Tribe Beauty Box "Cotton Candy Kisses" April 2021 Review

Here is the info sheet for the box.

Lurella Cosmetics Sweetheart Palette - Retail Value $20.00

I am hereby renaming this Sweetheart palette the Barbie palette- all of those pinks are screaming Barbie Girl to me, and I love it. The shimmers on this palette are out of this world- they're multidimensional, buttery soft, and very pigmented. Applying the shimmers with a finger will give you a more dramatic finish while sweeping it on with a brush will soften up the effect. The mattes on this palette aren't the best I have ever used, but they weren't bad. Honestly, if you've been needing an eyeshadow palette with plenty of pinks, the $20 price tag on this one is going to be hard to beat while still getting a quality palette.

Here are the swatches, with the liquid lipstick and highlighter also included in this box swatched at the very top.

I did two quick looks with this palette- on one eye I applied the tan duochrome shade Soulmate with my finger all over my lid to see how it would look on it's own (I loved it).

On the other eye I played with the purple shades- I did a base of the shade Cutie and applied the shimmery Love Potion on top with a brush, and then blended the shade Date Night in the outer corner. I liked this smokey purple look a lot, and I don't think I've ever tried a look like this one. I'm also wearing a little bit of the Laura Geller highlighter on the high points of my cheekbones for a more natural glow, and I like how it turned out.

Spongelle Bulgarian Rose Body Wash Infused Buffer - Retail Value $16.00

I am no stranger to Spongelles, but I am still happy to see them in a subscription box. This is a body wash-infused sponge that is great for exfoliating your skin and sudsing up to get clean at the same time. Along with rose, the scent has notes of jasmine and strawberry, and I enjoy the sweet floral smell. This brand is vegan and cruelty-free, and it also uses a bacteria agent in its buffer to help prevent bacteria growth. Also, this may just be a me thing, but I really love that the sponge is shaped like a flower instead of something more boring.

Laura Geller Supersize Baked Gelato Illuminator in Gilded Honey, 0.35 oz – Listed Value $55.00

I am really excited that after years of seeing a mini baked gelato highlighter in various sets and subscription boxes that Tribe sent out a full-size in this box- and a jumbo one at that. Subscribers could have received the shade Diamond Dust or Gilded Honey, and Gilded Honey is the one I was hoping for – look at that gorgeous golden color and mesmerizing swirl. My brush picked up this powder easily, and if I wanted a more high-impact highlight I could apply it with my fingers, too. I like how versatile this powder is – I can go for just a soft kiss of glow, or I can go blinding depending on my mood. I couldn’t find this available for sale in the jumbo size, so I linked to the original. Since the 0.16 oz version retails for $26, I think the listed value matches what this was when it was sold. I’m not sure how old this is since I can’t find it online anymore, but that doesn’t really bother me for a highlighter (I would care a lot more if it was a skincare product with active ingredients that become less potent over time).

Steve Laurant Limited Edition Tweezer Duo - Retail Value $24.00

There's not really a "wow" factor in getting tweezers in a subscription box, but they are incredibly practical. I am someone who misplaces small items (like tweezers) very easily, so I am never mad about receiving more of them. We received a slant-tipped pair and narrow pair, and while I am not really sure what makes these tweezers limited edition they have already been put to use (along with using them to pluck stray hairs I like using tweezers to apply the gel nail stickers I've been rocking on my nails since Covid began).

Suva Beauty Elysian Liquid Lipstick - Listed Value $18.00

I believe this is a discontinued product from Suva Beauty- the only lipsticks on their website are the Moisture Matte, and I'm not seeing any Glossy Lamination lipsticks available anywhere other than eBay. This is a glossy liquid lipstick, and I was surprised that it wasn't as sticky as I was expecting it to be. A glossy red has never been my thing (if I am going red, I'm going matte), but this had a nice pigmented color with a glossy shine.

Maskeraide Matcha Detoxifying Clay Mask - Retail Value $6.50

While I Love masks (I even have a crown I wear while masking when I am feeling extra flamboyant), I usually shy away from masks that claim to “detox” my skin because my skin is dry, and those masks are usually targeted towards those with oily skin. Seeing the Maskeraide product listing page promising an “intense clean feeling” left me even more hesitant- but I persevered. I do like the ingredients on this- it has matcha, niacinamide, kaolin clay, basil extract, and centella asiatica, and the mask is handy for travel because it’s packaged into individual packets. I tried this out all over my face except the apples of my cheeks (where I am most sensitive and don't get too many clogged pores), and I enjoyed the fun green color while I left it on for ten minutes to do it's thing. I followed it up with a hydrating sheet mask, and my skin was happy.

The Verdict: This was another fun box from Tribe Beauty Box. I thought the palette was really lovely, and I appreciate the mix of practical and fun items that cover skincare, body care, and beauty. TBB does a great job of featuring small brands (I had never heard of Lurella Cosmetics before), and I do feel like the value for the money was there. Speaking of value- using a combination of listed and retail values, everything in this box adds up to $139.50.

TRIBE BEAUTY BOX

Hello MSA Readers,

Thank you for your comments and concerns about “DSL”.

Unfortunately, we were not aware of any issues with this company. We are actually a very small company, founded by 1 Canadian woman, and 2 female staff (customer service and social media), so our time is entirely consumed running our business, and we missed this news.

As you can imagine, beauty box owners do not communicate much, as we are all competitors, so this wasn’t on our radar. We will look into this company and the other brands they own.

If you have any information you would like to share with us, please let us know at [email protected].

Thank you!

Re: “…while I am not really sure what makes these tweezers limited edition…”

I suspect the DLS “empire” slapped the Steve Laurant name on just enough tweezer sets to fulfill this beauty box order.

Alter Ego makes some awesome eye shadow palettes that are less money; their formulas are insane. I like them better than Natasha Denona. I bought my first AE palette 2 years ago and it’s still going strong.

What’s DLS?

Marion

Hey, MSA, if any of you actually read comments any more, this is exactly why you should address the issue in your reviews as we have been asking you to for over a year, because we being it up in the comments every. single. time. a DLS product is in a box, and yet there are STILL readers who are confused, don’t know about it, and want to know about it.

Snow

Agreed. The DLS question gets asked quite frequently and I am very grateful to those in the comments section who have shown a spotlight on this shady company and have repeatedly explained it to others not in the know.

Jackie

It’s short for “Dirty Little Secret”. The owner basically has about 10 different companies all under different names (DLS, Steve Laurent, Faccia Skin, Luna Beauty, Bang Beauty, etc.), the brand buys direct from Alibaba which is a wholesale distributor. They are private label companies that basically exist to be fillers in sub boxes. With this method they put whatever price tag they want on their products and resell them for a ridiculous upcharge. There’s a lot of posts about it on reddit, Faccia reddit should bring up more details.

With fake websites to help they’re inflated price points. These items are all made in China under inhumane working conditions and inferior sanitation practices with little oversight. Anything that cheap can only be made with horrendous labor. (And a word that MSA won’t let me post so I have to use alternative verbiage.)

With fake websites to help they’re inflated price points. These items are all made in China under inhumane working conditions and inferior sanitation practices with little oversight. Anything that cheap can only be made with close to slave labor.

Taren

Correct, I’d like to add that they often put up shell websites with inflated prices making it look like the items have incredible value. But a closer look will see that the interface of the websites are very cheaply and simply thrown up. Any reviews you see, with a closer inspection at verbiage and semantics used, and date stamped, will show you they are often just an employee doing a quick write up to make the website look legit. Sometimes the same two or three reviewer’s across the board writing them all. My biggest issue with these shell companies, is that the products are all made in China under very harsh and inhumane conditions with highly inferior ingredients or sanitation and little oversight. That’s how they are able to make pallets like this for dirt cheap.

Stephanie

And the products she buys are beyond cheap. $1.20 for a 9 pan palette or a $1.70 moisturizer that she claims is $100.

Sue

It’s a company that owns a bunch of brands

that’s what I was wondering too

The colors in tht palette are gorgeous!! And I’ve always wanted one of those Laura Gellar Baked Gelato highlighters….However, not a fan of Spongelle, don’t need any tweezers (don’t care who they’re from), and a single mask (although nice to have & has good ingredients) I have backups and just all together I don’t think it would justify $35+ shipping -for me. 🙁 Nice review, though! Thx!

Jennifer

I own waaay too many baked gelato highlighters as I got them in gift-with-purchases and a couple mystery boxes over the years – as well as the cream stick versions and oil versions. Gilded honey is a lovely one, great for a sun-kissed look without having to use a darkening bronzer. And diamond dust is *cute* – it’s got a super-pale white so you have to be more strategic in placement, but it also has a pink shimmer in it. I love it for lid highlights and ‘spot’ highlights.

They also come in dewy iluminator oils, and I actually prefer Diamond Dust in the oil. It’s great for mixing in with thicker foundations, or in with tinted moisturizers, to get a subtle all over glow.

I thought Tribe said they wouldn’t work with DLS brands any more (Steve Laurent is one)? Or was that Fashionsta? I sometimes get the 2 confused.

Rach

I thought everyone agreed to not work with this brand, yet they’re back in every box. It’s truly disappointing. The umbrella company is basically ripping us off, yet the sub boxes don’t seem to care, because profit is their concern. Ipsy agreed to not use them, but after purchasing Boxy, they are featuring these brands again. It’s not acceptable.

Reply ButtonReply

Stephanie

Yes, I’m the one who wrote about this. Ipsy is using DLS brands again. They are Basic Beauty, Saint Luxe and Glow on 5th. The face of these brands are her friend Nicole but the registration and import records show DLS is the owner.
It seems Sophia + Mabelle is too but I have no hard evidence as their domain registration is hidden by a proxy server which won’t allow anyone to see it. But the eye shadow they featured was found on Alibaba (for 35 cents) and the same manufacturer that DLS uses.

Marion

No, unfortunately, it was only a couple companies that said they wouldn’t.

AFAIK, Ipsy isn’t working directly with DLS — at least, they claim not to be. I’ve seen enough evidence to be convinced that Basic Beauty & Saint Luxe have a figurehead and that Emanuela DeFalco is heavily involved, but some of the other evidence people have found showing that newer brands we’ve seen popping up in Ipsy (Glow on 5th and Sophia + Mabelle in particular) is less than airtight convincing to me.
