Seapoint Farms Crunchy Coated Premium Black Edamame (3.5 oz)- $2.83
I’ve never tried black edamame before, so I was excited to see this product in my Urthbox. Black edamame is sweeter than the more common green, and I really like the sweet crunchy beans and their salty coating.
Natural Hemp Hearts by Manitoba Harvest (.5 oz)- $.75
I was drowning in Hemp Hearts a couple of months ago (they were in lots of food sub boxes back in March). I think I’ve finally worked through my supply, so I’m happy to receive some more. Three tablespoons provides 10 g of protein, so they’re a good way to help add protein to your diet. I like to sprinkle them on homemade yogurt parfaits!
Pretzel Perfection Lemon Toffee Twice-Baked Pretzel Sticks (1 oz)- $1.99
These gluten-free pretzels are coated in toffee and baked with lemon and rosemary. They’re salty and a little sweet, a combination I usually love, but there’s something about the combination of flavors here that isn’t quite working for me.
Keenwah Chocolate Sea Salt Quinoa Clusters (1 oz)- $1.49
I tried Keenwah Quinoa Puffs recently in another subscription box, and I thought they were interesting. These clusters are pretty good, too, though I think they could use just a touch more sea salt. The flavor is good, but I think a tiny bit more salt would complement the chocolate and better bring out the nutty flavor of the quinoa.
Cocoa Loco Dark Chocolate Chia-Oat Clusters by Nourish Snacks (1.2 oz)- $2
Unfortunately, this product melted a little bit en route to me. It’s still tasty, though! The chocolate clusters are crunchy and very chocolaty, and I think this is exactly what I would think of if someone told me to imagine “dessert granola”.
Very Berry Kale Rawr Bar (.49 oz)- $1.42
I’m a fan of fruit leather, and I like that Rawr Bar crafts flavors with a mix of fruit and veggies. This bar (Very Berry Kale) is green-ish brown in color, and the kale flavor is definitely at the forefront taste-wise. There’s sweetness from the berries, too, but I doubt this bar would appeal to veggie-averse kids. I’m a fan of it, though, and I’m curious about their other flavors. I’m a huge fan of beets, so I’m going to keep an eye out for their Beet-a-Peel (beet + citrus) bar.
Detour Salted Caramel Cookie Dough Bar (1.1 oz)- $1.22
This non-GMO and gluten free whey protein bar is fairly low in sugar (4 g) and provides a healthy dose of protein (10 g). I’m not sure it tastes like cookie dough to me, but the layer of salted caramel does make it feel a little decadent.
Verdict: I’m pleased to see that this month’s Urthbox is a step up from last month's. I like the variety of products I received this month, and the snacks were pretty tasty. For the mini box I received, the cost per month is either $19 (with a month-to-month subscription) or $9 (with an annual subscription). The value this month comes in at almost $12 (which is double the value of last month’s box). Still, I think it’s odd to see such drastic swings in value from month to month, and I’m concerned by the number of complaints about Urthbox customer service I’ve seen in the comments section on past reviews. While I enjoy the majority of snacks I receive from Urthbox, I’m not sure I feel comfortable recommending it at this time.
