FYI - Play! by Sephora box subscriptions have ended. April 2020 will be the final box:

After years of helping you discover new brands and try the buzziest products, PLAY! is ending to make room for something even better. Thank you for letting us into your lives (and your mailbox). We hope you found some new favorite products and learned a few tips and tricks along the way. Goodbyes are never easy, but we promise you’ll love what we have in store for you next.

If you’re a subscriber with questions about this change, be sure to check out our FAQs for more information.

From the FAQS:

Q: When is the last PLAY! by SEPHORA box?

A: The final PLAY! by SEPHORA subscription box will be this month (April 2020). We’re looking forward to introducing new and exciting ways for our clients to discover brands within the growing Sephora Favorites category, giving them more beauty choices than before.

Q: What are you replacing PLAY! by SEPHORA with?

A: We are expanding the Sephora Favorites kit program with additional ways to discover brands that fit your needs.

  • Sephora Favorites LUXE box is the first new launch of the program. Available April 28 on sephora.com for $25.
  • Clients can expect two additional lines under this new program, launching later this year. Stay tuned! You can review all current Sephora Favorites kits here.

Q: When does the PLAY! by SEPHORA subscription end?

A: April is the last box you will receive as part of the PLAY! by SEPHORA program. Once your April payment has been processed, you will not receive any additional charges for your PLAY! by SEPHORA subscription. The Sephora Favorites LUXE set is the first launch of the new program and will be available on April 28 on Sephora.com for $25. For more information on all current Sephora Favorites offerings, visit here.

H3. Will Sephora ever bring back the PLAY! boxes/another subscription service? A: We do not have plans at this time to launch another subscription program.

Q: Why are you launching the new Favorites Kits in the middle of coronavirus?

A: We know that having a sense of community during this challenging time is more important than ever, and we hope to find new ways to meet our clients where they are. We are all in this together, and with greater value and more choice, we believe the Favorites sets have something for everyone to enjoy.

Q: Are the PLAY! by SEPHORA boxes/Favorites sets safe to order during coronavirus?

A: Yes. We make sure that all products meet safety standards before they are shipped. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures.

Q: Did you cancel the PLAY! program because of coronavirus?

A: No. Sephora is ending the PLAY! by SEPHORA subscription box program to make room for new ways to discover brands with Sephora Favorites sets, giving clients more beauty choices than before. We will be launching three new sets, starting with our LUXE set on April 28.

Q: Why did only some subscribers get an extra sample in their box?

A: An extra sample was provided to long-time subscribers of the PLAY! by SEPHORA program, as a small thank you for their loyalty.

Q: Why am I unable to subscribe to the PLAY! program, but you’re still selling old boxes? Are these products old/expired?

A: No. The PLAY! boxes currently for sale have some of our clients’ favorites and are the last chance to get these offerings before we retire the program.

Couldn’t find it… 🙁

I canceled long ago. It wasn’t the size of the samples that were a problem for me. It was only $10.00. It was the repetition and the entire boxes that weren’t suited to your profile.
I hope they come up with something better because I love Sephora.

I saw your comments! Thanks for the spoilers

That was a surprising email to receive (IMO), but I’m okay with it. I was getting frustrated with the curation, too. I’ve been a subscriber since the beginning and eventually I was sad to be getting so many repeats (glowstarter primer, Kat Von D eyeliner, etc.). The point of subscription boxes, to me, is to have variety and the chance to try new things. Yet it was pretty apparent Sephora wasn’t putting a lot of thought into providing a chance to try new items, and instead throwing in whatever overstock of samples/100 pt. rewards they’ve had on hand. But for 10 bucks and change I was okay with continuing.

I am curious about the blurb above in the FAQs stating long-standing members are receiving an extra sample. Is this in reference to the final April box? Does anyone know?

I’m glad they’re going to try something bigger and hopefully better. I’ve been a long time subscriber subscriber play (as well as a few other subs) and like everyone else I’ve gotten a lot of products i’d never use or want to try. Yet that’s part of the point of these boxes. Isn’t it? To try new products you normally wouldn’t? But when they’re were products that i didn’t like or would work with my hair, skin, etc. I’d save them in a tote for about 6 months and then pull out my ipsy makeup bags i didn’t like and make a bunch of beauty care bags and bring them to the local shelters. There’s always someone who can use what you don’t like in your boxes and the products I’ve discovered thanks to these boxes (especially the high priced items) has really been a godsend to some of my skin and hair needs.

I left them and Ipsy a LONG time ago…..the bags were repetitive. The samples were super tiny! Now I’m a hardcore Boxycharm girl. I’ve done Allure as well. They were good but the samples got a little repetitive also. Prefer to spend a little more on items that are bigger.

well all I got after 6 months was repeats…maybe if they went to 15.00 a month..and gave 5 bigger products this may have worked..oh well, see ya later..

I quit this when it was fairly new. I kept getting samples of things I would never use, I seem to recall a lot of bronzer and self-tanner, and the same types of things (though not repeats) month after month, so I sent them a message with some feedback (not rude) and their response was basically “get lost if you don’t like it” so I left.

In the meantime I have had some other negative experiences with Sephora online ordering (like they discontinued my foundation, let me order it anyway, then substituted a random shade for the one I needed, and I couldn’t cancel the order even minutes later, so I had to go to a store to return it once the package arrived) and another time they just canceled the main thing I had ordered without explanation and sent the smaller thing I didn’t care about so much but had just ordered to get free shipping. Basically just bad inventory management and poor communication on more than one occasion.

So now I don’t shop there anymore. (A couple of years ago I hit Rouge by April so this is a change.)

I think we will be seeing alot of sub boxes ending over the next few months unfortunately.

Reply ButtonReply

Melissa

Not surprising based on all of the leftovers that go sale. I’m actually excited because hopefully this mean they are coming out with more luxe or a better version of play. I would pay more if it was more like beautyfix. I cancelled a long time ago, it wasn’t even worth $10!

MEL

I am actually glad they are focusing on the larger box – I canceled Play a long time ago – the samples were so tiny

Reply ButtonReply

Jamie

I’m not surprised, the boxes were getting repetitive. I canceled about 18 months ago, but kept reading the reviews and spoilers. I’ve seen samples I received years ago in new boxes this year. I switched to BeautyFIX because I wanted more skincare and less makeup.

Oh no!!!! After cancelling ipsy and allure ages ago, play was the last subscription box I really enjoyed! I’m not surprised that they are replacing it with sample kits that cost more than double the price of play. Isn’t that just typical!
It was fun while it lasted. *sigh*

Devastated! Just got their email.

I signed up for Allure instead. See how that goes.

Reply ButtonReply

LA

Allure doesn’t have limitations on brands because they’re not limited like sephora is to their inventory. Allure gives a wider variety of brands… plus you get at least 1 or 2 full size items usually.

Reply ButtonReply

Liz H

Yeah I’ve found Allure way better value and have found some serious gems there, altho like with any sub some of the items can be hit or miss.

Reply ButtonReply

Kate

Love Allure! It’s the best, have been happy for 2 plus years!

Reply ButtonReply

Sharon

Allure is 1,000 times better.

I never understood why they had such lackluster boxes and so much repetition when they have access to literally every major and obscure beauty brand on the planet. Would love to see them do something truly worth of their brand reputation.

Reply ButtonReply

Alice

Agree. What a waste of opportunity.

Reply ButtonReply

Beccah

They should have sent bigger sizes and more variety instead of canceling play! Completely. I think it’s a mistake. Sephora should have the best subscription out there.

Reply ButtonReply

Beth in Oklahoma

Agreed. Sephora has access to the best stuff, they could have had a box to literally die for.

Reply ButtonReply

Narnia

Ugh so repetitive it was! I have 4 or 5 MUFE mattefying Primers (and I have dry skin). Also would get products labeled not for sensitive skin, when I specified I’m sensitive. I felt silly for opting in for 4 months..

Shana

Literally?😉

Tiffany Pree

Yay!!! 🙌 I hope they make a better box!!! 📦

Ella

I am extremely sad that Play is ending. I have been with them since the very beginning when they were first testing it out in select cities. While I did occasionally get repeats I also discovered many of my “holy grail” products through this sub. It was fun while lasted, now I’m off to Ipsy! I love that you can pick an item every month and choose add-ons as well.

Reply ButtonReply

Amy N

Yeah l enjoyed it as well and will miss being able to purchase old boxes from time to time. I was always able to stock up on some favorites this way. I feel like it couldn’t be beat for 10$ and never understood the hate it received. Even if there were repeats they were good products.

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

Hopefully they stock more of the Luxe boxes, since they usually sell out in a flash.

Reply ButtonReply

Beth

Agree!

I subscribed for about a year and then canceled two years ago. At the end, I just did not like barbie size samples. I know it was only $10, but still Ipsy and Birchbox are sending bigger samples.

Angela

Bummer I loved Sephora play subscription! Looking forward to spoilers for the April 28th luxe box . Macy’s quit doing their subscription boxes too! I already have Allure Boxycharm and premium and Boxyluxe as well as Ipsy glam bag and plus.
