BoxyLuxe June 2021 Review

Now, on to the items!

Ciaté London I Am A Woman Palette – Retail Value $45.00

Historically, in my reviews, I have not been a huge Ciaté London fan. I mean, I like their nail polish, but the makeup and skincare I have gotten from them have not been my favorites out there. With that in mind, I felt a little 'meh' about this palette even before I cracked it open. I also thought the overall design could have been so much cooler and maybe a little less cheesy for a collection based around some of history's most amazing badass heroes. Of course, the packaging isn't the most important thing here, it's just something I get hung up on in general. I was very, VERY surprised by the formulas inside this palette. The vast majority were really excellent with great pigmentation, smooth texture, and a subtle versatility that isn't super apparent when you first look at this pink-leaning assortment. In fact, if you ignore the pink shades here, it is actually a great selection of neutrals and everyday shades balanced out with enough shimmer and drama to make it great for evening looks too. This palette was really fun to play with and I am happy to be wrong about the quality and versatility of this Ciaté product.

Can you imagine being responsible for assigning names to these shades? I feel like that would be so much pressure.

Here is a quick look featuring the following shades: Mae Jamison, Frida Kahlo, Junko Tabei, Marsha P Johnson, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

NARS Blush in 'Orgasm', 4.8 g – Retail Value $30.00

If you ask people to name a cult-classic blush, NARS Orgasm would certainly be one you would hear over and over. In addition to the name that felt very racy back in 1999 when it launched (I was in my early teens and totally scandalized), the formula felt unlike anything else out there. It is pure pink with a golden shimmer flush that is universally flattering. I do find that if I apply with a too heavy hand that it makes me weirdly golden, but that is a "me" issue rather than a NARS issue. Even though this blush launched over 20 years ago, it is still a shade that I love and reach for all the time, and this full-size is an excellent replacement to the mini that has been nearly empty in my makeup bag for a few months now.

Iconic.

Luxie Florals Brush Set – Retail Value $40.00

I know many of us subscription box addicts have enough brushes to build a house out of, but I have to admit that this little set is super cute! The mint and purple make me smile and if I had to choose what type of brushes to receive more of, shadow brushes would be that choice. These can also be used for concealer and spot highlighting. Quality is pretty decent, which is standard for LUXIE, in my experience. This set also arrived with a blending sponge in that same cute mint shade.

Avant Hyaluronic Acid Replenishing Lip Serum, 8.5 mL - Retail Value $122.00

This was the only real eye-roll product for me this month. Avant is one of those brands that turn me off with their retail price because the formulas never wow me and it is just not a brand I can get excited about. This lip serum has hyaluronic acid and exfoliating lactic acid, but it had a weird taste and wasn't for me.

The Word WOKE Cool Steam Eye Mask – Retail Value $49.99

Ok, I know most of us wouldn't pay $50 for this mask set, but I really liked it and I was happy to get it in this month's delivery. It is a blush-colored silk-like material and has inner pockets to place either the chill pads or the heat pads which automatically warm as soon as you open the packs. The cool option is great for puffiness and the warming pads are wonderful for relaxing and helping with product absorption. In fact, the only thing I didn't love about this mask was that since I use an eye oil it can leave splotches on the fabric of the mask. But, well, sacrifices must be made sometimes. You can also use the mask alone as just a sleep mask. Though sometimes tools and gadgets can feel really gimmicky in beauty boxes, I personally thought this was a really cool and fun sort of thing to be included this month.

Earth Harbor SUNSTONE Hair Revive Elixir, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $30.00

Earth Harbor makes some of my favorite serums and ampoules, so I was surprised to see they have a hair serum too! You can use this a few different ways: add a few drops to your ends as a frizz-fighter and leave-in, apply extra, leave on for 10 minutes and rinse, or mix a little with some water in a spritz bottle for a shine-enhancing mist that won't weigh you down. It smells absolutely lovely, of jasmine and white florals with just a hint of tartness.

Dr. Brant Triple Antioxidant Face Cream, 1.7 fl oz - Retail Value $64.00

I normally like this brand a lot, and for myself (dry skin, minimal breakouts unless they are hormonal) this cream is a pretty good fit. If you are someone prone to congested skin and clogged pores, proceed with caution. I tend to eyeball ingredient lists with the help of INCI and some of these ingredients aren't likely ideal for acne-prone users. Specifically, isopropyl isostearate is number 4 on the list which is a little higher than I would love to see for this emollient. Does this mean you will break out and hate this stuff? Absolutely not. But it is something to be aware of if you break out often. INCI is a great place to check on ingredients and learn more about what is in the products you buy, so I recommend taking a peek in general if you are an ingredient nerd like me. Anyways, for someone like myself with dry skin and less worry about breakouts, I enjoyed this stuff. It has ceramides and lipid-rich oils that soothe and fortify my skin as well as antioxidants from tea, soothing allantoin, fortifying panthenol, and moisturizing hyaluronic acid. It feels really great on my skin and has a medium weight and a fresh scent.

SMITH FRENCH DUBLIN Fresh Green Leaves Aromatic Hand Wash, 500 mL

Finally, our last item is a pretty fancy-looking large bottle of hand soap. I know that some subscribers will be like "Handsoap? But why?" and while I don't disagree with that sentiment, I kind of love this stuff. It smells very green and outdoorsy, while still feeling like a luxury soap scent. Another mystery is how the brand seems to be scrubbed from the internet aside from an Instagram account that seems handbag-focused (???) but regardless I kind of love this soap and it lives in my master bathroom now.

Verdict: The total retail value of this BoxyLuxe was around $380.99 without the soap retail value which I couldn't verify anywhere online. That is still a great value for this $50 box, even if $122 of that was taken up by the less than impressive Avant lip serum. I absolutely loved the hair serum, eyeshadow palette, blush, sleep mask, and hair serum. The cream was pretty great too (for me) and the brush kit was charming. There was enough inside here to justify the cost of the box in my mind, but I would like some additional bigger brands next month that are already living on my Sephora and Ulta wishlists. That is generally what I expect from the highest boxy tier so I hope next month delivers.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but you can claim a spot for the September BoxyLuxe box by upgrading your BoxyCharm subscription in your account section.

Value Breakdown: At $49.99, each of the 8 items has an average cost of $6.25.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Oh man, the Ciate palette looked so cheesy to me that I’ve kind of been glossing over the description every time I’ve seen it for the past few months. Did NOT realize the shade names are for real women. Yikes. Are they giving a cut of the profits to the women who are still alive, or to the estates of those who have passed? Real talk: I don’t think Soujourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Madame CJ Walker, Rosa Parks, and Amelia Robinson in particular would be too happy to have a cosmetics company owned by a white woman profiting off their names. Even I think that’s pretty messed up.

(It seems there’s a typo in this post: “Mae Jamison” should be Mae Jemison.)

The brush set & the eyeshadow palette are the standouts (of this version of Luxe)…Nars is OK. I’ve never used it, it’s pretty and a cult classic so I wouldn’t be mad about it. I just have quite a few blushes that I’m loving already. (-So just isn’t too exciting…However nice to have a brand like Nars w/a full size product!) I want to try Earth Harbor so so bad…But a hair serum is not what makes me want to try the brand so much. Hopefully one of these boxes -in the near future, would be nice. 👍 Lol
TFS, your review is appreciated!!

A lip serum that’s $431 an ounce? That’s some gall with the pricing there! Downright laughable.

And I am guessing the soap is really old overstock from a company that hasn’t existed in years.

I received the hand soap as well and it was disappointing, but then I found out it’s inclusion was more offensive than I thought.
An eagle eyed individual posted over on r e d d i t about some product info they uncovered (literally). This item has been discontinued since early 2020, Smith French Dublin no longer exists, when they did, SFD priced it at $22, not $25, and what kicked off the “investigation” was seeing conflicting countries of origin on the label and the bottle itself.

This was my first and last BoxyLuxe.
