Little Feminist Book Club is a monthly book subscription box for kids ages newborn to 9 years old. Each month you will receive one to two books to help diversify your bookshelf. Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box that—it's just occurring to me—could be colored by your kid. It's got cute illustrations of children dressed as superheroes jumping from cloud to cloud. I love the minimal packaging of this subscription.

Each month comes with a welcome note explaining the theme and some insights into why that month's book was selected. This month it's all about body positivity with a book all about body parts. This 2021 edition is an upgrade from the 1986 book of the same name in that the bodies represented are expanded to feature a diverse range of ethnicities and genders.
The activity page this month is a coloring page and a body-positive song meant to be sung to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle." I think the sentiment of the song is sweet in its self-loving message, but I'm annoyed that the words don't fit with the tune very smoothly. I would've loved more from this month's activity.

Apt for a book about bodies, this month's selection is alive with movement. Both in the text and the art, there are tons of suggestions of ways in which bodies can move and be used. Bodies of many races, abilities, and gender identities are represented doing everyday activities and, you know, having body parts. My three-year-old kid was completely enthralled by the color and action on these pages. The book does, of course, have a page dedicated to genitals. It's tastefully done, showing several children getting dressed or going to the bathroom. It identifies them only as "genitals" rather than getting into specifics, which seems reasonable to me. Honestly, I think that page was a bigger deal to my husband and me than it was to our kid—to her, there was nothing even remotely taboo about it.
Discussion Questions

This was the first Little Feminist book that my daughter didn't seem to love. She didn't offer any insights but simply hasn't been choosing it for storytime or before bed. I did ask her the discussion questions provided, and it's always hilarious to hear what a toddler's answers are to open-ended questions, but she wasn't super keyed into them relating to the book this month.
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.
Value Breakdown: As is often the case with Little Feminist, this box is fantastic but the value just isn't quite there. This box costs $25.90 including shipping, and this month the book only costs $17.95 (or less if you buy it on Amazon). Some months, the book selection, activity, and discussion questions feel like they contribute value that might justify that dollar amount difference, but this month it wasn't there for me.

While this month's Little Feminist age 2-4 wasn't a huge hit for my 3-year-old daughter, we do love this subscription overall. Typically she really connects with the book selection and has fun with the discussion questions. I think an occasional "off month" is realistic and am not fazed by it overall, though I do wish there were a little more impressive of a value offering from this month and this subscription overall.
