Universal Yums “Spain” Review

Did you know that Spain is known as the "Land of Many Rabbits?" I didn't either until opening this month's Universal Yums Spain box! That's just one of many trivia questions you'll learn after diving into one of their information-packed boxes – all while tasting your way through the country. We basically wait at our mailbox all month in anticipation for this box...was Spain a hit or a miss? Read below to find out!

Every month we receive a brightly illustrated map that usually shows where our Yums are coming from. This month, we received a map of Spain, including fun facts and trivia about Madrid, Pamplona, Zaragoza, and Seville, along with fun illustrations. On the opposing side, we have the "Yum Scoreboard," which includes a list of the box's contents and an area for you to rate each of them. We also received some info suggesting Yums from the Yum Shop based on items you may have loved from this box. We didn't get to vote on an upcoming box this month, but we did get a scavenger hunt to complete!

One of the most important aspects of this box is the detailed pamphlet they include each month. This book is filled with information about each snack, extra trivia, recipes, photos, and more to give us the full experience of Spain in the comfort of my own home. The kids and I really enjoy sitting down with our box of snacks and going through every ounce of information for an educational and fun at-home field trip!

Spicy Mango Gummies - Buy a pack of 2 for $4.00

Funny story.... at dinner this evening, I made a turkey-wild rice casserole, and my son played a trick on me by sticking a piece of rice to his arm saying he found a wood tick. Knowing I absolutely despise those creatures I glanced over at him and screamed. Laughing hysterically he removed the "wood tick" and set it on his spoon. What does this have to do with spicy mango gummies you ask? Well, in retaliation, I "accidentally" forgot to add the adjective 'spicy' when I read the description of these treats and my little jokester excitedly popped 3 of these gummy slices into his mouth. Let's just say I had the last laugh!! Deliciously sweet, these bean-shaped mango pieces have quite a bit of heat to them....and weirdly in a good way! I found the heat to complement the sweet, but my boys thought they were way too hot. Thankfully my son hadn't quite finished his milk with his dinner because he needed every last drop to cool off his spicy tongue!

Lemony Potato Chips -Buy a pack of 3 for $5.40

Being more of a lover of fruit than vegetables, I was excited to give these lemon and black pepper-flavored potato chips a try. Interestingly enough, they were quite delicious! With the perfect combination of sour and spicy, these slightly reminded me of sea salt and vinegar chips, but even more complex and tasty. The boys also liked these chips and they didn't last long.

Fried Bacon and Cheese Cones - Buy a pack of 4 for $4.00

It's been years since I've eaten a Bugle, but I definitely don't remember them being as delicious as this Spanish version. Donning the familiar cone shape, these crunchy flavor-packed morsels literally taste like bacon and cheddar in their best form. And although it is impolite to play with your food...who can resist placing these triangle-shaped chips on your fingers?! My family absolutely devoured these and more are already on order!

Spanish Chocolate Toffees - Buy a single pack for $5.10

If you know me at all, you know I have a mega addiction to chocolate, so whenever I see 'chocolate' in a title, I can't wait to dive in. These chocolate toffees were a little different than what I was expecting. They were a little deeper in flavor than I am used to. Not exactly bitter, but almost earthy in taste. The texture of the toffee starts off pretty solid and gets chewier and chewier as you eat them. The flavor of these was okay, but it wasn't something that I would go out and buy.

Pistachio Toffees - Buy a single pack for $5.10

As an adult, I have really started appreciating pistachio as a flavor, especially in the Cajun style that Walmart sells! Anyways, these toffees, while not spicy, are almost just as delicious! Chewy and nutty, I really liked these and so did both of the boys.

Pine Nut Candy - Buy a single pack for $7.90

These pine nut candies are really interesting. I have to say, I don't think I have ever seen such a tiny candy wrapped up before – they literally looked like iron ore pellets! Being hard in texture, this nutty and natural-tasting candy is one that you really need to savor. It slightly reminded me of a root beer barrel with a slight dirt flavor! While not my favorite, this little candy was tolerable, though probably not good if you have crowns on your teeth!

Sour Pineapple Gummies - Buy a pack of 2 for $4.00

After the spicy mango fiasco, my kids were a little leery to try these sour pineapple rings, but after they saw me eat a second ring, they decided it was safe and dove into the bag. I thought these sour rings were fantastic. I loved the chewiness of the gummy, the perfect pineapple flavor, paired with the sourness, and the extra sugar on top. Honestly, I feel these are some of the best gummies I have ever tasted, which is surprising because I like pineapple, but it's not my usual go-to for fruit. I 100% thought my kids would go nuts over these, and while Hank liked them he didn't go back for a second, and Charlie actually spit his out. Crazy!

White Chocolate & Caramel Candies - Buy a pack of 4 for $4.00

If you like M & M's, you are definitely going to like these white chocolate and caramel candies. These little round caramel nuggets are sweet and crunchy with the best aftertaste. The tube is also pretty darn adorable...just a little small for a group of three tasters!

Custard Cream Coradillo - Buy a pack of 6 for $4.20

Pre-packaged cakes are a hard sell for me. I have tried many versions and haven't been fond of many. This custard cream cortadillo actually passed our test. The cake was really moist and sweet, and we loved the custard cream. It was lovely, light, sweet, and delicious. The light glaze on the top was the perfect finishing touch. Plus it looked pretty sitting on the plate!

Dark Chocolate Bar with Orange Peels - Buy a pack of 3 for $4.20

My Grandma Carol loved orange-flavored chocolate, and each year at Christmas would share one of those chocolate oranges with the grandkids. She has been gone over 4 years now, and I haven't had a chocolate orange since, so this dark chocolate bar with orange peel flooded my taste buds with nostalgia! Slightly bitter yet sweet and tart this chocolate was mature and sophisticated in flavor and looks.

Fried Egg & Sea Salt Potato Chips - Buy a pack of 3 for $4.50

I like eggs, but not so much that I want to eat potato chips that are flavored like it. Upon opening the bag we were greeted with a heavy egg smell and found the crunchy chips to have a legit egg flavor. Definitely not my cup of tea, but Charlie thought they were okay. Hank decided he didn't care for them, so we lovingly put them in dad's lunch pail!

Cocoa Dusted Salted Caramel Truffles - Buy a pack of 2 for $7.00

Through this box, we have had the opportunity to experience our fair share of truffles. Usually, I find them all too rich and the cocoa powder too bitter, but this salted caramel version was one I kind of enjoyed. Sweeter than previous flavors, the only bitter part of this truffle was the outside, but we found it to balance out the creamy inside. I don't think this type of dessert will ever be one of my favorites, but I have to admit, this truffle box is feeling a lot lighter right now than it did this morning....whoops!

The Verdict: The Spain Universal Yums box was a win for our family this month! Unlike last month, this month had more hits than misses for us, and we found the curation to be diverse and fun. Between the fun information and the tasty treats, each month is like a field trip that we don't need to leave our home for. Spain can keep their Fried egg potato chips, but I do have an order in for more of the pineapple gummies and fried bacon and cheese cones! I love discovering new treats, and learning about new places is just plain fun! Does anyone have any guesses where we might be headed next month?

Scorecard Picks:

  • Best Yum: Sour Pineapple Gummies
  • Runner-up: Fried Bacon & Cheese Cones
  • Worst Yum: Fried Egg & Sea Salt Potato Chips
  • Most Unusual: Pine Nut Candy

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Each month they ship your box no later than the 15th day of the month. The first month you will receive a box varies based on availability and may depend on your order's size.

Value Breakdown: This box is $27.00 per month (including shipping). I received 21 individually wrapped snacks which average out to $0.87 per item.

The spicy mangoes were delicious. Everything else sucked.

I really loved getting this box.. But they kept sending me very old candy & chocolates. Where the chocolate gets that old faded color after time 😖 where you honestly don’t want to eat it.

Anyways I was paying for the Super Yums box and decided to take a break. Budget wise, dieting.. And A Lot of old treats 😣😢

Thanks for commenting Diamond. That is a really big bummer that your chocolate has been faded! Did you reach out to customer service at all?
