Bespoke Post "Toss" Review

The boxes typically come with a card to let you know what's in the box and a little bit about each item. This one includes the rules of Mölkky.

Tactic Original Mölkky - Retail Value $35.49 (from Amazon)

My friends and I have been playing Mölkky for several years and it's never a bad time. It is a Finnish lawn game that sort of marries bowling with darts. It's a perfect game for a barbecue, pool party, or picnic. It's great for all ages and only requires throwing a wooden pin and a little counting. The rules are fairly simple. Players toss a baton at 12 numbered, wooden pins. If you hit one pin, you get the number at the top of the pin. If you knock down multiple pins, you get that number of points. On your turn, you have three throws to earn points. If you miss all three throws, you're out of the game. You play to exactly 50. If you go over, you restart at 25.

I had been wanting to make my own Mölkky set for some time, but ... life. So I jumped at the opportunity to receive a pre-made, official set. Everything about it is perfect. The height of the pins, the big, bold numbers, and the rounded edges of the throwing pin. The only thing I would change – but not something I expected – is I'd like a few extra throwing pins. I'll likely just make a few extras so we don't have to constantly be throwing the only baton back to the striker after every throw.

I am incredibly happy to finally have my own set of Mölkky. My family reunion is coming up soon and I can't wait to introduce my family to this game. We also host a lot of pool parties. So this was a great addition to our game repertoire.

For some reason, I couldn't find the price on the official website. A simple search will find prices ranging from $26.50 to $59.99. To simplify it, here is the Amazon link for $35.49 and it even comes in a little wooden crate.

Baggu Merch Tote - Listed Value $16.00

Included in the box is a Baggu cotton tote to carry the pins and more. I personally enjoy unbranded, functional items. I think this bag is perfect for carrying everything you need for a good Möllky game. In all honesty, the box the game comes in is nice for carrying it, too. However, it's nice to just throw everything in a bag and not overthink it.

Rumpl Beer Blanket - Retail Value $8.00

What's a good lawn game without a few drinks? I've even played a few games that required players to be holding a drink. So I thought this beer blanket was a perfect complement to the Mölkky set. It looks just like a tiny blanket and even has a small pouch that the blanket folds up into. The can is held in the blanket koozie by two crisscrossing straps for that ultra-light feel. While it surely provide some insulation, I wouldn't expect the beer blanket to keep your drink cold too long. It does well capturing the condensation. I liked the blanket look, but found the pouch to be a little annoying. It's a cute idea and I'll use it, but I think I'll be cutting off the pouch.

Word Notebook - Estimated Value $3.33 (Set of three costs $10.00)

As a person who journals (poorly), I am an absolute sucker for neat, little notepads. Even though we can keep all our notes on our phones now, nothing beats writing it all down longhand. This little beauty measures 3-1/2 by 5-1/2 and its style is called "Denim." At first glance, it almost looks as if this notebook is specifically for Möllky, with its circular bullet points, 12 numbered months, and suggested method of keeping track of your to-do list. While any paper will do for scoring (We use a small white board with markers), this little notebook is perfect not only to keep score but also to remember all those past times you won.

Verdict: "Toss" went straight to the top of my list when I saw it become available. Mölkky is a great game and Bespoke Post curated three great items to go with it. Everything was useful and thoughtful. This will pair very well with "Dive," which I picked last month, since I usually play at pool parties. I played a quick game with a friend for the sake of this review, but I'm really excited for the next big gathering, because it's a great game to play with a group. It's only a matter of time before Mölkky is available everywhere and a household name. So I suggest you get a set as soon as possible and be the trendsetter in your circle of friends.

In terms of value, these items add up to an estimated $60.83. That is using the Amazon price for the Mölkky set. Bespoke Post may see things differently, but this is an easily available price. This subscription is about $49. So that leaves about a $12 difference. That's not a ton of value. Out of curiosity, I went back through my Bespoke Post reviews and here are the values: $95, $100, $86, $47, and $97. Boxes are typically nearly twice the value. Interestingly though, the lower valued boxes (Toss and Whet) have something in common. They didn't have prices listed on the official site, because I'm assuming they are wholesale only. So I had to go find them for sale and when I did the price was much less than expected. You can read into that what you will. While I really wanted this box, think it is great, and am glad to have it, I wish there had been more value for the subscribers. Perhaps a 12-pack?

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  Yes, the "Toss" box is still available at the time of this post. Or you can pick from one of several rotating boxes.

Glad to learn about a new game. I think a coupon for a 12 pack is a fantastic idea to get more value in the box.

Too bad the pouch on the beer blanket wasn’t big enough to protect the top from bees, flies, etc. In between sips.

Now that’s a good idea. Thanks for commenting.

I bought this box a while ago, and the game has been a hit in our house. Our only issue is getting the pins to stay upright on our grass. Maybe it’s our mowing technique, but we have resorted to placing a garden paver on the lawn to use for the initial set up.

I know what you mean. I’ve wondering about putting a nail or something in the bottom of the pins, but not sure if that would help or hurt. Are there official Mölkky tournaments? How do they deal with this? Thanks for commenting.
