Vince Unfold Clothing Rental Review

Vince Unfold Clothing Rental Review

What Is Vince Unfold?

Vince Unfold is the new clothing rental subscription from the luxury clothing brand, Vince. I am a self-proclaimed superfan of Vince's minimal basics, but since their clothing is pricey, I'm not able to own as many of their pieces as I'd like. With this new service, I can rent four pieces of Vince clothing on an unlimited basis, plus I have the option to buy pieces I love at a discount.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about how many items I could rent in one month, which items I picked vs which ones I actually got, and see whether Vince Unfold is right for you.

Pros & Cons

The Pros
  • Rent & wear new clothing styles every month without commitment.
  • Discounts on items you want to keep.
  • Try before you buy.
The Cons
  • You can prioritize items in your "Edit" (a wishlist of items you'd like to receive), but you aren't able to choose exactly which items you get in each shipment.
  • Vince Unfold doesn't show prices on their site—you won't know the price of the items until you get them.
  • Clothing is not always seasonal.
Is It Worth It?
  • Vince Unfold costs $160.00/month to rent four pieces at a time—it often costs about that amount to buy a single Vince piece at retail.
I'd Recommend Vince Unfold If You
  • Are a fan of Vince already, but can't afford to purchase a lot of their clothes.
  • Like to refresh your wardrobe with big-ticket items without purchasing new clothes all the time.
  • May not have access to discounted Vince items locally.

Getting Started

Signing up for Vince Unfold is really easy. All you have to do is create an account (which you can do without actually signing up first) and put in all of your billing and shipping info. They don't have stylists or preferences like other rental services, so there aren't any questionnaires to fill out. Plus, they only offer one type of subscription (four items at a time for $160/month), where other brands may offer a variety of programs and price points. I do like that their unlimited plan lets you swap your pieces for new items as often as you'd like (with free shipping both ways), so I won't be stuck with the same items all month.

At Home

The At Home section of your Edit shows you the pieces you currently have rented out. Once a set of items ships, you can go to the At Home section to finally get to see the prices of the items. The site does not list retail nor discounted prices up front, so you won't know the value of what you're receiving until the order ships. Vince Unfold will let you know the discount you're getting (the percentage), but not the actual retail cost. (I had to track those down online myself.) This section is also where you note which items you're sending back and which pieces, if any, you want to buy. (I'll talk more about that a little later!)

You'll also find package tracking info on this page.

Soon after you've subscribed and stocked your Wish List with at least 10 items, Vince Unfold will send an email saying that your order is being prepared. I got this notification the same day I signed up (April 26th). My shipping confirmation that didn't come until four days later on April 30th. That was kind of a bummer—since the service is unlimited, time is of the essence. Once it shipped, my order only took two days to get to me. (It arrived May 2nd.)

Unboxing My First Vince Unfold Delivery

Stack of 2 Boxes

My first four items didn't fit in one box, so I received two. From the outside, my packages were completely plain, brown, unbranded boxes.

open VInce Unfold Boxes

When I opened the boxes up, I did find some Vince Unfold branding on the underside of each lid.

close up of VInce Unfold sticker

Each item was wrapped in tissue paper separately and sealed with a branded sticker.

Vince Unfold includes a booklet that details how the service works, but I didn't get an invoice or paper listing the items I received. (I'll have to look to the At Home section of my Edit for that information.)

return mailing bag

I also got a large plastic shipping bag for my returns.

My Vince Unfold Review

Here are the clothes I got in my first Vince Unfold order.

Vince Cropped Cotton Crew in Optic White - Retail Value $195.00, Vince Unfold Price $156.00

This white long-sleeved top is sort of like a sweater with a boxy fit. Once I put it on, I realized I could have sized down quite a bit. The fabric was really high-quality, and the construction was what I'd expect from an expensive brand. The top just felt like it was well-made and would last a long time. It was quite soft, but sadly, simply too big for me to see myself wearing it all that often.

Vince 3/4 Sleeve Pencil Dress in Black - Retail Value $365.00, Vince Unfold Price $273.50

I simply love this dress! It's so sophisticated and simple, and I felt downright regal wearing it. The fabric is rather heavy, so it's better saved for a cold weather day. I think it fit me really well and was crafted quite nicely. The weight of the fabric and the construction of the hems and zippers showed off why the price tag is so high. There was definitely no icky feeling while sliding into this one. I love where it hit me on the leg (although I'm sure it was designed for someone taller than 5'3" in mind), and even though the sleeves were a bit long, they looked great bunched up. This one was a little tricky to get in and out of because of the back zipper, but I was able to make it work.

Vince Long Sleeve Mock Neck Pullover in Dark Copper -Retail Value $195.00 (sold out), Vince Unfold Price $117.00

Admittedly, it's a bit harder to see the shape of this pullover in this photo, but the link above will give you a better idea, you're interested. I don't wear brown a lot, but I couldn't help but be attracted to this comfy-looking drawstring sweatshirt. Once again, the fabric was gorgeous and miles better than a fast fashion piece from the mall, even if the silhouette isn't breaking any new ground. I love, love, love a good sweatshirt on colder days, and this one was just so cozy.

Making Purchases, Returns, & Getting New Items

I chose the "Return Item" option for each piece I was returning. (The screen responds with a "Return Notified" message, meaning Vince Unfold will soon start preparing your next shipment. Note that they won't ship a new set of items out until your return begins tracking, so get that package to the post office ASAP!

My Second Vince Unfold Rental

Here's my second delivery from Vince Unfold.

Vince Slinky Ribbed Crew in Black - Retail Value $195.00, Vince Unfold Price $135.00 (Found here for $90.00)

This tight, slightly sheer, ribbed top is awesome. It reminds me of a top I received from another rental service (Le Tote) this winter, but the quality here is unparalleled. This top fit me really well and was quite long, so it could easily be tucked into jeans, slacks, or a skirt.

This is the first time I was able to put an all-Vince outfit together since I received a top and a bottom in the same box. I even paired the pieces with my "like new" Vince sandals that I bought second-hand on Poshmark.

Vince Split Back Shell in Black - Retail Value $275.00, Vince Unfold Price $220.00 (Found here for $197.00)

Here we have a staple piece for warmer weather—a sleeveless top. This one has a split back that drapes down and exposes a keyhole opening. I opted to tuck this top in, but even so, it drapes nicely. I probably could have sized down with this top, but it still looks alright.

Vince Twist Drape Skirt in Dark Pebble - Retail Value $295.00, Vince Unfold Price $236.00

I paired the previous top with this navy blue skirt, which has a twist detail at the front that makes the hem fall a bit higher in the front and lower in the back. It has pockets (ooooh, ahhhhh) and is very comfortable to wear. That said, I have never been a big fan of skirts for various reasons, and I tend to prefer tighter fits.

Making My Second Return & An Important Tip

My plan was to use my first month of Vince Unfold as a test run for the service. When I signed up, I set a calendar reminder for myself, so if I decided to cancel, I could do so before being charged again.

There is a cancel button in your account, but it simply prompts the above message. UGH. The dreaded phone-call-to-cancel! I especially didn't appreciate that I only had a five-hour window each weekday to call—at the time, it was 10am on the Friday before a holiday weekend! Thankfully, I was able to talk to someone and cancel around 3pm that day. They did offer me a $50.00 credit to stay, but I declined.

So, Is Vince Unfold Worth It?

Vince Unfold is not for me. Personally, $160.00 is a lot of money for me to spend, even for four or more items, and I didn't love that I couldn't choose specifically what I got with each shipment. When putting together my Wish List, I had added some cheaper items (partly because Vince Unfold wasn't showing me a lot of seasonally appropriate items), as well as more expensive items that I was really interested in trying. But I never got the big-ticket items (like leather pants), even though I'd marked them as priorities. Getting to try those standout pieces may have made this program more worth it for me.

I also didn't find the discount (usually 20% off, but sometimes up to 40%) for the items all that enticing, especially because I found some of the pieces elsewhere online for less. I'd rather stalk an item I know I'll love until it goes on sale or ends up at an outlet—it feels more worth it to me to buy one piece and have it forever than to pay roughly the same price to rent 8-12 so-so items. If Vince Unfold were about half the cost, or if I were able to choose the exact four pieces I got in each delivery, the service might be a bit more alluring for me.

That being said, there is something to renting high-end clothing as opposed to cheaper items that really elevates one's style. I received two shipments (which I had for roughly a week each) with a total of eight items that retailed for a total of $1,920.00. If I had a different job where I thought I needed to constantly impress with a rotating closet that was extremely well constructed, this might be a better service. As I said, I am also lucky enough to live near stores that offer the Vince brand at very discounted prices where I can actually try them on before buying or return if I change my mind. Not everyone has that available to them, so this might be a great option for them as well.

I wish I had read this review and especially the comments before sending them my money. I feel silly and duped for spending more than it would cost to own something nice to rent clothes that I can’t wear. I love Vince and some of the Vince stuff I own is my very favorite. But this service is not a good deal. I signed up after browsing through the items online figuring I’m going back to the office soon and would be nice to try some new styles. Only after I paid did I find out how it really works: Many of the nicest things are not available in my size (I am a very average size Medium) at all. Most of the shirts are WAY too low-cut for me to wear even casually. I put all 35 items in my size in my closet to make sure I had enough to get a shipment and didn’t realize I wouldn’t pick which 4 came to me. The 4 I got are: 1) a cotton dress that is worn out and faded and looks frumpy and terrible – they offered a member price of $24 and it’s not worth even that, 2) a heavy turtleneck sweater that had only one picture online that made it look thin and light… it’s spring, 3)a pair of pants that actually fit great but were so scratchy I had to take them right off, and 4) a pretty silk shirt that – unlike the picture- was low cut as in the v lands below my breasts and it’s a wide neckline – completely unwearable. Everything came wrinkled and smells like either a masking fragrance or maybe strongly scented detergent. I called to cancel and after the long, hard sell (she was wonderfully pleasant and just doing her job and I can only imagine they probably compensate based on retention and it was hurting her to lose me) I learned that even though I’ve paid for another 3+ weeks of service the shipments immediately stop. What a disaster. I lost money and feel really dumb about it. Like one of the other commenters said it reflects so poorly on the brand.

Terrible service, fraudulent advertising and shipping policy. Do not subscribe. It takes them 2 week sit ship an item and it would take 2 other to return and order another set, such as there are no u limited exchanges during the month. Prioritisation option doesn’t work, you will get what you didn’t want and it will take you a month to get it and ship back. Stay away

I am a big Vince fan (or was), but wish had read your review and the comments before I subscribed.
To put things in perspective, I am a RTR member and have been enjoying that experience.

Vince Unfold however has been really unpleasant to deal with.

The newer items from their current collections are not readily available to put in your closet.

The pieces I recieved were visibly worn and some unseasonal. Their “closet” upkeep is cumbersome, and you don’t have as much control over the pieces. If you drop below 10 items in your virutal “closet” (which can happen since the choices are rather limited) – you can easily be paying for a month without receiving any items.

Also: when the pandemic hit, I called them up to see if they would be willing to put my subscription on hold as I am a physician and am practically living in scrubs – and they wanted me to keep paying 25 $ monthly to do so.

All in all, I pretty much wasted 300$ on this and wish I had done my research before (since this is clearly a pattern).

I’ve been on their subscription plan for more than a year. At first it was very good. Turn time was quick, and they had very good selections on the site including all the leather pants and jackets, etc. As time progressed, the options are less and less appealing as they gained more members, the good stuff are never available. No more leather products or anything that’s worth of your time/money. When you send things back and wait for them to mail things back out, it takes about 1.5 weeks. So realistically you can only turn things around twice each month. For $170 per month, I don’t see the value anymore. Best part? Well, when I joined, it took a few clicks on the site to join. Tried to cancel? On the phone for over an hour and nobody picked up. I would say – if you have not joined yet, don’t bother.

Wanted to comment on my experience here as well….As a huge vince fan, I was thrilled when they announced unfold, unfortunately, it has been an incredibly disappointing experience and a very poor reflection of the brand. While my first box went off perfectly every package since has been poorly executed. My second box came in 4 separate shipments, since items weren’t in stock even though I had a robust “closet” with more than the minimum required. The next box was even more disappointing – I sent my box in with over a week before a business trip I was hoping to take some items on. When I reached out to customer service for a status update they informed me it could take nearly two weeks to process and receive my shipment. I was floored that a monthly subscription means that I could potentially be packageless for half the month you’re paying $160 for. They continued to tell me my items had shipped even though I could see it was in preshipment (meaning a label was created but it wasn’t picked up by usps for 3 days). The customer support has been less than helpful and just reiterates the same lines over and over again.

I have noticed that more and more curated items are becoming unavailable in to add to my closet and priority items aren’t prioritized. Once vince figures out logistics and support this could be a great service – unfortunately, they just don’t have it together.

Hello and thank you for writing such a detailed review. Despite some of the cons, I decided to signup and give it a try. Absolutely terrible! After 5 days of not hearing from Vince Unfold I called customer service. The representative was very courteous and assured me that my items would be shipped out either the next day or the following day at the latest. Apparently, it takes 72 hours to process an order, which is not noted anywhere when you sign up. She even offered a $30 credit towards the next month subscription. I did get a tracking # the next day and received the first shipment within 2 days as promised. BUT there was only one item in the box. I called customer service again the next day. The representative was not able to tell me when the rest of the items will be shipped, but offered another $50 credit toward the next month subscription. At this point I don’t think I’m going to renew so I asked if I could get credit toward this month’s subscription and I’m willing to wait and not ask for a complete refund. She said Vince doesn’t do refunds so I asked if I could speak to her manager. After a brief hold, the representative returned and said no one is available to speak with me and that she canceled my membership. Wow! I’m glad I’ll be getting my money back, hopefully, but what an awful way of doing business!

Great review. I curious if you know where it’s shipping from? I divide my time between two cities so not sure where I should have my first order shipped to. I just signed up but I will be leaving town this week.

Not worth it at all… they almost never had the items I liked available in my size & so I could never fill my edit list. I once received a top & a dress that was the exact same style as said top, and some items I received were not wearable bc of how used they were. I thought it was a disastrous waste of money. And I agree with whoever noted the discount for purchasing is hardly a discount— some of the items I received needed to be donated to Salvation Army, yet they were offered for
Maybe 20% off regular price (I would not have wanted them for free)

I’ve been using Vince Unfold for a few months now. Overall, I’m fairly happy. There is definitely some room for improvement.
I am having the same experience as the author, in that I notice I barely receive any items that I’ve marked as Priority. I’ve maybe gotten 1 or 2 items max from that list. Also, in the beginning the items in my box looked practically brand new. I’m not sure if it’s because the service has gotten more popular, but my box items have started looking progressively more worn. One item I received in the most recent box even had a little hole in it.
I don’t mind that I can’t choose exactly what’s in each box- I actually like that element of surprise. But once or twice I’ve received two items that look REALLY similar— in my most recent box, I got two navy cardigans. Like, ok I guess? I will be sending this box back in a day or two.
I absolutely love Vince for work so I’m going to stick with it for a little while longer. Just hoping they’re dealing with some growing pains that’ll be ironed out soon.

RTR no longer offers Vince. Not sure who pulled the plug on who, but there you go.

Thanks for this.

Actually, Vince Unfold will send you a second box before the other box is received at the fulfillment center. Technically, you can have 2x the number of items at home at any given time. Utilizing the “Return Notify” feature is a game-changer.
They do message it quite clearly that you must add at least 10 items to the edit, and suggest 24+ for a seamless delivery.

DO NOT use vince Unfold ! its a nightmare! it took them more when 72 hours even to consider to start shipment . after calling couple of times to costumer service , they still could not provide trucking number! I cancelled it right away, hoping to get a full refund because the costumer service employee told me that people who will decide to give me my money back are in INDIA!!!! It is not worth the aggravation and its a lot of money to spend for services they don’t know how to provide!

Agreed, Marne. Your review saved all of us time and money.

I’ve seen the Vince ads on Insta and was considering a one-month trial, but will save my money. Having to call customer service was the kicker for me. Also, for $160, I would like to see at least five items–one piece for each workday. That might make it worth it.

A few questions: What was the turnaround on the shipping time for box #2? How many possible exchanges could you do if you wore one item each day of the week, assuming you kept the 10 items on Wish List at all times? Probably still only three, right?

Thanks again! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Marne Orenich

Glad I could help, Melissa!
As far as the turnaround for my second box, it looks like they began preparing it on Wednesday, May 8th, shipped it Saturday, May 11th, and I received it (in Pittsburgh) Monday, May 13th. They’ll start prepping a new shipment as soon as you do the “return notification” online but won’t ship it until your return bag begins to track w the USPS (aka- it gets scanned). We usually wait for our mail carrier to pick the return bags but he was on vacation which meant his substitute dropped the ball and I had to eventually run my return to the post office (which took more time).
I am very confident that I could have gotten a third shipment with time to wear it if I had had 10 items in my Wish List. That definitely cost me the extra round. I think 4 rounds might be pushing it, but possible. Since I had Andy photograph me here at the office, there were weekend days that didn’t really count towards my “wear” days. It also depends on which items you receive. Obviously, four dresses or tops would take longer to wear than two tops and two bottoms (which could be worn in two outfits as opposed to four).
I can’t recall exactly where mine shipped from, but I think it was fairly close which explains the two days it took to get to me. I’m not sure if they only have one place they ship from or several. As you can tell, there are so many factors at play!
If you ever end up going for it, please let me know what your experience was! Very curious…

I tried it twice (a second time after the $50 credit they offered, which was a nightmare to get applied). Each one I was able to exactly three boxes (shipments) by end of the month. I don’t see why there needed to be such a long prep time. I would have been ok w the shipping two days each way, but as soon as I return notify, why not just ship me whatever is in stock on my list? I do RTR as my main one and the second they receive the item and notify you, you can order a new thing and it ships that day. For me, it’s the four items together that was the true killer because then I have to wait about 4-5 days for more stuff to arrive, minimum. Also one time they sent me two of the exact same skirt in really similar colors. Like yo, give me a little variety! Or don’t send me three bottoms and one top! I did find that there is some wiggle room – I did return notify and then didn’t drop in mail for another 1-2 days and my order did start processing.

ks

That is A LOT of money to pay a month for just 1 brand with such measly discounts to purchase. I second using Rent the Runway. I rented several designer pieces…some of which I ended up purchasing for 70+% off.

allisen

Rent the Runway carries some Vince and their monthly, 4-item rental is much cheaper. Plus you can pick the items!

Reply ButtonReply

Cm

Yeah Vince actually said they launched because of the high rate of “keeps” from RTR but the 4 at a time doesn’t work for me. All items ship from Ohio, so priority mail would be 1-3 days depending on your location by the way. Also they don’t seem to like you changing addresses – I was on a cross country trip and they kept saying my tax rate would change bc of my shipping address and I am like yo I am traveling, relax!

Reply ButtonReply

Marne Orenich

Oh wow- that’s a really good call out, Allisen. Thanks for pointing that out!

cleegiants

I second RTR! I subscribe to RTR Unlimited, which is $160 a month as well and you can always select your items. You do create a wishlist of sorts – “hearts”, but it’s more for personal reference so you can remember what you like. I work across the street from a Vince store and go there every so often to try things on to see what would fit, then hop onto RTR to see if I can rent it. There’s this one burnt orange slip dress I’ve had my eye on!

Marne, one thing you didn’t mention – are you able to return items one at a time, or do you have to swap all 4 (or whatever you’re returning) at once? That’s one of the things about RTR I love, – i always have something on hand. I wish they would have the ” return notified” option so that things would start shipping sooner, but it’s a small squibble I suppose.

Nice thorough review! I completely agree with your assessment.

Karen

I totally agree. This was SUCH a helpful review. I love how Marne walked us through the whole sub process, including the clothing options and what she ultimately prioritized (but did not receive)…I agree, getting to sport some spendy leather pants might have changed the perspective on whether this sub was worth the splurge. The review really helped set expectations appropriately – that you might not receive your wish list items. And I particularly loved that Marne explained her thoughts on exactly why this sub might or might now work for someone. It was the perfect review.

I think I’m going to pass and do exactly as Marne plans to do to satisfy her Vince craving! (wait until my local off-price retailer restocks on Vince and get a piece or two that I truly adore instead of renting some decent but not totally adored Vince clothes). Thank you again!
