Lillypost April 2021 Review

Lillypost always sends us a set of Finnley the Fox stickers along with a little note that introduces their coloring contest for the month. Kids can draw directly on the box and incorporate Finnley into the monthly theme, then share it on social media for a chance to win a prize. This month we learned some fun facts about Outer Space.

Quack: A Duck's Tale by Joe Fitzpatrick - Retail Value $12.99 (the one I linked to looks a bit different, but seems to be the same book as far as I can tell!)

While this is a board book by definition, the storyline is actually one that older children will enjoy, too which is great since my youngest is getting ready for picture book stories, but doesn't necessarily have the gentleness to read those with paper pages just yet! This cute duck meets lots of different animals and wonders why they don't quack back until he finally finds ten ducklings who are just as happy to waddle and quack as he is. The illustrations are bright and fun, there is counting to making it educational, and the text is simple and repetitive which is great for early readers!

Dragon Meets Boy by Michael Slack - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $15.82)

This book was so sweet! Dragon is Boy's best friend and does everything with him, but as Boy gets taller, he plays with Dragon less and less, until eventually Dragon is left to guard Boy's treasures in a dark box. Then one day someone decides to remove these treasures and Dragon is surprised at who he sees. This was such a sweet tale that made me just a bit sad in the middle until we got to our happy ending. I loved the simple prose of this book which really allows the actions and illustrations to guide children through the story while still leaving it somewhat open-ended. It's a great book for discussion about what is happening and why and will be great for teaching emotions and empathy because it is so relatable. I really loved this cute book and I look forward to reading it again with my children!

The Great Monster Hunt by Norbert Landa - Retail Value $15.99

In this story, Duck hears a noise under her bed that is just a bit scary. She lets her friends know and each of them sets out to help by recruiting another animal friend, but each time the animals exaggerate the noise she heard just a bit more until they have made it into such a scary sound that they determine Duck is no longer safe. These friends come to Duck's rescue only to be incredibly surprised by what they find! This story was fun and really cute with lots of adorable animals, but what I loved most was that each animal had a specific characteristic that they were known for and it was a perfect example of exaggeration that a child could understand. We had a lot of fun with this one and it was so enjoyable for my beginning reader son to read all of the wacky sound effects on each page!

Verdict: Lillypost is consistently one of our favorite book boxes each month. They just always seem to know what to send our family with 3 kids of varying ages and this month's stories were such a great mix of silly and sweet. I think there is a great balance to the books that they sent with one being simple and silly, one being simple and more emotional, and the last being fun and silly. We really did enjoy each of them! Even better, this box costs $24.90 ($19.95 + $4.95 shipping) and we received a total retail value of  $46.97, which is pretty great!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the May box, although it is possible you may get these books in a future box!

Value Breakdown: At $24.90 ($19.95 per month + $4.95 shipping) for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Quack: $6.88
  • Dragon Meets Boy: $9.54
  • The Great Monster Hunt: $8.48

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
