Project DIY Subscription Box Review

Project DIY is a brand new DIY / Craft subscription box from MJ Trimmings. Every box includes 2-3 projects inspired by the runway. I really liked the look of the accessory projects for the Autumn in New York Collection – so I decided to sign up!

Horseshoe Wrap Bracelet

Each project comes in it’s own package, and on the lining of the package are the basics:

They also have a really nice iPad app that I used for step my step instructions – or you can use their Guides website.

The finished product! This bracelet probably took about 30 min for me to make and I love it!

Equestrian Charm Necklace

This might be my favorite finished product in the September box. I never crafted anything with metal jewelry before, so I couldn’t believe how professional this ended up looking!

Suede Tassel Keychain

The picture they included of this keychain had different color tassels, but I decided to mix all the colors together for a more muted and uniform look.

Starter Kit

(Free with coupon code MJDIY5). If you don’t have jewelry tools like these I definitely recommend getting the free starter kit – I needed these tools for every single project. (Plus it’s free!)

Verdict: I paid $30 for this box and starter kit – and I’m very happy with the quality of the items I received. All the projects featured leather or suede material, and the metal pieces were good quality too. I also really like the design of all the projects – they’re definitely on-trend in my opinion, and all items I can’t wait to use. (I’m secretly hoping to get a compliment on one of the pieces so I can say “Thanks, I MADE IT!”)

  1. Hey!
I actually happen to stumble upon your blog today and I fell in love with it! I just want to say, I am excited to see your future blog posts! Also, I just subscribed to this box and two more. Just want to say thank you!

Btw, I love the pieces you created (:!

  2. They do offer “suspending” your account if you don’t like the month’s box-you just have to go back and activate for the month you want.

  3. Hi,
I just tried to subscribe using the ‘free starter kit’ code and it’s saying that it’s invalid. I clicked on the “Subscription + starter kit” not the regular subscription.

    • Thanks for letting me know – try MJDIY9 – I think that one should be working!

      • Thanks! That worked! I have yet another subscription to add to my growing collection =)

  4. Has anyone received a shipping notice, or had their card charged? I signed up last week, and received a “welcome to MJ” email, but that’s all I heard from them.

    • Same here Chillybeans….I ordered and was not charged nor was the order reflected online. I contacted them and they said I would be charged this week and sent the Sept box….but then I am confused if and when I will be receiving the October box….which also looks AWESOME….either box I will be happy, I just hate not knowing when my card will be charged for some of these subs….I wish I had so much free cash that it wouldn’t matter!

      • Thanks Amy! At least I know it’s not just me….I checked out the October box and the September box is really more “me” so crossing my fingers I still get September….

        • I just received my kit today and it was the September box! I am excited as I really liked it. Also received my free “starter kit”. At first glance it all looks so nice, neatly packaged and very good quality. Now I am torn between this and the “For the Makers” box which also looks awesome! I may stick with this one for a couple months and make the switch. I also really like the “spike” look in the October box….especially the necklaces.

          • I’m wondering if we have the option to skip a month, as October’s isn’t my style….really looking forward to September, no shipping notice yet…

          • I don’t think I ever got the shipping notice, but I noticed they charged my cc the end of last week and it came today. The CS was very responsive, so if you don’t want October, maybe just let them know. I want to ask them when I should expect to be billed again for the next box. I like to know the dates a company will bill as I use my visa check card and I don’t like surprises!

          • I did ask their online CS, they said to go ahead and cancel once I got the Sept. shipping notice. I checked my credit card and they did bill me on 10/4. I will ask online if there is a “skip option” since I do like this box, and don’t want to cancel completely if I can suspend a month.

  5. This looks like an awesome box. I love making my own accessories!

  6. I too have been eyeing this one and just took the plunge! You get so much for $30 and figured this is a good way to while away the long winter months to come! I have freakishly small wrists so love the idea of a custom bracelet and the necklace is SO cool and different.

  7. Had to order after I saw your review. I love the projects and the tools!

  8. I’ve been debating this one for awhile, do you know if this month is still available?

    • Oops just saw the other comments!

  9. So, if I were to order this today would I get this same box? I LOVE everything!!!

    • Yep! 🙂

  10. The site says code MJDIY5 is not valid 🙁

    • Oh, one thing I forgot to mention – you have to make sure you add Project DIY Monthly Subscription + Starter Kit to your cart – not the regular subscription for the coupon code to work.

      Hope that helps!

  11. This looks awesome! Thinking about buying!

  12. This looks so great I want to try this box (:

  13. Thanks for the review! I just ordered this box. I love MJ Trimmings and I think these projects look great! I am super excited to get this box.
