions for toppings) I decided to top my pizza with Scarpetta sauce, mozzarella, fresh basil, green olives, and salami.
I turned up my oven as hot as it would go, and baked the pizza until the cheese started to brown and bubble, about 13 minutes.
I waited for the pizza to cool slightly, and then cut it using the Epicurean wood fiber cutter. I’m pleased to report that it worked like a charm!
I finished the pizza with some black pepper and a sprinkle of the Italian seasoning, and it was SO GOOD. The seasoning had a nice, surprising kick of heat, and I really enjoyed the Scarpetta sauce. I also really liked the pizza crust recipe. It had an excellent, chewy texture- the recipe is definitely a keeper!
Verdict: I love everything to do with pizza, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this month’s Hamptons Lane box. The sauce and Italian seasoning are both delicious, quality items, and I’ll definitely put the pizza peel and cutter to good use. I do have to say that I found the addition of yeast to be a little odd. (I don’t usually expect to see inexpensive and easy to find grocery store items in a Hamptons Lane box.) The box also felt a little lighter than usual, but the value is definitely there. The retail value of the items in this box comes in at just over $74, which is great considering the $47 cost of the box.
