Sensory TheraPlay Box March 2021 Review

Each box comes with a one-page insert with photos of the items on the front and a brief description with their values on the back. It also includes contact information along with a disclaimer about how it is the responsibility of the adult to determine whether the items included are appropriate for the child. As someone with a Special Education background, I love that they include this since every child is unique and responds to various stimuli in different ways! There are some items that may not be appropriate for every child depending on those needs.

They always include a little motivational card for us.

Usborne Fingertip Activities: Animals by Fiona Watt - Retail Value $15.99

I have seen these books before but was always hesitant to purchase them because it looked like they could get messy. Now that we have gotten the chance to try one out, it seems like it is relatively easy to clean up! The paint wipes off little fingers easily, and it seems to dry fairly quickly unless they happen to push a bit harder resulting in some excess paint. I love the creativity of each of these pages and I appreciate that they provide some guidance and direction, but still allow for kids to really add their own personal touch...quite literally!

The boys (almost 3 and almost 5) both loved this activity! My soon-to-be 3 year old is the one who keeps asking to do it again, but he's also the one who doesn't remember to wipe his fingers off in between colors, so I've been hesitant to let him use it unless I can closely supervise him because I don't want him to ruin it before everyone gets a real chance with it! Other than that, I would feel comfortable letting him work on this book independently, and since he seems to enjoy it so much, it might just end up being his book, anyway!

Putty Scents Cloud Putty by Mindware in Strawberry - Retail Value $6.95

I offered this to my daughter and told her it was cotton candy and she believed me until she got a whiff of it! It really does look like a bag of fluffy cotton candy (maybe not the fresh kind), but the strawberry smell is definitely of the fake variety, although not unpleasant, just not very subtle. This is really fun to play with and if you stretch it gently it almost seems to melt the way cotton candy does and becomes even softer in your hands. It's malleable and holds its shape pretty well and it was a hit with the kids.

Here you can see the way it stretches!

Hyper Flex Stretchy Mice and Cheese by Play Visions - Retail Value $8.99

We received this same rubbery block of holey cheese a few years ago and it was actually a much bigger hit this time around now that my kids are a bit older. The little mice, while gross, are also kind of cute and you can hide them inside the cube of cheese which is a great way to work those fine motor skills and as you work to get them in and then to take them out again. It's also just a fun novelty toy that kids will enjoy!

Dinosaur Squishimal by Toysmith - Retail Value $5.49

We have received plenty of Squishimals before, but this is our first dino and he's so cool! He is just a bit stretchy with a rubbery body and he is filled with these tiny beads that crunch and move around when you squish him. It's a great little fidget and also a form of a stress ball that will help strengthen hand muscles, too. My sons both took a liking to this immediately and have been using him as a regular toy for now.

Rainbow Modeling Clay by Toysmith - Retail Value $5.99

Rainbow clay! What a nice vibrant pack with 24 different colors. We haven't actually opened this yet, but I can't wait to break it out on a rainy day! The day it arrived it was super cold outside, so I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet to see how malleable it is but the reviews seem decent. If it's like modeling clays I've used in the past, it will be another great fine motor activity to work the hand muscles since it is firmer than Play-doh and putty. It looks like this doesn't actually dry, so we might even get a few uses out of it!

Tactile Pencil Gripper by Spike - Listed Value $3.75

This tactile pencil gripper has nice little silicone spikes all around it and it slides right onto a standard-sized pencil. It is made with 100% food-grade silicone that is hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and free from BPA, phthalates, and latex. Not only is it a great silent fidget, but it can also help improve your child's grip on their pencil.

Verdict: I love the variety of toys that Sensory TheraPlay box sends every month. The biggest hits for us this month would have to be the fingerprint book, the cloud putty, and the mice and cheese. Luckily my children each gravitated towards a different toy, which was nice! I thought there were a lot of toys to focus on fine motor skills and hand strength but in a variety of textures like the softer cloud putty versus the firmer modeling clay. They always have so many fun, unique toys and I appreciate the curation and delivery right to our door. As for the retail value, I came up with a total of $47.16, which is just under the $49.24 ($40.95 + $8.29 shipping) cost of this box. If I went by the listed values, we would be just over the cost, but there are always some discrepancies, most likely because these items are available from such a range of companies whereas I am always comparing to the best price I can locate which explains the difference. Either way, I am okay with a little less return on the value because this box consistently delivers delight to our doorstep each month!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but order by March 31 at 11:59 pm EST to receive the April box. From Sensory TheraPlay:

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
